If you are looking for something a little more hard core, I would suggest you look at Fitness Zone gym-in cluster R JLT. They are fully equipped for the more hardcore trainers- might be slightly more expensive but from what I have herd thy have amazing equiptment- all you could ever wish for :) Yes Tribe fit is quite near, it's just behind the Marina mall I think. I'll check that one out, too, thanks! I prefer the machines where you load plates on..like hammer strength. And a decent free weights area with more than one or two benches. It takes just going and visiting :) I don't do any classes. I did Zumba once and my heart rate got over 190, and I released so much cortisol I think it did more harm than good lol

DR, I feel like I am re-living memories hearing that account. Everybody has a limit to what they can take. I say good for her. If I didn't stand up for myself, I don't think I would be who I am today. Sometimes internalizing those things are worse. I am not condoning violence, and goodness knows there is too much of that to much extreme these days. After a boy on the playground through a chain at my face, because I arrived first at his preferred play area, I was scared. I had been told not to tattle or whine at that age. I came home with half a tooth, and wasn't able to hide it long. When I told my Dad what happened, he said next time, fight back. If you are assaulted, fight back. The world is a tough place. Of course being 8 yrs old, the incident already being over with, they called the principal, and our class schedule were switched with minimal punishment. The next time I was physically attacked I was 16, and I didn't hesitate. I swung, and I was sorry later :( Although this girl was huge and a total bully, she was all talk. I fractured her cheek and it could have ended poorly for me. Because I was defending myself I was not punished, but her parents were ticked. (although not surprised, and she was a bully no more). There's never usually a happy ending with any of these things. The thing about adolescent girls and the "mental warfare" games they play; those things can go on for years, and be equally destructive to self esteem and the like which can carry through into one's 20's. I say the more parents are involved with their kids and keep involved, keep communication open and even-keeled, the better. Because if you leave it up to kids to make their own decisions, or they feel they cannot talk to you about their pain, they won't always make the smartest decisions. You sound like a wonderful parent. :) Glad to hear your daughter has grown into a happy young woman and congrats again on her marriage x

Thanks CF :) I see what you mean. Gosh--that atmosphere is pretty ubiquitous. :) Had that in the US, too. Abu Dhabi was probably the worst! Free weights trolls, love 'em. Guess that is why I love bodybuilding hard core gyms. All the dudes are more concerned looking at themselves in the mirror, posing! lol That's not bad rates for FF. DH would be going JLT and I'd be going to Al Fattan. My DH thinks if we both sign up together for a year we could get a pretty good deal. At least that is what they told us a year ago. Sounds more reasonable than I remember. Will Tribe fit would be near to the FF in the marina? I suppose as long as the gym has the equipment I need, my biggest thing is location. edited by Beebers on 13/01/2013

Yes I pay about the same monthly as I would for a rental, for eg I used to rent a small automatic for the same as I pay now for a bigger class vehicle. There are a few dealerships that offer this, SixT if you want a Mercedes, Shift Leasing for Nissan are the ones I know of. I am with Shift and very happy with their service, the vehicle and the financials. Happy to provide any other info you need :) hth Yes, that makes complete sense. Very cool! I may pick your brain a little further when we get to that point. Hopefully, that's quite soon. :) x

Oh, OP, I think it would depend on the individual car whether I would buy new or used. I bought a luxury SUV back in the US that was 2 years old with little mileage. One owner, and they babied it. Here, if it was a luxury car, I would look for a gently used, and one that wasn't having a body style change for a few years. You save so much $$. But if it was a compact or 4 cylinder car, I would buy new.

Ok, this is exactly the conversation DH and I have been having. We rent cars sporadically because he's not always here, and I like to walk, but I think it's time to buy something :) Didn't know the lease to own option was available here. Again, Di@DXB I am picking your brain it seems! Do most dealerships here offer that, and Are your monthly payments similar to what you pay for rental cars? In other words more than you would pay on a loan? We were going to just pay cash, but this sounds a little more enticing.

