My answer to this question would have been completely different 6 months after i'd got here and will have changed as every year went by ... honestly, after 4 plus years here my answer is nothing apart from my family !! Exact same sentiments after being here 4 years, myself! Now if my family would happen to bring some really good eye drops here when they stop over, like Rohto, (they are mentholated and fabulous) that would be a bonus :)

Thanks for the name of the fish delivery company, going to try them this week. I was just thinking I wish there was an alternative to going out 3x a week or more just for fresh fish. woo hoo! Wow Beebers you have been missing for a long time.. Welcome back:) I know I am totally off topic but hey just wanted to say welcome back... Hi Marroosh :) Cheers, nice to see you are still around! RE the thread, I ordered online from arabind this morning at 6, fish arrived at noon fresh and nicely packed. Sweet! P.S. I vote cream dorys. Got hooked on them 2 yrs ago here and still alive and kicking :)

I second dolleymadison's suggestion, I would contact Symmetry Gym and book a consultation. The programs are individually created specifically for you by Amir, the founder, and he is a genius with program design.

I signed on here to find out about the Christmas warehouse, and here I go reading threads nothing to do with me and deciding to comment :) I am not Muslim, but am a lady with tattoos. Objectively speaking, they don't always last well and a lot of artists recommend against it. A larger, solid one could fade unevenly, especially if you spend a lot of time dusting around on the beach. Found that out the hard way, myself. If it is on the top of your foot, toward the ankle, it will last better. Black also becomes navy pretty quickly on this thin skin, so you may want to consider red or purple if you are not okay with that. Other thoughts: Some people will judge you just for having a tattoo irrespective of what it says or where it is. That's their problem, not yours. (a while back on EW, a poster said she would not be seen with someone who had tattoos!) Most people don't want to bring unnecessary hardship on themselves, of course, so your conscientious attitude is understandable. I got a couple of wrist tattoos before they were popular, but I was at the point of my life where I knew it would not affect any aspirations. If it makes you happy, do it, and get it done exactly as you want. You're the one wearing it.

Aha, just signed on to ask about this...sorry if I sound dense, but is this a seasonal joint that sells only Christmas decor? Not expecting Neiman's quality...but is it kind of junky? I loved Artikel @ MOE for decor, even though they were pricey on some things.

Hilsbils: is your friend still available? I've got a recommendation for the guy doing my website and other projects I'm consulting on; he's brilliant. contact [email protected]

Add me to the list of ladies holding a grudge against you, Ginnee! heehee :) This was really good! I did everything I could to mess it up, too. Mixed cooking cream with water to make up for only having a little camel milk, and the pot boiled over when I got ADD. However. Awesome! I've never eaten a dessert cooked with rose water, so I used 1/4 cup. I liked it--especially because it made it so decadent, that I didn't want seconds :) What's funny, is when I went to the store to buy the ingredients, I checked out behind a lady who was also only buying the same ingredients. lol Popular stuff. Thanks!

Unbelievable. Not sure how well this would go down in Dubai, but here's a novel concept. Kick the living daylights out of the little b******. That would definitely make him think twice. I don't care if I get blasted for saying so, that's my policy. A delivery guy brushed my chest with his free hand when he was handing the take away boxes to me a couple of years ago here. (I answered the door in a baggy t shirt and sweats, so what prompted this molestation, I've no idea). He actually smiled when he did it, too. I set the boxes on the ground, kicked him in the shins and told him if he didn't do his best to run, my husband would finish the job. Maybe next time he will think not of Western women as easy, but as women that will beat the living **** out of them if you try and assault them.

