To clarify: I never said I thought it was a good idea fro a child to have an automatic weapon in their hands. Don't even get me started on what I think of video games on a gazillion levels. I never thought you did.... :) Roger--didn't want people reading half the thread to think otherwise. Agree with FD--I didn't even know such a place existed--and I certainly doubt this kind of gratuitous enthusiasm represents a large portion of the population where they would say "Hey, we are 'pro-gun; sure honey, why the bleep not?" But rare incidents like these are often extrapolated and used as anti-gun propaganda when it represents a portion of the population that I never knew existed until I read the story. The problem is this venue, the set up, and the types of weapons which are allowed. No inexperienced individual, especially not a lightweight child, belongs handling an uzi for target practice, especially an inexperienced user at that. What good comes of it? So sad.

Hinayasin, look on gulftalent.com. Your salary requirements are actually spot on for no UAE work experience. MBA or not, it doesn't matter-- it matters more your communication ability or UAE/Gulf work experience. Although I agree with Londiamond that your level of education commands a higher salary desire, this is the reality considering your situation.

Hi hinayasin, I advise that you submit your CV to various local recruiting agencies. They are the best judges of where your skillset will apply. Even though you may have an esteemed degree in one arena, simply having 2+ years experience in another area where the UAE has great need could be enough to land you a career. So it is not outlandish for you to consider a career in education if you have experience. I like gulftalent.com and often, the listed jobs will reference the recruitment agency, and you can them contact directly. As for the comment about writing in English, ending sentences in a preposition is generally frowned upon, so pay no mind. I speak only one other language fluently which has done me little good in the UAE. I applaud anyone who speaks English as a second language as it is highly difficult. Good luck in your search! Education is the key to the next generation and I wish you well in this field. edited by Beebers on 25/08/2014

Practically speaking, I agree with the other posters that Dubai can prove to be a city where you may have great difficulty landing a job, having no UAE work experience. Specialized or not, bachelor's/master's/no degree--it is very competitive here. It is typical for employers to pay way less than you are worth, so to speak, without the UAE or Gulf region experience under your belt. Yes nationality will be a major factor in determining your pay. It may not be well advertised outside of the UAE, but you certainly find that out when you get in the workforce here.

Sorry to hijack--if you are employed and working on your husband's visa with a NOC, how does the company pay you? I have a friend who is in this situation, been paid cash her first two months, and now her employer has told her to "go open a salary account." I thought that was done by the company when you are on their visa?

TB, hilarious thread title :) When I had a roommate who had a maid, c) ! [b'>I could tell some stories[/b'> about people I cleaned house for as a young lady. LOL People that would hide--that was like a breath of fresh air!!!!! Please do.... Ok quick one, then you guys are on your own. I cleaned for a family. A couple with 2 little kids. When the Mrs was there, she was always so happy to see me....because, her little girls would follow me around. Hang on my leg, ask me lots of questions. "How old are you Beebers? Where do you live, Beebers? Can you be the Ken doll and play, Beebers????????" And the mother would literally disappear! These girls were adorable, but they would jack around with my chemicals, mess up my mopping, etc. I was her babysitter! She would re-emerge with an "Oh I just ran outside to water the plants...ran into the neighbor who wouldn't let me go, so sorry!!!" Yeah BS...4 hours? It was an 8,000 sq ft house. Anyway....when the Mr. was home? He was always very friendly, and would talk to me when I was in the common areas. kitchen, living, etc. "How's it going? You're working too hard. Want a Bud? I was just going to have one myself. Have a seat. Do you smoke? You can smoke in here, I do." Nevermind it's 10 am on a Wednesday! What happened next? You guys finish the story LOL

*thinking wistfully of old threads* Which threads would you all like to read again? I would like to read the whole living in a car on the beach/fake saga as I missed it all. Also wasn't there one where the lady's maid went into labour in the kitchen and there were updates all the way through? Not sure if it was real. edited by Tattie Bogle on 20/08/2014 ^^totally missed those, never heard of either?? Most recently, I remember the meat-stomping maid. And, though it wasn't controversial, the poor gal who woke up to stolen banana trees--that thread was full of hilarious puns. Had me in stitches.

I lived in Park Island in 2010-11, and actually, there were quite a few residents with dogs. There *was* really easy access to the walk from that building. I ran the marina walk many times and would often pass people walking their dogs. Never once did I have to dodge any jewels left behind by irresponsible owners. It is nice to see animal life. For crying out loud, I light up when birds land on my balcony, just to see some life! If Lennox is paying 250K, I assume that means 2/3 bed, or villa. I am sure they considered the living space with their dogs' well-being in mind when they chose a place. If they had border collies or something, then yes, a villa would be more appropriate. ETA it is ridiculous in the marina right now, totally not pedestrian friendly and dangerous. Changes daily. I walked from Princess Tower to Silverene a few weeks back and it took me over an hour with the diversions. I tell myself it will be worth it when the tram is done, but for now--I just shake my head at some of the detours and "stunts" like painting a white line on the street at 7:30 am this morning, in the turnout from my building. great timing! edited by Beebers on 20/08/2014

