I just got home and I'm staring down at the "event." Sounds like Elvis? lol I had come (on foot) from the end of the Marina walk--The westbound side of the first bridge (going across to Grosvenor House) is closed off by police, but I think the one that runs by Marina Mall and the Radisson is open, but they have closed off part of the roundabout or something. Like those could get any worse. So it was dead over by my place, I guess due to the police shutting things down. I'm so out of the loop, I don't even know what the event is about. Fireworks seemed cool. Feel bad for anyone nearby trying to actually sleep at some point tonight.

I agree that time is money. I mean come on; all that time, they could have wasted ranting on expatwoman, or doing something truly useful, instead they brought back an unneeded item to retrieve the cash. What is the world coming to.

Haven't checked the prices, but the store in Dubai Mall opposite Minutes and a Stitch in time (down the big Waitrose corridor, just before the exit) have excellent brands. I can't remember if it is Lifetime Fitness or Precor that they sell, but very high quality stuff!

Paleo is great for people who can't be bothered to monitor their caloric intake. (honestly, with apps like myfitnesspal and all the other numerous calorie tracker programs out there, it is not the tedium of old! So easy these days!!) At the end of the day, no matter *what* you are eating, if you are not in a caloric deficit on a consistent basis, you can't expect to lose fat, or continue to lose fat. So basically, by default, people that live the Paleo lifestyle tend to be in a deficit, that's why it is a lifestyle which is touted for fat loss. If you are already worried about what you are going to miss, as opposed to the benefits you will gain, I would suggest getting on a nutritional plan that "allows" you a certain amount of calories per day, and is not restricted to "Paleo" foods. All that said, it really is not a bad plan at all. But it is a lifestyle, and you have to be willing to embrace it and follow it. It is no quick fix.

I am considering calling Jamal after hearing good things. I guess it is relative what one considers an arm and a leg? Can anyone give me an example of a basic 'black out" fabric for a sliding door set, what they've paid for 2 full length panels? Also, does anyone know if Jamal offers the "pull down" type curtains? thanks!

Were you able to get the Dubai driving license by simply paying the fee, with no test? Then the DL from your home country, if still valid, should work. (You can rent a car with an American driver's license).

Interesting post. I'm nearly a xmas baby, and in the 80's, such was the case that if you had a late birthday, you could take an aptitude test. If passed, you could enter kindergarten at 4. I even remember the test. "Point to the triangle, point to the circle. good!" lol I was always a taller one in the class and one of the brighter ones; from the surface I fit in, but this didn't balance the social issues with my peers. Ranging from the other kids teasing me for being a 'baby' to choosing me last to be on the gym class kickball team. If I raised my hand to answer a question, I was a 'nerd.' I was bullied. I was feisty about being bullied, too, so then I was an outcast. Naturally I hit puberty later, which can be humiliating. I felt embarrassed when my classmates were getting their drivers licenses in grade 10 and I was still waiting to turn 15 years old so I could take the driving course. Getting a summer job was also challenging. (I imagine that is also difficult for expat children here). I headed off to tour colleges when I was 16, and began uni as a green 17 year old. Despite a dual scholarship (academic and athletic) I did not do well because I was far too immature to handle the freedom and responsibility. It was never an issue of not being intelligent enough or lacking athletic ability. I don't waste any time wondering if things might have been different if I started grade 1 at 6 years old, or uni as an 18 year old. But this post did make me look back and admit that I think being so young for my class did affect a lot of things. Being the youngest child also affected my mentality so I can't blame it solely on starting year 1 at 5 yrs old. I don't think there are any absolutes; it will depend on the individual child. If you do choose to put your child in school at a young age, keep in mind they could face some of these issues, and ask yourself if you are prepared to take extra care to ensure your child is developing a good sense of responsibility, accountability, and self discipline.