There's a tailor in Ibn Batutta I always use, its down the service corridor that leads off from opposite New Look, at the end there take a left through the service doors, very reasonable. Sorry don't recall the name. Me, either. But most my friends that don't see someone in Satwa go to Ibn Battuta. When I didn't know my way around, I got 2 pairs taken up at Stitch in Time in Dubai Mall..I think I paid 100+ a piece which is way too much.

So sorry to hear that, OP. :( What your DD is going through happened to me as a child more than a few times. What helped me was when my Mom told me she was bullied too, as a child, and that all of those involved grew out of it and were friends later. She told me how much things change as you get older, and how kids can be cruel. One time she approached my teacher, who was best buddies with one of the bully's moms. Nothing improved from that, so she spoke to the mom in question, in church of all places. The mother believed her, and was upset at her daughter. My teasing at school, consequently, got worse. Like everyone else says, these things don't always end well when parents get involved. Unless it is physical, I personally wouldn't go to the parents. One particular summer, my mom got the bright idea to send me to a really cool 2 week camp where I met lots of new friends that didn't go to my school. She also enrolled me in various sports lessons and sport camps. Another really great confidence booster. My Dad also got involved and told me not to worry; what did I care? He made it very clear that these kids were insecure and I was to ignore them, because by doing so, I don't fuel their fire. In other words, they can say and do what they want, but don't give them what they want, which is for me to get angry and sad. :) He also told me if it got physical, to stand up for myself, and not to take that kind of thing lol! But that was a different place, and a different time.

I've been in this situation and I know others that have too. It's not uncommon here. Has your friend spoken to their boss about it, and what have they been told? I was in a situation where the company lost funding, and 3 weeks after my missed salary, we agreed I wouldn't work again until I got paid, and I was eventually paid. I also had a good relationship with my boss, and had a senior position. A friend of mine also had a similar situation, several months of salary owed, and she was paid the back-pay, plus more, granted that was many months later. I also know people who have been promised back pay, and either stayed on board or quit not to get paid. The situation is nearly impossible to predict! Your friend ought look for more work, it would be foolish not to. As far as continuing to go to work, that is up to them.

Really :( Not surprising, I guess. We almost joined when they first opened up as they said they would have a member limit--something like never to go over 1000 members. I suppose I am more concerned about the equipment and the upkeep, and if people rack their weights or leave them lying around, which is my pet peeve. I don't require a trainer, or do any classes. We had only gotten the quote for a year paid up front...do you mind if I ask you what the rates are? tia x

First of all, the Whirlpool that is sold here is not the same as Whirlpool as made in the USA - we get the stuff for the Eastern Europe market. After saying that, we bought an expensive made in the USA one originally and it only lasted about 4-5 years. The replacement Whirlpool not from the USA lasted that same period of time. I am now on LG. We're most likely purchasing an LG. I've been a fan of anything they make for a long, long time. Plus the price is right!

It was good you got the plain for the need you had then as the plain is more of a healing balm and fantasitic for any skin irritation, but for everyday moisturing use try the whipped it's really so much lighter and easier to use and absorb. Cool :) I'll try that next time! Sorry OP....[img'>http://www.pic4ever.com/images/237.gif[/img'> edited by Beebers on 12/01/2013

Did you get the whipped one with Argan Oil, that's easier to use as a moistuiser than the unwhipped without the Argan?, But both are fabulous for the skin. No, I got just the plain shea. Didn't see the other. It just takes a little working between my palms, not too much work like cocoa butter :) It really did help that chem reaction I had, too. I alternated it with calamine. lol old school stuff.

I use nothing but organic whipped Shea Butter with Argan oil, its natural, has anti aging effects and is and a wonderful night or day moisturiser, I get complimented all the time for my skin and get taken as a good ten years younger than my 'certain' age! Di! I have been using the shea at night, since you recommended it for my other issue! For some reason I haven't been using it in the a.m. Just thought it might be too much. Maybe I should try that...

