I'd do Al Qasr - go to the Talise spa - lie by their gorgeous pool or on the beach - they have a really nice beach menu - burgers, chicken, fish - all very tasty. You can eat in the pool bar area or they can serve you by the pool or on the beach. Great views of Burj Al Arab for the all important 'girls weekend' photo call!

my little boy has various mild allergies and we were told by his Dr in the UK to use Benedryl Once A Day. Not sure if you can get it in Dubai as I always got guests to brting bottles over with them to keep my stock. Fenestil is also really good. Have a chat with one of the pharmacists to see if Benedryl is available and if not see if they can recommend something. The benefit of Benedryl is it won't make them drowsy.

June is monsoon season in Asia,so Europe would be your best bet. Cyprus,Greece and Turkey all have nice beach resorts. We went to Thailand in June and it was great but you have to expect some rain. We loved it as it was warm rain and we just swam through it! You'll get much better settled weather in Europe for sure.

DubaiCat - take a look at this thread makes for interesting reading. there is no way that you will be paying 25% lower than the market rent if you only rented within the year so there's no way you will be entitled to a rent increase. If you get onto the rera rent index calculator you can check. good luck - you will be fine..... http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=172452

I bet we still have a hosepipe ban though! I've never seen so much rain in my life. We've got blue skies and sunshine today though in between drizzly showers - the grass has never been so green and the blossom on the trees is stunning. Have dug out my winter clothes again and am dressing as if it's December! I just hope the sun is out and stays out for all the street parties we have planned for the julbilee weekend in June!

You've had lots of good ideas there, I'd go with the Eton Mess as you can just buy those ready-made small meringues from Spinneys and use those. I'm afraid I can't help you on timings as I always land up scrambling round the kitchen trying to get everything done at the same time. A couple of things - Yorkshire puddings are traditional with roast beef, not with lamb, so why add to your stress by cooking them as well? You could easily make a mint sauce, which [b'>is[/b'> traditional with lamb and very easy to make yourself - see recipe here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/realmintsauce_67706 I usually cut garlic cloves into slivers and pierce the lamb all over and put the garlic in to add flavour, as well as resting the lamb on a bed of fresh rosemary sprigs and strewing rosemary on top of the lamb whilst it's cooking. Good luck, enjoy :) We have to have yorkies with every type of roast dinner in our house - tradition goes out the window - if it's a roast - it's got to have yrokies or I would have a riot on my hands! Love slivers of garlic in lamb - even nicer when it's cold in a sandwich!!!!

I always part-boil my potatoes first, then toss them in a little bit of oil and butter, some herbs and seasoning, then roast them. Roast the parsnips in with the potatoes. OR, boil the carrots and parsnips together, then mash them together adding a little butter - always love that, then pop in a dish and bake for a while - yum. Don't overdo the Brussels, nothing worse than soggy sprouts. Love Eton mess as a pudding. Also another dead easy one to do is bread and butter pudding. Tonnes of recipes for that online. Ooooooh I do a bread and butter pudding but I grate in some orange peel and slug in some cointreau - it's amazing! A top London chef told me to try it and I've never looked back!

Ho hum, here we are again. We rented direct from Dubai Properties last June, so we didn't have to deal with a private landlord. DP promptly gave 'our' villa to a private landlord in exchange for something else he'd bought that now isn't being built. So far, so bad. We emailed his secretary last month to ask if he was willing to renew the tenancy. She emailed back today saying yes, he is. If we pay more. We currently pay 130k in four cheques. He wants 135k for one cheque or 140k for two cheques. So, instead of a nice leisurely day with the little people tomorrow, I'll be down at the rent committee. Gotta love renting in this place. The absolute irony of it all is that we own a villa in Springs that we rent out, and I don't think we could have been better landlords this year (without blowing our own trumpets). Karma needs a kick up the backside! Dubaicat - your first wrong move was to ask if he was willing....... you need to advise him that you intend to renew your lease - you have every right to stay there for another year at least and as this is the first year renewal (you will be paying market rate surely from DP anyway) so it will be at no rent increase in accordance with the Rera rules and regs. I would draft a new note stating that you have looked into this and contacted the rent committee and you wish to give them formal notice to renew for a further year at the same rent, in accordance with the law........ Keep it short and sweet and to the point - you are protected. If the new owner wants you out he will have to serve you notice to quit at the end of your existing contract for 12 months time - so.....whatever way you look at it you are fine to renew for a further year at the same rent. good luck!