*Shudder* I 'just' managed to wade through a few eps of the first series with difficulty, but left it after that. And the second series? Oh. My. Word. Just reading the reviews was enough to put me off. I just can't be doing with torture p0rn -- which is what this show is, essentially -- because it's wrong on too many levels. I'm sure it's popular with many, but for me? Give me political intrigue and drug runners and mysteries and on-the-edge-of-my-seat drama, and I'm happy. Gratuitous violence just doesn't get my gears into action. I know!!! Give me something like the Ring, or 'The Others." Creepy, ghosty, or better yet, clever. Keep that Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Vacancy, Saw or The Road!!! bleh!!!!! Hot surgeons for the win lol, always a good core for a series! Maybe I'll start Homeland by myself since goodness knows when DH and I can catch up on Dexter. So many good things said about it. Oh--and I downloaded a free ipad app called spideo--it is pretty cool! I plugged in my interests in TV and movies, and the catergories go beyond basic "romance" or "comedy." The suggestions it came back with were right on, as I had already seen half of the results. Worth a free download, and a peek :)

I really loved House. Mourned the end! A friend recommended Deadwood, and DH and I loved it! It got cut after the third season, though, and unfortunately, this means some of the storylines were unanswered at the conclusion or not properly developed. I would still recommend it in spite of that! Just started Dexter, like it a lot. DH needs to catch up to me so I'm "patiently" waiting :( I watched the first episode of American Horror Story, and um...I think that is too creepy even for me, and I love horror/ghost stories. Sticking with Dexter for the mo. Twin Peaks is a great classic weirdness in a box, love that RuthM :) Nip and Tuck was one of my faves from back in the day, if you can find that. Hot surgeons = I'm in! Lost was another great one if you like sci-fi or weird twists. A show you really, really have to pay attention to. Have fun!

Purple, did you notice if they have juicers/power blenders? If it's nothing to write home about on the SZR location, I'd just as soon buy my salt from the one in the Greens lol. I never "browse" there. They have omega juicers/blenders in the SZR store =) I believe Omegas are THE top of the line for juice extraction w/o damaging the enzymes, would love to get one of those. Already have it picked out, same one from home. However. As of late I have been researching the elusive Vitamix, which I'm pretty sure is what the smoothies shops use to crush ice, liquify everything perfectly, or at least it's similar. I like the idea of not losing the pulp and having it ground right in a smoothie! But holy cow, so expensive here compared to the US. (Omega juicers are also double the price). I wonder if the Omega blenders would be less than Vitamix (300 dhs) and still achieve what I am looking for. I vow to start juicing again this year!

Not a mom, myself, but since I have been busy working at night, I've gravitated toward fish and veggies for dinner. I'll share my super quick and easy routine. I heat up the oven when I walk in the door, then unload my things, greet DH, change into something comfy, etc. When the oven beeps that it's preheated, I turn the cooktop on and heat olive oil in a pan. Then I wash some vegetables and take fish out of fridge. Set veggies to dry, and baste fish fillet with some kind of sauce (as of late, my favorite is chili paste whisked with a little lemon juice, some sugar free raspberry preserves and a dash of soy sauce). On the heated pan, it goes, to sizzle and seal in taste, while I put veggies go on the steamer. Return to fetch the fish fillet off the frying pan, and toss onto an oiled pyrex dish and placed in oven. I turn the oven heat off as soon as it's in. Within 5 minutes, fish and veggies are done. I Of course if there aren't fish fans in your house, this won't work :) I like Marroosh's idea, too. I cook chicken and steak 2X a week and store in fridge, to dish into fresh rice I steam daily, and play with the spices, pastes, and veggies. But dinner I like fresh :)

Hmmm, really? I thought they closed down the Dubai Mall location and added two, including the one next to Oasis Centre on SZR. see this [url='>http://www.organicfoodsandcafe.com/[/url'> I have some staples I always purchase @Organics, but the Greens is close to me. I'd like to hear, too, if anyone has been to the new one and whether or not it has more offerings than the Greens.