Neno, how long have you been here? I never tried to meet anyone, it just happened organically for me. One of my best girl friends here I met at a beach club when I was not expecting it. It wasn't even the type of place I frequent. I'm sure the EW coffee mornings are great, but never been. I just do my thing, go the places I like to go, and picked up some friends who have the same interests. I tend to disagree with the gym...classes may be a bit more social, but when I'm there, I'm there to train, not to socialize. Good luck x

I always liked the over-priced Creme De La Mer for a moisturizer but have heard the origional POND's cold cream is fantastic. I also love Creme de La Mer face cream! When I splurge on that every couple of years, I use it under my eyes and it works. Tried their eye balm once, and it wasn't enough for me. Also can't find the Pond's for the life of me in Dubai. I prefer that for nightime makeup removal. :( They have every other Pond's face product, but not that, it seems! Marsbar, what's your budget?

Okay so if only 1g fat for a protein shake, and say a paleo salad/soup for lunch, and a meat/ fish based dinner I should continue to lose weight you think in Feb? I think I may enjoy the shakes more, would I just buy them in any health store or are they the ones you get at the stands in the middle of the malls, and roughly how much for a box? Elmpark, I don't know if that's enough calories? After breakfast you may be hungry soon. You could eat 1/8 cup almonds with that. That scoop of protein powder only has 110 cals. Maybe add another in the afternoon, too. They come in jugs, like this: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/whey.html The best prices I have found are at the nutrition stores and pharmacies in Dubai Mall, in the corridor that runs from Waitrose and around the corner. There are at least 5. I paid 199 dhs for the last 5 lb jug I bought. x

Are you still continuing the Body For Life program? Is the exercise routine too rigorous( as I have back problems)? Is it something we can do at home or do we have to go to a gym? Hi Kate, I did the BFL challenge in 2000 and ate that way exclusively back then. Now, I the way I eat follows some pillars of BFL, some pillars of Paleo, and some pillars of the Dukan diet. I found my own groove. The exercise routine for BFL was 3 times a week of 20 mins cardio, and I chose the recumbent bike. I would think that would be easy for you, given your back problems. The BFL weight training program I don't recall--I was lifting 5 times a week and I don't believe BFL required more than 3 weight sessions. You could do things at home, yes. If you have some dumbbells, a kettebell, a swiss ball, or resistance bands, that covers a lot of ground. For cardio, if you do not have a machine, you can walk around the block for cardio. x edited by Beebers on 11/01/2013

Wow Beebers, you should charge for such brilliant advise, arent we lucky to have you here. Thanks a ton, and its not too tough for me, i have enough self control but somehow it disappears on the weekends. As for exercising, are you saying I should do 1 full hr of cardio 3 days a week and then 2 days 1 full hr of weights? And what do you mean by split the upper and lower body on weight days, sorry if I sound dense, but didnt get what u meant exactly. :) You know, I tried charging here and my fee was really fair--lower than the states. I got inquiries but no takers. And I had a fitness nutrition blog...that virtually no one was reading. I took it down when I had an unrelated job because some of the creeps at work googled me and looked at my pics. Yikes! What I would love to do is write a book, but you have to sell out a bit, in that you must find a one-size-fits all--that's what everyone wants. But I don't believe in a one size fits all, so I struggle with fashioning that. You're don't sound dense. I recommend doing cardio on the days you do not do weights. An hour? If you are currently doing a half hour, stick to that. You don't need more cardio, you need a cleaner diet. If you do too much, your body will get used to you burning those extra calories, and in a way, program itself that you will always do that. In other words, how you got there is how you have to keep it up. For splitting it up, I mean do weights, for starters, 2 days a week. One of those do legs, and the other workout, do upper body. As you lose fat and gain strength, you could split it up even further to address areas that need growth. Example: you notice your arms and legs are getting toned, but your shoulders are a bit narrow compared to your hips. So you could do weights 3 days a week, and make that third added workout just a shoulder workout. Sometimes it is not how much you weigh, but what your figure and shape looks like. I think most of us want hourglass :) x