Easy pudding and very british - buy some meringues. Bash them up into small pieces. Buy strawberries and slice them up. Mix the meringues and the strawberries with double cream - hey presto - Eton Mess. You could pre-cook your veg and just zap in the microwave before serving. You could also pre-cook your yorkshire puddings and pop them back in the oven to re-heat while you are carving the meat. to make it really easy I roast parsnips with the potatoes and I also roast some small onions and a whole garlic bulb. gives the potatoes a good flavour. I squeeze some of hte roasted garlic into my gravy too - makes it really delicious. If I do roast lamb I also put in some fresh rosemary into the gravy - yum! Have you done yorkshire puddings before? I really struggled for years to make them but I now produce amazing ones after using the recipe from Nigella Lawson's Feast cook book - perfect yorkes every time! Good luck - I'm sure it will be absolutely delicious.

Have a look on this site, you can filter as to how easy or complicated you want to be. www.bbcgoodfood.com They have an ultimate roast potato recipe. For pudding - Eton Mess, crushed store bought meringues, fresh whipped cream and strawberries all mixed together and if you put it into nice glasses such as Martini ones, it looks fab. Edited to say - I always read the comments under the recipe as they often give useful tips and are a good guideline as to whether the reipe works or not. edited by MirdifIngrid on 26/04/2012 Great minds on the eton mess!!!!

I am a big big fan of the children's garden. My 2 went to the one in the green community - Jumeirah branch opened later. They had so much fun and learnt well in a fun environment. Great teachers. It gave them a great start and instilled an unconcious love of language. they have gone on to do arabic, french and spanish and seem to love learning how to speak a different language. I wojuld have no desitation in recommending - best start I could ever have given my kids. They loved going in every morning - never ever had a day when they didn't want to go and they both love going to school now - so.....don't know their secret but TCG did it for my family!

Repton is 22 from year 1 onwards. Most classes are 20. This then is perhaps the best option so far for small class sizes. There are up to 12 classes in earch year group though so not a small school like wellington primary!

Dear Izsy I meant at the rental committee, do you wait until 1 month before the end of your contract or can i start procedures against my LL like 2 months before? As you will be either very very pregnant or already with a newborn a month before the end of your contract I would recommend you go into the rent committee and have a chat with them and explain the situation. You have a contract to stay until July anyway but the rent committee close over the summer and no cases are heard then but are scheduled for when they open. You will be allowed to stay past your renewal date as long as a case has been filed. When we had out problems I wanted to know where we would be living before leaving for the summer so we were given one of the last days the court was sitting. We of course won our case - you cannot be evicted after 1 year and you have to be given a years notice if the LL wants to move in - so you will win your case for sure it's just whether you want it hanging over you while you've got far more important events to deal with! They are really lovely in the rent committee and will not want to see you being messed about so close to your due date.

I know what you mean Izsy. I always referred to my housemaid by her name! Their contract refers to them as servants and domestic workers - I don't know anyone who refers to their housemaid as such. I think referring to them as nannies is also odd - a Nanny in the UK is a highly trained childcare person who has taken exams for the qualifications to be able to work as a Nanny. some people do have helpers though.......many still do their own cooking, look after their own kids and run the house - their 'maid' really is there just to 'help' hence the term I think. I think it's an interesting comment........and one which is bound to provoke quite a response!

Claire, it shocked me that they aren't better informed but they really are that clueless. The wife came to the house from Abu Dhabi where they live to tell us we HAD to go because it's THEIR house. DH said we didn't and that "according to the law" and she cut him off and started screeching, "WHAT law??? What LAW???" You know what Mking - many really are not aware - not all LL are evil - it's just the evil ones that make it so bad. They often don't realise about the years notice - yours certainly didn't otherwise they would have given you notice last year!

Seems like there are quite a few people all in the same boat. Our lease expires on the 10th July this year, it's our 1st year in the villa. I'm expecting my 1st on the 25th June, so naturally we started preparing the baby room. Only to have an eviction notice placed on the gate of our villa from the LL saying he is giving us 5 months notice to move out cause he wants to move into the villa himself.. When DH called and said we want to renew and cannot move because of the new arrival, he said it's not his problem, it's his house. That was back in March, we then thought ok, mayb we'll try neg for an extra 6 months, so that we don't have to move in the middle of summer with a baby about to pop at anytime, only to get a text from the LL yesterday to say that we can now stay, however the rent will be increased, by 53%.. So I guess RERA here we come.. Thank goodness our contract is renewable and it's already been registered with RERA.. Make sure that you give your intention to renew in writing within the time frame as stipulated in your contract. Even though you have been served notice - you still need to uphold your side of the contract. So if you need to give at least 60 or 90 days notice then please make sure you do that - verbally is not enough.

Mauritius - we stayed at the Hilton Resort there when our kids were small and the kids club was superb. It was run by mark warner then but not sure if that's the case now. Many kids clubs will not take under 2s without an adult going in too which defeats the object of a kids club in my eyes! this one took them from babies. I think the Beachcomber Hotel group also take the children from very young into the kids club. I love Mauritius. Not sure I'd chance Thailand after they were on tsunami alert only the other week. Love the Shangri La Hotel in Oman - very kid friendly.