I used to use these religiously. I bought the powder and added it to my protein smoothies, and I noticed increased thermogenic activity. I would sweat more, that was a very noticeable effect. This was in conjunction with a diet plan that gave me a caloric deficit at the end of the day, and in addition to exercise. If nothing about your lifestyle will change when you take the raspberry ketones, do not expect much from them. Most supplements work this way, that's why they are called "supplements;" they are to be added to a program, not leaned on for astonishing results--won't happen. It stinks that there are so many goofy before and after photos on the internet which make people think otherwise is possible. Of course, the small print is always there..."individual results vary" "these results are extraordinary" etc

I am a huge fan of my Lush shampoo bar, but now that I am washing my hair more often that usual, I think it's stripping it of its natural oils, so I'm in the market for something else. thanks for the share :)

The worst sceptic was my father who after his first visit, claimed the labourers would revolt much like the French revolution! He insisted this was the case and I should just wait - this was 4 years ago mind, and as far as I know it hasn't happened yet lol! And now after his 5th visit he has piped down and absolutely loves the place. People are ignorant, what to do! My parents were both skeptical! My Dad would always ask "How's the climate?" Not the weather--he meant unrest in this region. Well, it's a big region...a couple of my friends asked if I felt safe, saying I was really close to some serious violence...but then, these same folks are a stones throw from the Mexican border...so go figure! When my Mom told her friends at church I was living in "the Dubai" they were cooing, telling her how they've seen programs on tv and it looks fabulous. Once her friends gave their approval, only then did she start asking about flights here, etc. And of course a picture is worth a thousand words, I send them plenty of enviable views. So I hope they come out this year, with an open mind. Like so many posters here agree-you just can't get your undies in a bunch about it. Just like I laugh when I mention my home state and people say "Oh, so you voted for Obama?" happens a lot! lol

Blendtec, not sure. Vitamix I've not seen out and about, however when I google search the first few hits contain threads from EW, go figure. It appears there is only one place to buy them here, and they cost around 3000 dhs. In the US, they are less than 1500 dhs. :( I've been considering one of these, myself

Ok, this is coming from an non-Muslim woman (me). With that being said, I think my friends back in the US are less inclined to hold back on saying things or suggesting things which may have an "anti" connotation, because they probably would figure I wouldn't be offended if they did. But what do I get?? Tons of emails from friends and some family asking if I could help them get a job here, what is the job market like, etc. I have never had a question beyond a simple "what do women wear here" that refers to the cultural or religious aspect. The other comments or queries fall into the category of the grandeur of Dubai, and something that fascinates them. Does this make me the minority? I find myself telling them it is not as grand or easy as they perceive.

I had gallstones, but my symptoms were not limited to pain--the pain was tolerable. The problems were every time I would eat ANYthing, I would bloat badly. It was like I couldn't digest anything without gastrointestinal upset, heartburn, acid reflux, et al. My liver enzymes were so high, almost 300. 0-45 is normal. (gall stones + another issue caused the high enzymes) and I had bridging fibrosis. Because I had essentially a fatty, scarred liver, my doctor ordered immediate removal of my gall bladder because the stones were adding too much stress for my already damaged liver to handle. Any natural treatment pursuit as a primary course of action would have taken time I didn't have to spare. So I underwent removal through the navel. (3.5 yrs ago) I was happy I would not have any visible scars, but I was the 11th person the surgeon had operated on this way, can't say I was not worried :/ I had issues afterward that were almost as bad as the symptoms prior to removal. Running to the bathroom nearly right after eating. Or not being able to go at all. (Sorry, but these are very common side effects of surgery and should be addressed). I wondered, after 3 months, to what end? Is this improvement?? I also had issues with the site of removal, the wound would not heal. Had another surgery to fix the suture they had left behind that my body was rejecting. Once that was fixed, I had some relief, but not entirely. There were some things I could not eat and still cannot eat to this day. Egg yolks posed a major problem back then. Usually it is high fat items, especially fried food. So, good riddance lol. You can still digest fats but it is different. The gall bladder concentrates bile and then it is released during digestion. without the GB, the liver still produces bile but it is not as concentrated, and as fats take longer to digest than carbs or protein, they are best kept reasonable low in the diet of someone without a GB. I find that fats from fruits (avocado, olive oil) are much easier for me to deal with, whereas nuts and nut butters and oils are not dealt with quite as well. Another weird phenomenon that I couldn't really find any facts about was that after a glass of grape, I would be loopy like it was the first one I ever had. I am still this way to this day, a lightweight. Fine with me, again, not a bad thing. Everyone's reaction post-removal will be different. I can think of 10 of my friends off the top of my head that have also had their removed. Some people have had to make zero dietary changes. Some said they gained a ton of weight and attribute that to GB removal. Some have only a few things they cannot eat. For me, I found the best thing to do, to determine what I could and could not eat was to do a vegan diet, and slowly add things in one at a time to see how I reacted. It was no picnic drinking brown rice protein, eating gluten free oats, and juicing (hey, I was a carnivore, really) but it sure beat the alternative which was like playing russian roulette with my guts. I also took digestive enzymes geared at digesting fats, and probiotics which I still take to this day. Some people even take lecithin granules with meals which contain fat, and it helps to emulsify fats for easier digestion. Hope this rant of mine helps shed some light. In truth, everyone will react differently. Sorry I have no homeopathic advice to offer, because it wasn't an option for me. I am happy without my GB but also mindful of a few things that I have had to change.