Thanks for that, will limit the good fats then for next few days...[b'>shame as the avocados are just ripe![/b'> Sorry last question for a bit as I know you mentioned the whey protein only shake...do you think once I finish the 30 day challenge I could use that as a breakfast option and have a normal paleo lunch and dinner? Already feeling a bit off protein for breakfast so think after 30 days I will need to do something! [b'>Are they fat free?[/b'> Just take it down a notch on the fat, you don't have to totally omit; you might be holding water, waste, or not sleeping enough--lots of reasons for stagnancy. The Optimum has one gram of fat. Honestly, it totally hits the spot when I have a "midnight" chocolate craving. Which is 9pm for me--bedtime lol. It's so versatile, too. Mixes in oats. Or if I want a more substantial snack, I'll toss in dried coconut flakes for some fat. You mentioned avocado, I have mixed it in a choc flavored shake in the blender, it as sooo rich! And you can eat tubers--I mash sweet potatoes sometimes and add vanilla protein with cinnamon. List goes on!

:) Mumcurious, if it wasn't for the ladies on this forum, I would not have found my awesome hairdresser, tailor, and too many other things to name so I try and be useful where I can. Truthfully? I would change a lot. But a big change is overwhelming, and the feeling that arises is "I'm denying myself so many things." This is the focus, instead of what you will gain, especially if you have been the same weight for 9 years. Did you know it's better to eat clean for (at least) 4 days in a row, then have a big cheat meal on the 5th day, instead of doing a little cake here, some red wine there, and so on? It allows your body to get in a metabolic swing in the right direction, otherwise you are just kind of taking one step forward, then one back. If you are happy with your weight or body composition, fine. But if you are exercising to improve your physique, you won't get anywhere without some strategic eating and giving up some things. The whole "eat what you've always eaten, look how you've always looked." Drinking alcohol, even mildly, sucks, here's why. When you consume, your liver is busy detoxing alcohol as a first priority. So any food you're consuming while alcohol is on your system is likely getting stored, guess where. Plus--I'll be the first to say I want pizza, Mexican food, or Chinese after drinking. I don't go home and eat a can of tuna, usually! So that post drinking meal is going straight to wherever your body likes to pocket fat. For this reason, I don't drink more than once every 6 days, and I try not to combine a huge meal with it. Weight training and cardio can be done on separate days. Have you considered 3 days a week cardio, and 2 days a week weights? Split the upper and lower body up on the weight days. That's a good start. You mentioned your thighs were an area you want to firm up...start by doing a solid leg workout 1x a week to shape those thighs. Tummy will come with proper diet. So you don't totally freak out, keep your bread: I recommend this bread for your morning sammy. Modern Bakery makes a bread called "Evening Bread." It is the most diet friendly one I have found here and it's good. Try sugar free jam, and if you will miss margarine, go for some coconut oil to spread on the bread. If you want an A+, have some egg whites with that. There's NO protein in your breakfast. Have an apple for your fruit snack at work. Try a grilled salmon or chicken salad for lunch (lean meat + salad veggies essentially). If you are hungry before dinner, eat about 15 almonds as a late afternoon snack. Keep your dinner as is. If you can do that 5 days a week perfectly, you'd be shocked what can be. Try not to eat KFC more than once a week and spread out the drinking, even minor consumption. 2 days in a row of that, and you're guaranteeing acetates are going to hang around in your system. Those help keep us fat, too. x

I heard of the saying "you have to suffer to look good" but it seems that only the first part of the sentence applies to me for the moment!! ;) Sure thing. Suffer? When the reward is a hot body, I would just thinking of it as work--after all, there is a huge payoff :) If you don't quit, you'll be surprised for how short a period of time you had to "suffer" and the results will be so satisfying :D