Barbara, I had an Omega (in storage back home) and I believe after owning several that it is the first and last word in juicing, especially for masticating. I see them at Organic Foods in the Greens, and they seem to be stocking more of them. I can't remember the RPMs or wattage on these models. The price range is 2100-3000 and I believe you can purchase them at 20% on the monthly 2 day sale Organics has. @Sandy, besides juicing wheatgrass, I made lovely almond and cashew butters with these. There is also a pasta attachment but never used it. These squeeze out a ton of pulp, which can be used in baking :)

There are lots of plant nurseries by Academic City Road which is often referred to as as the plant souk, There is also a vary large plant nursery just past Dragon Mart. You take the first right past the Dragonmart / International City entrance. It's a small road so keep a close eye out. Follow it round, it curves to the left at some point, there is a gate to turn left in to the nursery. There is an office by the gate, they will wave you on or tell you exactly where to go. It's all very rustic, green and countryside like. The plants are at the end of a bumpy track. I love going there. Hi Daza, sounds like a nice place. Do you prefer the stock there better to the collection of plant nurseries? I'm going with a friend this week and it's a case of the blind leading the blind.

Can anyone recommend for an adult. Using dermalogica which should be fine but having breakouts and not sure if it's the cream. I use [b'>La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Cream SPF50[/b'>. Dermalogica contains very active ingredients maybe that's why your skin reacts! I second this product. Been using it for a month now, and I do not break out in bumps as I have with every other sunscreen on the planet. More importantly, I do not get freckling on my face, even when I am running outside, sweating, in partial to direct sunlight. Can't say enough good things. Oh wait, yes I can. I have the tinted one, so as a bonus I don't look like a zombie :)

Ruth, I remember reading about your experience a while back on here, and it's awful. The degree of knowledge and capability varies so wildly with trainers here--anyone can take a test and get certified yet have no real world experience or athletic history. Any moron can count reps, prescribe star jumps and burpees regardless of a client's goals or fitness level, and throw them on a stability ball. That's the majority of what I see going on at the gym: generic and often useless exercises that have potential to be dangerous. This is not every single trainer, but many.

Hi laydeelay :) I used to post on a lot of threads on EW regarding fitness and fat loss, and thought I'd chime in. The 80/20 thing with diet and exercise is both right and wrong. There is no magic equation; everyone is different. I believe that the exercise and energy expenditure determine what the body does with the food. Does that make sense? In other words, I think it is a sound decision to find a workout regimen that you can commit to doing consistently, first. Whether it be a DVD, a morning run, a circuit class, or what-have-you. Then you need to feed the body so it is a well functioning machine and give it what it needs. I do like myfintesspal, as other have mentioned, because it is user friendly and an excellent tool. Fat loss comes from burning more calories than you take in, simple. Truth is, though, if your diet (and by diet, I simply mean what you eat) is a barrage of junk, a few simple tweaks will make all the difference without doing any magic or jumping trough hoops. If you eat rather healthily, and are somewhat active (working full time with a small child, you are obviously active!) and still struggle with a lot of extra fat, then you may want to hire a professional. It just depends on what you are eating now, and what you are doing physically at the mo. Thyroid and hormones can play a part, but sadly not as much as most people would like to think. I have a friend with NO thyroid. Had it removed due to cancer. He lost fat when he quit eating donuts 3x a week and started working out. Even medicine cannot help you outrun your fork x

Hi SWK, Not sure what you consider ridiculous fees--I have heard everything from 175 dhs a session up to 300. The saying is true, if you think it is expensive to hire a professional, try hiring an amateur--and it's possible you could pay a much larger price by having an experience like Ruth's. :( The quality here really is 50/50--but I don't know that it is really any different anywhere else in the world--the industry is becoming saturated; wellness is a huge movement. Anyone can pay to take a course, take a test, but unless they also have real world experience either training themselves or others, there is no guarantee they know how to design a program specific for an individual and get results. Which area of JVC do you live in? I may be able to help with your request for morning slots :)

i have used flymovers - they were 45 min late and took in all 10 hours to pack and unpack..that too they managed to unpack only 4 boxes with my maid's assistant ..i will never use them again and am still fuming !!!! edited by divalicious7 on 06/05/2013 We ended up dismissing them. They really ran out of steam and I worried they would be in my home until midnight at the rate they were going, and we had dinner to get to. The owner seems really nice, professional, and was excellent with turnaround time for my inquiry and booking, but I don't think his current staff is up to his personal service level. Plus, drawing on my furniture with a permanent marker and my expensive kitchen shears disappearing really p'd me off. Especially because my DH saw them using them to cut some tape ?! I don't doubt some people have had great experiences with them...but the cr@p shoot in reviews is worrying.