Yes, Park Island is really nice. We lived there for 2 years and had few complaints regarding the property. None even come to mind at the moment. You can have a nice 2 bedroom for 130-140, even less. some of the 2 bed units on the mezzanine level have a garden/terrace if you would prefer that to a balcony. There were several of these available in January, not sure now. It is right on the marina; if you go down to the B1 level, there is a hallway, then a ramp that leads to the entrance to the marina walk...so I guess I would call that pram-friendly? Small children's pool, a playroom on the ground floor, and a lawn out front of the complex. We were a little concerned about the mosque going up next door, but couldn't tell you when it will be finished. Seemed to be going up fast and not so much now. It is always easy to get a taxi out front, on the service road. (re: the mosque, we thought this might cause a traffic jam on the same feeder road). My DH had meetings in Media City often and it was easy access to get there, traffic was almost never a problem even with the tram construction which is currently underway. We looked at a 23 marina unit, at the 2 bedrooms, in January. At that time, all the 2 beds with good views were taken. We just couldn't stare at the shell and core of the Pentominium every day, especially not for 120,000/year! The flat was huge, but a lot of the space seemed almost unnecessary. The amenities at 23 were very nice, and the residents I spoke to said they were really happy with the facilities. I'll admit I didn't pay attention to amenities for little ones when we toured because I don't have any. I understand you are very interested in 23 Marina, but consider checking out a unit at Park Island, too. x

Hi Back-to-Dubai :) You will see weight loss threads pop up on this forum several times a day, sometimes. You are definitely not alone. One of my friends is a fitness pro and life coach in the US, and her facebook page has a "daily dose" which is motivating and inspiring whether you are just starting out or a fitness freak. One of my favorite doses of hers was "Focus on what you are gaining, not what you are giving up." Well maybe that is easier said than done, if you've never been in shape. You don't have a frame of reference, or remember how you felt when you were in good shape because you never have been...or it was so long ago it seems like a dream. So it is easy to feel deprived, or to think about what you can't have, foodwise, on the new eating plan you've chosen. Everyone needs to start somewhere. I am not a fan of "fad diets" but South Beach in my opinion is not unhealthy whereas some others are questionable at best. The first stage will be challenging. It will indeed. But you will also lose a good amount of water weight, and this will give that boost to keep on with it. And that's just it. No matter what, promise yourself you will keep going and you won't quit. Some final advice I will leave you with is something to avoid, and it is something close to my heart, because it perfectly described my attitude when I struggled with fat loss. You are going to slip. You are going to screw up, whether it be from lack of planning, giving into temptation, or social life obligations that lower your inhibitions. The KEY is this. Don't make a bad thing worse. If you freak out and eat a piece of pizza, you may as well enjoy that slice. You made the choice and it cannot be undone. Don't hate yourself for it. But stop, and think, as you savor the taste. Without judging yourself, remind yourself that this is not furthering what you are trying to accomplish. Do not get down on yourself, and think "Oh great, well, I've gone and screwed up, I may as well eat the whole pizza." This happens to many dieters, and I know it happened to me. There is a big difference between eating one slice and a whole pizza!! So be tough, but when you mess up, also be gentle on yourself. having an iron will and self control takes practice, it is a series of choices that accumulate into a behavior, and it takes time. Try your best to love yourself today, love that you are choosing a better life for yourself instead of throwing away your chances at happiness. That in itself is a very positive thing :) x