On Shellac--I removed it myself with regular acetone Boots nail polish remover and some foil. Just as they do in the shop, soak a piece of cotton that will cover your fingernail fully, wrap in foil, and wait about 10 mins. Slough it off with a metal cuticle pusher...or if you are like me...use a Swiss army knife attachment. It may require a gentle buff with the #2 side of a spongy 4-sided nail buffer. I did what I had to do; early meeting cropped up for the next day, and shops were closed for the night. I am not sure if it is the same everywhere, but I don't get charged for Shellac removal when I go to the same shop that put it on.

There is a company in JBR that set up freezone companies, for the life of me I cannot think of their name, but they are by The Nicolas and Asp surgery.....A friend set her company up, cant remember the exact costs but it was in the region of 30,000 I think. Virtuzone. cost is about right, and this seems to be the norm. I suggest also looking into RAK free zone. Same pricing but from what I understand they are quite speedy, within 2 weeks you can be licensed. I was really happy with their agents, too, helpful and quick to respond. They have an office on SZR at the Fairmont, no need to go to RAK. Here is a breakdown if you do not require a physical office. Those are not always available. Registration Fees 7,000 (One time fee) Consultancy License 7500 annually Flexi Desk (Shared desk) 12,500 annually Admin Service Charges 1,200 annually Gross Total 28,200 upfront; however, they were offering a discount a couple of months back, 4800 dirhams off. the license will run you 21, 200 each year for renewal and maintenance. + visa if you need it, that's an additional 6870 for three years. Also, note that your (attested) degree must be in the specific field that you are setting up a consultancy for--or related field that qualifies.

I like this forum as it is and see it for what it is. It has proved tremendously helpful for me and simply entertaining at other times. Plenty of comments on here are condescending, rude, self-aggrandizing, but [b'>many[/b'> are also supportive, downright sweet, and helpful. Just don't take it so seriously. Also, when/if others disagree or challenge something you've said, this can be stimulating and enlightening! I'll admit though...I do find the occasional EW inquisition funny when someone asks a pretty straightforward question and gets just [i'>roasted.[/i'> You can't just ask for something on here sometimes without getting your intelligence contested, your morals questioned, your lack of UAE research (prior to moving here) criticized, your spelling corrected, and a host of other things.

I agree with RH77 and Shaks. love Cairo. I went in 2010 and 2012. I haven't been since, but my husband works there and is there now. But because of the plunge in tourism, going to the Khan market in Cairo, or the Pyramids at Giza--you will be bombarded. As far as danger from "clashes," there is the isolated incident like this http://indianexpress.com/article/world/middle-east-africa/4-killed-17-injured-in-clashes-in-egypt/ DH was told to stay home and not go out that night. Many of the locals know ahead of time when these things are going down and they are rare. A few expats we know are getting out, but that has more to do with their offsite work toward the western desert than not liking the scene in Cairo or feeling like its dangerous. That said, DH spent a weekend in Alex during Ramadan for a company weekend and loved it. Night and day to Cairo. Much different scene. There has been some incidents of tourists getting sick from poor food handling practices at these resorts, though, so something to bear in mind. Would I go? Yes, to any of the places you mentioned. I'll be commuting back and forth and can't wait :) I think I still would if I had LO's--but I hesitate to recommend that for anyone else. Personal decision! What are your other ideas, any?

Yes, I had that last year, a red ring of irritated skin where my wedding band would be. Do you remove your ring when you wash your hands, then wait a good while to put it back on? Can be a pain but it helped me. This year, I got rashes around my wrists from my workout gloves. Horribly uncomfortable-- not to mention dubious looking. I had been prescribed Dermovate cream for disc-like patches of eczema on my legs, and tried it on the patches on my wrists. I applied it 2x a day and it knocked it out. I would highly recommend this. It is inexpensive and available at almost all pharmacies, no scrip needed. There are two versions; I prefer the cream to the ointment because it's a lot less greasy.

Okay...I guess I will give my feedback next week. I got my wires crossed somewhere; this particular doctor only does insertions when one is menstruating, when the flow start to stop. I called so many clinics, and asked a ton of questions. Some clinics told me they simply do a blood test to make sure you are not pregnant. This was apparently not the one :) What was really nice is that the doctor said she would not charge the 500 consultation fee, and we'll just do it next time. Don't know if that's common or not, but I really appreciated it, being a cash patient. Businessbay,I took half of your advice. I took a Voltaren 75 but not the Augmentin...guess that was for the best in hindsight! Something else. I was of course asked if I have children. No. "When do you plan to start?" ...."We don't." The doctor looked at me like I was either crazy or kidding myself. I said "What?I am only 36 for crying out loud!" Still looking at me like I am nuts. Question: Is this truly highly unusual, to not have plans for children? Or is it nutty to be unconcerned either way at 36???