**taking notes on how to make chicken stock** Seriously, I wouldn't touch a Maggi product with a 10 foot pole. MSG is some nasty stuff, and it is in a lot of Knorr products, too. That stuff makes me SO sick. It's right up there with aspartame for me on the "avoid like the plague" list.

Beebers - I'm curious how your move with Fly Movers went? Did they do a good job? Did they break anything? Hi, I'll try and summarize my issues with them. They were 30-40 minutes late, but this was also when the new roundabouts went up in the marina. I don't think they expected the traffic, because they called me to confirm 30 mins before the appointment, and called again when they were going to be late. They packed the stuff well, we had nothing break. I wasn't really happy with having to send dress shirts out to be re-pressed or dry cleaned again. Why they would stuff my dress shirts at the bottom of a box with sweaters and handbags on top--I'll never know. I had given basic directions with our bedroom things but certain logic escaped. I didn't let them unpack my kitchen items because I wanted to wash things, and organize everything myself. When I saw the way they packed my kitchen stuff, I was a little irked--a wonder some things were not broken. My poultry shears disappeared in the move :( My husband saw them using them to cut a box or something and we never saw them again. More than any of the little things, which escape me at the moment, I was ultra ticked about a desk. Ok, it is from IKEA and was inexpensive. But. Not only did 2 guys mess with it for what I think was an hour and a half trying to reassemble it, they had actually marked where the shelves were inserted with permanent marker, I *guess* so they would know where to put the shelves back. It is totally obvious, and I can't believe the I didn't notice until a week after the move. (I had told them to just give up on the darned thing and I would put it together myself, later). Other than that, I guess you could say things were fine. If you ever plan to use them, make sure to tell them which clothes you don't want stuffed in a box. 800 dhs shirts that are hanging will be treated the same way as 10 year old socks. Tell them not to draw with permanent marker on anything which will be reassembled. And not to bogart your expensive poultry shears to be used as scissors and then ganked or tossed :(

Nope I shall not be swayed.. jeans and jacket all the way!!! For women too! High heels, sleeves pushed up, chunky brooches... ala Janet Jackson & the girls from Five Star. Someone give me a time-machine NOW... I'm with you. The ladies who feel otherwise would probably clutch their pearls if they went to a steakhouse in Texas, dropped 3000 dhs on a bill, and had to stare at "that" lol!!! I met George Strait at a wedding and he was wearing just that. Done right, it's all class to me! (I, too, do the high heels and jeans thing. too hot here for cowboy boots. It's just me. It's fun to see the girls roll in after brunch, though, all dressed to the nines in a poofy number and stumbling in what looks like their mother's heels they borrowed). edited by Beebers on 30/04/2013