Sorry about the disgusting trash on our balcony. It is really hard to be in that position and feel like you can effectively do nothing, because the culprits could be anyone, and no one would willingly admit to ignorant behavior like that. We live on a very high floor (not your building) and with the recent fires this past year in other areas, and the multiple fire alarms that have been going off in my building due to a malfunction, I worry about stupid handling of cigarettes, too. If there was a fire in our building, we would be running down 40+ flights of stairs--hopefully. It is also a wind tunnel on high balconies at times; I think sometimes the cigarette phenomenon is accidental. We had a guest over last week that was smoking on our balcony, and left the cigarette burning in the ashtray while he went to go inside for a beverage. I ran out there and grabbed his cigarette--hello!? It could easily fly out of the ashtray and land somewhere. Whether it is intentional or not, mishandled cigarettes seem to be such a problem in Dubai. Never had this issue in high rises I lived in, in other big cities. Have you talked to management in your building? Our management here will actually post notices in the elevators, complete with rogue cigarette butts taped to the notice; in my last building of residence, management posted pictures of damaged patio furniture with burn holes.

I would add do your very best to avoid waxing within the week before or after your menstrual period. I cut it too close once and it was very painful; your skin can be red and sore for a couple days after as well! :'( that's the only time I can say it truly hurt, but I may go get some Emla myself as you can never be in too little pain, I suppose. If your skin is red or irritated afterward (pretty normal I think) and we are not talking broken skin, applying raw organic shea butter is amazing. I used to use it on razor bumps and it works excellent for this purpose as well. Agree that you'll never go back! I purchased the Shea butter from Ripe market btw <em>edited by Beebers on 08/03/2013</em>

Being an Aussie where the UV rays are so bad I have been burnt many times. Banana Boat is probably the best brand as a sun cream. As far as freckles go its in your genes. So if a parent or Grandparent has them then I think you will get them. DS has lovely skin and goes wonderfully brown and I do go brown but have lots of freckles, so sun cream will not stop the freckles. oh, I can't imagine in Australia what it's like. No one has freckles in my family--everyone is some variety of olive toned and gets very brown. The only place I freckle is on my face! Realistically, I think it is just hyperpigmentation that has kindly dotted itself rather than appeared as patches--like a pregnancy mask. I called them age spots the other day and DH said I'm a lunatic: they are freckles. Whatever. freckles are the little things I got on my nose when I was 5 years old from a week at Disneyland. This is probably payment of the post dated checks I wrote in my 20s when I was a tanning bed freak, coupled with my love for outdoor activity in inescapable sun. "Someday" I'll get really vain about it, have photofacials or something, and wear a wide brimmed hat at all times lol

If you've got difficult skin, i.e. prone to breakouts, irritation from fragrances or certain ingredients, then i would say no product that works is too expensive. I have no problem pouring some $$ into masks, peels, and things which give an immediate glow but it takes weeks and months to determine if a certain moisturizer was "worth" the price paid. That being said, I woke up with serious eye bag today :/ and I've got an eye depuffer/lifting serum which is pretty expensive--but the performance is so awesome I don't care. It looks like I actually slept last night!!!

I get very little sun exposure to be honest. But I do have pigmentation spots and I have a typical Dutch/British skin, so I do need the protection even for minimal exposure. Plus, I wear hijab and if I am out in the sun for too long without sun block, I have this red mask on my face at the end of the day looool. Aha I see. lol mask lines, I wouldn't even think of that! Maroosh, do you get out in the sun at all? I'm aggravated because I love being outside and on the beach but NO sunblock has protected me from getting freckly. :( A large brimmed sun hat does, but I can't wear that when I'm training outside. I wish there was one that was really effective when you are out in the sun for say, two hours exposure time.