Hey, thanks for sharing, businessbay. I also used the nuva ring for a few months. I stopped because I couldn't get it where I was living, and also, I smoke in fits and spurts and am over 35. Although my blood pressure is almost disturbing low, my sister had a blood clot, so I avoid anything with estrogen. This may also be TMI; the ring can pop out, frequently! I go in tomorrow for a consultation and *hopefully* a fitting. A fitting...now doesn't that sound nice? Like going to the tailor or something. I'm prepared it may downright suck, so I've made sure I've nothing to do but relax for the afternoon and evening. I am not sure if I will end up going with Mirena or the Copper coil, but I'll report my experience back here.

I cannot find his business card with the company name, but last year, I went with another poster's recommendation on this forum for Mr Ganesh, 0507944033. If I recall, I phoned him mid week, his people came that Saturday to show us books full of fabrics and measure windows, and by the next Tues or Wed, they were installing them. They even hung pictures for us because we have no power tools. We opted for the pull-down blackouts, so they don't disrupt the views when they are opened. They did such a good job that not a peep of the sun comes in when they are down, which is impressive when you have a wall of separate panels! I was so pleased and especially nice that the quality is great and didn't cost the moon. After all, we are renting. Good luck

Maybe another poster could guide you, I have seen her recommended highly here. Also, Dr. Hauschka is available at the Organics Store in Greens, possibly other locations. It's "natural" but I don't know if it meets Vegan, Organic, or Halal standards. I had horribly sensitive facial skin years ago, and this skin care line was all I could stand to use. The cosmetics are fab also, my favorite lip gloss :) Hope this helps

I think that was the way a lot of doctors used to think, around 20+ years ago. If you hadn't had a baby your body couldn't accept a coil !!! I know mine did ;) Well, to be fair--the FDA approved Mirena based on studies that were all inclusive of women who have had children--Bayer recommends it as such because of that. So it is confusing. Bayer even makes a smaller IUD now to market to women without kids. I don't think they have it here. But yeah--lol--I have had some gynes in the past that had very interesting "cautions" for me, based on zero medical evidence.

I don't have any children, but a few years ago, my gyne told me I was a good candidate for an IUD. I have used nuvo ring, combo pills, Depo Provera injection, Ortho Evra patch. I had side effects from a few, and a few I am no longer a candidate for. Guess I will see which the doctor suggests based on the barrage of different hormones I have used, what the effects were, and so on. I'll report back on my experience in case it may help someone else in the future. Thanks again, ladies! EW'ers rock!

Did you check into mirena? Yes, I have. Foremost I am interested in the IUD. I am leaning toward the copper because it is non hormonal. The one thing I have read over and over again is that the copper IUD makes bleeding heavier whereas the Mirena seems to make bleeding lighter, if not, disappear totally. One single injection of Depo Provera messed me up for a long time but I realize the active ingredient is different in Mirena. So I am a little scared of hormonal birth control. Have you used Mirena, Cherpie?

Hi Smartee, I went to Nikki Salon in Discovery Gardens. To clarify this is for a Brazilian keratin straightening treatment...Brazilian blow out is a different brand of product--but almost sure we mean the same thing. Nikki offers True Keratin (organic and gentler) and Brazilian Cacau. They suggested the latter for me. I think both are the same price. To give you an idea, I have wavy hair that is kinky is some places but not tight curls all over. The treatment left my hair pin straight, which relaxed after a week, to a much nicer version of my own waves. I didn't start.getting a hint of frizz until 10 weeks post treatment. I bought the Tru Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner to maintain it, and let me say, that stuff is amazing! I don't think I will ever buy Kerastase again, even if I discontinue these treatments. Hope this helps

I suggest calling the salon and just asking which products they use. Where I get my hair cut, they charge 2000 dhs and up, so I checked for groupon deals. I called different salons, and they told me which kind of product they use. After researching the products, I booked a treatment and am very, very pleased with the results. The gals were skilled and super friendly. (not always the case!) The groupon voucher + "long hair" charge came to 350 dhs. Next time I go back, they said it will only be 800 dhs. So the price does not exactly mean the product is garbage. It may have more to do with the salon overhead. (Salaries, rent, etc).

May I humbly suggest? Don't fret too much! You will likely find everything you need here. I am a mild addict of all things cosmetic and beauty related, but I have managed without spending much time on ebay or the like. I don't know where you are moving from, but Shop and Ship (Aramex service) has sufficed to fill in the gaps of what cannot be found here. (Even though their service stinks at times). Have you considered, as another mentioned, photos? This is the sole regret I have, not taking photos of loved ones with me. I moved with 2 suitcases 4 years ago, and between shoes/clothes/important documents, there wasn't room for much else. I told myself, "I'll go back to our storage unit soon!" however work and life here gets in the way, and I haven't seen that locker since I left! Good luck with your move