La Roche Posay is good, we use their children's SPF 50 one. A plus is that it is available in many pharmacies in Dubai. edited by Sugarbeach on 25/04/2013 Agree, I recently bought some on the 2 for 1 deal and..amazed. I break out from literally ever other one I have tried and still do not get adequate protection no matter what the number on the bottle says. Hi Nadiya, You said you cannot afford a trainer, but the good news is there is a ton of FREE information on the internet. Not that you can't get good advice here, but professional advice and tips are what you should seek. The writers from Bodybuilding.com have a lot of good info on site--and no, it is not for bodybuilders only. leanbodiesconsulting.com also has some great blogs and posts. It will take some effort on your part, doing the research, but knowledge is power--and you have quoted some of the biggest misconceptions and myths about fat loss, "toning," and bulking. So when you are starting your journey based on false assumptions that's not a good start. May I suggest a couple of blogs? Here is one: http://www.symmetrygymdubai.com/blog/ for excellent reading. They bust a lot of myths. Another brilliant site is gokaleo.com. Lots of different tidbits on there about a sound approach to adapting to a healthier and stronger lifestyle. (Assuming you want a lifestyle change, and not just to reach a certain goal only to sit on your laurels and go back to square one). Heavy weights do not "bulk" you. Lifting weights does not "bulk" you. True if you want to build muscle you need to have tension and resistance. That is the language muscle speaks. But if you avoid that and only do cardio, (i.e. steady state like walking on a treadmill) your concerns of flab will not go away. You will just be a smaller version of yourself, possibly with more flab and even metabolic issues to boot. (**note-I am not saying overweight people with belly fat concerns that affect their health don't benefit at all from this, but according to your OP this is not the case with you). Fat can not be turned into muscle any more than an apple can be turned into an orange. I am not saying you are fat...I am speaking of the fat which we all have, and if you don't want it, or like the way it looks on you, it needs to be lost, not "toned." No such thing as "toning," but you can lose fat and achieve a toned look. Using resistance bands is a good start until you are strong enough to lift actual weights. (As you get stronger you need to push yourself more to continue to have results). Do your research, but get moving in the meantime as you learn. The sooner you get started with something, the better. So many people get caught up in the "information gathering" stage, and try to find the best, quickest, most proven way to reach their goals yet do nothing. It takes a while to figure it out, and there is no telling how long it will be until you reach your goals. It all depends on your dedication and habits, and however long your body takes to respond. Good luck!

I don't know if you want this for sport, but if you want to block a lot of sun out without getting "hat head," they had some great ones at Beyond the Beach in Marina Mall. Actually, they are more a sun hat that wraps the head and leaves the crown exposed. I liked the idea and the look of it, but my DH bought me a big ol sun hat before I had the chance to buy it.

The *free* apps I use most are myfitnesspal, the weatherchannel app, flipboard, travel magazine (this one is brilliant!), MedWhat, and Sudoku :) I've downloaded a few apps that teach how to say hello and basics in French and Italian, those are fun. Oh, and Coin Dozer was a great, great mindless game to pass time in queues and things like that. "The Room" was another game I really liked, a puzzle game. Its probably just dust - it's been really really dusty for the last few weeks and this can set of hayfever like symptoms in some people. I would agree with this. Taffy, there are a lot of threads here about the correlation between hair fall here, and the water. I manage my hair fall with rinsing with Masafi, using hair masks rather than conditioners (I don't wash it daily) and keeping it as tangle free as possible. I still don't know if it's the water, or rather the arid climate. Washing with a shampoo that contains harsh sulfates + arid climate seems to be a recipe for disaster, so try to find a gentle shampoo and try rinsing with mineral water--it's cheap and easy to do. Some people also swear by a certain water filter, there are threads on that here, too if you do a search. hope that helps.

Hello, thought I would come back to this thread after calling Mr. Ganesh on Tues (or was it Wed?) They were able to come this morning for measurements and brought fabric books. They were very pleasant and right on time. We went with the "pull up" style blackouts, 7 panels for 2 rooms. Bongo is right, the price was not the earth. They are installing them on Wednesday and also said they are happy to hang 3 pictures for us as well. I can't wait; it feels like the man upstairs is shining a spotlight on us midday--it's getting unbearable! Thanks for the recommendation, I hope they turn out well!

Hi If you are going to rely on public transport, I would say the edge the marina has over JLT is the ease of getting a taxi. One of my good friends lives there and it is her only beef--difficult to get a taxi. Yes, there is congestion, but if you choose a building carefully based on the traffic and construction, it's no big deal. I live in the marina, and that is one thing we looked at, as we didn't have a car the first 2 years. *ease of taxi pickup outside our building, *JBR is within walking distance (tons of shops and restaurants, hotels), metro station walkable most months of the year. There are also a ton of bus stops, but the pick up and drop off points now can be a little dodge with the construction. hope this helps.