Does anyone else just wear their iPod when they shop at places that are more notorious than others for having lots of children around who *could* be naughty, noisy, hungry, tired, etc? Problem solved!

You could post a free ad on Gulf News but that may attract similar people as Dubizzle. You never know unless you try. In my former position, my employer had me post vacancies on Gulf News, and ugh...1/10 of the applicants had related experience or degrees and although the ad was clear, I would still get a ton out-of-the-country applicants that wanted a skype interview, and requested to be flown in for an interview. ???

atrain, I think you mean Zumurud. I don't live there, or know anyone who does, but the location is nice. I run past there in the mornings during "rush hour" times and it is not real congested, or doesn't seem to be really affected by the new tram construction in the marina. Close to the metro, absolutely. It also has a grocery store on the ground floor. From listings I have viewed, it seems to be a good value regarding square footage and views for the asking rental rates. HTH x

My former crossfit instructor posted this on his facebook today and I thought I'd share: "Your kids will become you. Be who you want them to be" so true! How is that true? That's one of those ridiculous warm and fluffy sayings that means sqwat. You give your children oppourtunities and life skills and then cross every finger and hope they make it in the world with some form of happiness. And health and happiness is priority! How to use a credit card is hardly a priority, learning value and respect for money and their surrounding yes, credit card......no. I'm sure not everyone agrees with that saying, but warm and fluffy? I don't think I would use those words to describe the saying, but to each her own. You say health and happiness is a priority, okay then. This came from a fitness professional, so I believe his underlined point was that children pick up on parents nutritional habits. If you want healthy kids, set the example. :)

I like the My Fitness Pal app, it's great for beginners or those who are advanced and used to calorie counting. I used to keep a daily log the old way--journal--but since I have gotten an iPad mini, it's brilliantly convenient. I have 2 beefs with this app. For one, it doesn't calculate how many calories you burn from weight training, only the cardio. Disclaimer: I am not a techie, so possibly there is a way to adjust this, and I just need to catch on! What is a REAL eye opener is if you actually log everything you eat and drink. I have heard the whole "Oh, I only drink white wine, or clear liquor, no carbs, etc..." or "I only eat pizza once a week, no biggie..." Right...log that into the app one night and check the totals on dinner out with drinks....yowsa! Which brings me to beef #2. It doesn't account for what certain calories actually do to your metabolism and fat burning capabilities. Even if you only had 200 calories of sugar cookies and were under your daily minimum, the app won't account for the fact that you spiked your insulin with those cookies then stored the calories from the subsequent meal instead of burning through them. Same thing with alcohol; it doesn't account for what alcohol does to your fat burning capabilities, it just simply tabulates them as a caloric number, not the impact. those things being said, it is an easy app to use and can really get you accountable and on the right track :)

I do not follow a diet. Have followed several in ages past. Now it's a lifestyle. And blah, blah, blah...yep--sometimes you're just still bloomin' hungry even when you have adopted a healthy lifestyle! I find it is usually when I am doing everything optimally. In other words, slept good the night before, had a killer workout session in the morning, and so forth...I have concluded that sometimes, it's just your metabolism kindly letting you know that despite all that junk food and neglect over the years (who, me?)...it still works despite efforts to annihilate it :) Doesn't bother me unless I am at home, so when I feel like this, the best thing to do is get out. Somewhere, anywhere!

I'm not a fat free freak, trust me! I just like this particular brand! The red tomato pizza I ate the other night had enough fat to keep me stored all week. Gorgonzola/pear/walnut.....mmmmm!

I was thinking the same thing, ravenous today :) I just spread some tomato paste on a rice cake, sprinkled Italian seasonings and salt on top, with .5 oz fat free cheese melted on top :) at least I'm not thinking about pizza anymore, and we are talking about 60 calories :) whoop whoop Pickles are another great go-to for me when I need to just eat something but not a meal X <em>edited by Beebers on 06/03/2013</em>