Same thing happening to us at the minute. LL tried this last year at the end of our first year in the house. Wanted it for his family. And when we said it wasn't enough time, he said we could stay but for a lot more money. And now he's trying the exact same thing on again. For those who aren't aware, it is the Rent Committee and not RERA that you need to be speaking with. The number given earlier in the thread is for RERA. The Rent Com. is 8004488. I found the former useless and the latter exceptionally helpful. He was silly then because he could have given you a years notice to quit last year - now he'll have to give you a years notice to quit now and you will get your extra year.

We used DASA from dubai back to UK - they were excellent. When we moved to Dubai we used UTS Bournes and DASA were the clearing agents. they were so good that we asked for the same on the reverse. I got quotes from other ocmpanies like Crown and Allied Pickfords but chose DASA. They were quite a bit cheaper and we had no issues at all. Very good to deal with and everything was good. Made a stressful time pretty easy actually.

My gardener used to get all his plants from the plant souk and I'm sure he told me that he only paid 1 dhs per plant. I was happy to pay him more for him time and travelling there to get them and pick our the best ones for me but..........he only ever charged me a tiny bit extra - when it all looked lovely I would give him a nice tip - if he'd charged me over the top he would have been gone for ever! I would, as the others say, tell him you did not ask for the plants - tell him he should either take them up or show you the receipt for the plants. Or.....tell him you will pay him what you feel they are worth. Make him understand that you only want him to do the things that you ask - and in future if he does something that you have not asked you will most definitely not pay him. Cheeky boy!

If my child was not reading to a teacher I would be in there like a shot. How can a parent helper know whether a child is struggling or what guidance they need. I would make an urgent meeting with his form teacher and year head and insist that he is heard by a teacher at least twice a week starting from right now....... You say you have been concerned for a while now - if I were in your shoes I would have had enough and most definitely be taking it up with the school. How can the teacher say all is OK when she's not even hearing your child read. My 7 year old reads to her teacher at least 3 times a week - most times more - and if she is not reading to the teacher she reads to the class TA. She has a reading book home every single night - they are clever because she is obssessed with animals and all the books she has have some animal in them so they keep her attention and most nights she reads far more than she has to. On average she gets through 3 books a week (reading time at school and then homework reading with me at home) and some weeks - especially if there are really full of animals - a book a night. Perhaps your little boy needs his books to be changed - maybe the stories are not pushing his buttons. You are clearly concerned and a teacher nodding and telling you he's fine when she's not actually hearing him read much at all is - in my book - unacceptable. Do it now before he falls further behind and loses his confidence. both my kids learnt to read in Dubai and both have an amazing lovel of books - something that was most definitely instilled in them at school - not at home.

Nicky - you have every right to stay with no rent increase - don't let these landlords bully you for extra money. The law is the law - if you pay the extra 5% to the LL then you are also going agsinst the law! It costs to file a case but when you win the costs are taken off your rental cheque so your LL will end up getting LESS rent for this year than last as they will have to pay the court costs. Our LL thought he was above the law and you should have seen his face when he was told in no uncertain terms that we were to stay in his property for at least a further 2 years at no rent increase and that he had to pick up the court costs. This is the only way these greedy Landlords will learn. Good luck and don't let them bully you!

If you are concerned (and you know your child better than any!) then I would make an appointment with the head of the reading department if there is such a person. In our school we had a head of the reading programme so it was easy to know who to deal with. If your school doesn't have this structure then I would make an appointment to meet with the year head to understand where he should be in reading for the year and see if he is falling behind. They should then have a plan to get him to the level he needs to be. My little girl is 7 and in the last couple of weeks has really gone up a gear with her reading - I'm pretty sure she's ahead of where my little boy was at the same age - they are all different and get to stages at different times but if you are concerned - go back to the school for advice. good luck.

I know only oo well how hard it is to be so fr away from home when something like this happens but your mum will know how you are feeling. Sending you a very big cyber hug for today. Your mum will be treated like a celebrity if she's being cared for in te same hospital your sister works in. My mum had surgery in the hospital where my sister was working and everyone knew about her and came in to see her and reassure her. The very best of the best will be looking after your mum. When my dad was in hospital I would call him very late for me but around 8/9 pm for him most nights. We had such lovely chats. I was the last person he spoke to at night and he loved that special time. So, although you are so far away you can still make a difference. I hope all goes well today for your mum. Look after yourself too your young family need you. Make sure you eat and take some quiet time to think about your mum and snd her positive thoughts. I am in the uk now so if I can help in any way don't hesitate to let me know.