I agree it is ridiculous the sheer amount of texts, reminders, all way before the actual bill is due. What kills me is that it is inconsistent. well, yes, if you're going to start talking about utilities - we pay less here, no road tax and I paid 300 dhs to fill my car when I went back - and it's only a tiny thing.... Right, a little off track. What I meant is it balances some of the grocery items. And buying organic in the USA was a load more expensive. At least when I left in 2010.

Honestly, I still have wide eyes every time I fill up my gas tank here and it makes everything else I pay more for here to be less annoying. The Mazaraa (sp?) organic produce offerings at Waitrose seem quite cheap to me, as well as Ripe's prices. I guess if you don't drive a lot, the cheapness of petrol is not exciting. (I was actually surprised at the cost of petrol here vs. Saudi, Kuwait, and other oil exporting nations. UAE seems to be on the high end in the GCC). I also find DEWA and du quite cheap as well. But then again...our chiller is included.

I don't think I have a thread winner with my gripe, but I can't for the life of me figure out why my husband cannot dial and order groceries. This is so typical. The other day, he emerged from his office, and said he needs to make an order. Like I am the only one capable of picking up one of the three phones and dialing the grocery store. Basically we need a minimum amount and he wants me to get up, scour the cabinets, and see what we need. "Do we have enough eggs?" he asks, standing in front of the fridge, while I'm trying to work on my laptop. Erm...I don't know. I suppose a mystery which is impossible to solve unless I stop whatever work I'm doing and look. ?? I get up, look, mention 3 things we could use. He looks at me and says, "Ok, could you please call that in?" !??! This is the same guy that will get up and walk to the store to get my feminine items, and text me to make sure he has the right product--or run out at 11pm to get me a Twix when I am having a fit. I just don't get it.

Aside from the Athenos (?) hummus, I have a couple of quick prep suggestions. I try to keep sour cream handy, and packets of onion soup mix for this exact purpose. You can whisk the soup mix into sour cream pretty quickly. Or better yet, cream cheese and cocktail sauce keep well. Pour the cocktail sauce over a cream cheese ball (or block), open a jar or can of crab meat, pat on top, and voila. Simple and sooo good! Especially with Ritz crackers :D

Hi Beebers, The program comes with a diet plan, and a method to calculate your daily calories depending on weight, height and lifestyle. I have made the calculation and I need 1800 calories / day, I then need to substract 500 calories if I want to lose weight, which brings me to 1300 calories. I am so desperate to lose weight, and if I don't follow a plan while I am exercising I end up eating for two, lol edited by pepito on 05/04/2013 Got it. I only know the basics of the program based on my friends reviews--I didn't know it had a specific calorie calculator. Plans are good for everyone! Good luck and hang with it! Congrats to you, SEY, I remember reading your first post when you started this. That's quite an accomplishment!

I am also reducing my calories intake to 1200 to 1400 calories / day. I find myself looking forward to a new exercise every day, fingers crossed it lasts. I will keep you posted Hi Pepito, can I ask why you reduced your calories to (average) 1300 per day? That's pretty low, especially if you are exercising HIT with a program like Insanity.

That's the downside of living in the Marina/JBR area for sure. I do, however, just love how we can walk to just about anything we could want; even in the heat it's not too terrible. We went out for a bite last night after I posted, and you could hear a pin drop on our side of Beach road. Then, two police motorcycles drove by, and "the" white G wagon, with another police car taking up the rear. Then, normal traffic followed close behind. It still blows me away that the Ruler of Dubai can drive around like that. And that the odds of having a firsthand encounter are very high. If this was the USA, they would have shut down the whole Marina, had a much bigger entourage, and security on the rooftops. Says a lot doesn't it!