FH, I would probably eat a meal with protein and carbs at 10. This gives an hour to clear your stomach out before you train yet you'll have energy. I get up early, so if this was my workout schedule, I would probably have a meal at 7 and another at 10. After training, I would have another meal within 45 minutes of completion. Beebers, am still sticking with my paleo but noticed that today having not weighed for a couple of days I have gained weight. I have still been sticking to the plan, but done no walking as have been recuperating from a small operation. I can't believe that simply nt walking has caused this. Do you think that I should cut back on the good fats until I am able to exercise again? Really annoyed as eating so much better than I have in ages, plus had to fast for about 12 hours due to my op!!! edited by Elmpark on 10/01/2013 Well, losing weight isn't always linear. I tracked my loss for 180 days last year, and the chart went up and down like a liar on a polygraph test, but in a downward direction. When was your op? That can mess with your body anyway, expect inflammation causing you to hold water and throw your metabolism off. That may be it. Also, good fats are good, yes, but not calorie free...if you are not expending any energy, you may want to cut your fat intake in half even if it's good. Not the nicest thing to talk about, but operations, even minor, can affect your digestion. You may have some waste that needs to pass. Just stick to your guns, keep doing what you're doing, and in a week or less you might notice as much as a 3lb drop in a days' time. I know it's annoying! @lou86, there are a myriad of good protein shakes out there. If you want to do a meal replacement, I like BSN's Syntha 6. Has some carbs and so yummy. You can buy it at many pharmacies and nutrition stores around town. If you want straight protein, you could do Optimum Nutrition 100% whey protein. Also yummy and readily available here. I have both--they're made by the same manufacturer and high quality. I wouldn't add dairy milk, neither of these are gross with water! @SanRan :)

I seemed to lost track of this post, will recovery shakes help me loose weight? A protein shake has many uses. After a workout they offer quick recovery. This helps you build and/or maintain muscle. If you do 4-5 meals a day, 2 of which are protein shakes, yes you will lose weight. As long as the other meals are clean :)

I have to admit though I still am very clueless about the recovery shakes, and i have always been told that Amino Acids are really bad for your body - isn't that true? I think I need to do some googling to decide what to have :) :) I used to have an e-consult business back in the US. It just is not lucrative enough for me here plus I am not certified. Amino acids bad for your body? Proteins are made up of amino acids. I am trying to rack my brain for myths about this and can't recall anything. BCAA's are made up of the amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. Specifically, they are the most anabolic and anti-corticoid. This is a great example of an amino powder which is amazing and explains what they do. http://alrindustries.com/products/chaind-out/ I would just keep it simple. If you train, try to do 2 shakes a day. One after training and one as a snack added to your eating plan. Don't overthink it or over-research it or you will drive yourself nuts. Protein shakes are a great way to increase your overall protein intake and your body can utilize the whey protein faster than meat, and with less nitrogen wasting. (nasty by-product of your body digesting protein. Can cause kidney stress and liver issues. Case in point=Atkins). x

N.Kaye, it certainly is worth a shot when you are dealing with that kind of pain. I had foot pain last year and couldn't figure out what the deal was. My googling led me to believe it was plantar fasciitis, but I went shopping for new running shoes before I got around to seeing a doctor. Being a runner, you probably have good shoes, but my heel pain went away last year when I bought Saucony's. Always used to wear them, but had Adidas at the time I had the heel pain. Haven't had problems since, and I swear the right running shoes for the right arch make a difference. In re to your comment about having wheat in you diet, the body registers a lot of wheat products as simple sugars and can affect your body the same way as actual sugar. Hope you find relief! x

Wonder how many of these guys are out there. Last year one approached me in Oud Metha. I was on my mobile phone in an alley of sorts, so I was a little freaked out at his aggressiveness.
