thank you a lot! I've read other recommendations about this Dental Centre, it is not close to us but close to my husband job place, Tornado Tower. Eleonor Not so close to you but Dr Nafeh at the British International Dental Centre was great with my children. Google for contact details. Based on 10th floor of Salam Tower just off Corniche road by the refurbishing Sheraton.

dear all just arrived, and looking for a good orthodontist for kids in Doha, possibly (but not necessarily) close to Education City - Al Rayyan - Gharaffa area (we live in Education City Compound). Our DD wears braces and she needs to be monitored here and she will need to have new braces soon. I read the advices on this thread but they are old, so maybe some new advice is available thanks Eleonor

dear UET I just arrived (2 days ago!!) but my husband is here since a couple of months. about schools: you may search my desperate posts about the school situation.... unless your husband employer has reserved places in some schools, I would say that it is very difficult if not impossible to find a school place now. Enquire your husband's employer and ask them if they have a fast track to some schools that they might eventually sponsor. If not, ask as many schools as possible. Some schools that might have places (because they are new) are Cardiff Int School, Loydence Academy, GEMS, and Doha British School in Al Wakra (South of Doha). About the cost of life: I had a lot of advices on how much expensive it is, but, compared to Italy (my country), my husband did not find it so expensive for food, if you are willing to change something in your habits. e.g. you can find Italian rice, necessary for the Italian "risotto" (you cannot do it with basmati rice) and it costs 7-8 USD per kilo (3-4 USD per kg in Italy) but basmati rice costs very little. Just change your habit on how to consume rice. We will use Italian Rice when we want to offer an Italian dinner to friends and workmates, and not in everyday life. This morning we went to the wholesale market somewhere in south Doha with an Egyptian colleague of my husband, and we bought fresh fish for 1/5 the cost it has in Italy, and fruits and vegetables for a lower cost compared to Europe. Today I will explore the Carrefour hypermarket in the city centre and I will tell you..... take care and good luck Eleonor

as for my personal experience, I subscribe what Nomand 1 wrote completely. My DD is now 8, I brestfeeded her for two years, in the meannwhile, at 6 months she had the first tooth and started eating, starting from our normal food (red lentices, mashed fruits, parmesan cheese, mashed potatoes, some finely grinded cereal soups, vegetables.... I never gave her pouched food, especially meat. I found the smell of pouched meet nauseating, how could I give it to my small treasure? :-) Apart from that, if the baby drinks milk (especially your milk) and eats vegetable proteins, does not need to eat meet in advance: she/he can eat it at 8, 9, 10 month, when the moment of eating "real" meet arrives. The only precaution: beware of allergenic food (i.e. food that can cause allergies): the later you give it to the baby, the lesser "tickets of the allergy lottery" you buy :-) on the other hand, the most varied and natural food they try, the most healty diet they will have in future. let them experiment, even with hands, touch the food, and never compel them to eat. a brest feeded toddler is able to decide when stop eating because it is too much. Letting them free to decide when it is enough is a way to educate them not to grow fat. And never use food as a prize or punishment, for the same reason, prevention of obesity. goog luck, Eleonot

I am glad that you considered what I wrote. if your baby stays at home with you for one year, consider starting any vaccination some months before she starts going to spend her daytime in a community of children, not before, because it is not necessary as the possibility of taking any serious illness as poliomielite or hepatitis B or difteria is virtually null at home. take care, Eleonor Thank you! You're right. Will evaluate all my options before making the decision. Was panicking but the doctor today told me not that important to get right away also b/c TB isn't a disease that the baby can catch easily and since she's not in daycare and at home with me for a year I think we shoul be okay.

dear mbds, as it is not mandatory to vaccine your baby, you might take it easy and wait a bit, or at least do not get stressed if you delay the vaccine a bit. Consider which are the chances that your kids are exposed to TBC, and consider on the other side the risk to stimulate their immunitary system at this early age. There are so many autoimmune illnesses that are coming out in these recent years, and scientific research cannot explain the cause. I am not saying that they depend from vaccines, and from early vaccinations, but I will not tale the risk if I could. Some years ago I had a serious auto immune illness correlated to the flue vaccine. Anyhow, we started to vaccine our daughter from the age of 1 an half year, not before. The BCG vaccine, anyhow, is considered useless by many medical doctors, as it is an old vaccine, not much effective, and because TBC must be defeated in other ways, e.g. giving to the population better living conditions. Thanks. Just did our third round to Doha clinic to try to get the darn BCG done. Were told now that the nurse only sits on Thursdays. Wonder why the 4 times we called and 3 times we showed up they couldn't give us that exact information regardless of us specifically mentioning the BCG! Wouldn't have minded the wild goose chase as much if it wasn't 40 degrees outside. Poor baby is all red from the 1 minute runs from apartment to car, car to hospital and back!! Sorry for the rant. I realize its not mandatory but i'm a bit paranoid and thinking it's better to get it done than not. Will try Al Ahli tomorrow.

Hi, I've never heard of it too, but if you visited the school, if you talked to the principal, the teachers and so on, and you are satisfied, it should be ok!! :-) there so many schools in Doha! tell us what are your impressions, it might help others! cheers, Eleonor Hello ladies, We've lived in Qatar for about 2 months now and we have been busy trying to find a good school for our kids. We ran out of options since most of the schools we like are full and we just happened to find out about this school called Step One International School and we end up enrolling our kids there. The school seems alright but we have noticed that everyone we ask about the school they say they never heard of it...so it makes us wonder why? We are on waiting list for other well-known schools and also we are planning to apply to other schools as well but in the meanwhile our kids will be going to this school Step One International School. Anyone with any information about this school? Thanks

Well, what it is forbidden to bring, as far as I know, is mainly wine and alcohol, pork meat, and the usual forbidden things on an airplane. Some said not to bring books that can be censored, or toys with electronic parts, and that if you send books, you should make a detailed list. Same with DVDs. Some people say that computers and hard disks could be checked. I know that it is forbidden to bring Israeli currency and religious objects and books, apart from ones for personal use. About clothes: they recommend to dress modestly, so maybe it is useless to bring tight and revealing clothing. What to bring: I guess it depends on where you will be living (a furnished house?) and what you cannot do without. As far as I know in Doha you find almost everything. I heard that it is difficult to find decaffeinated tea. I also heard that there is shortage of books, i.e. bookshops do not have a great offer. any other advice? I'll fly on August 21st from Italy, with my daughter. Eleonor Hi everyone, well it's official, it's this month we move to Qatar. I was wondering what we can and can't bring with us. I'm currently doing Herbalife and wondered if it would be possible to stock up and bring this along? Also, does any one have any advice as to what else to bring along. Thanks.

thank you very much! can you please tell me the brand and the kind of model, as it seems a bit costy, unless it is a very good one. thank you a lot HI I recently got rid on my little icecream maker and invested in a lovely one I got in Lakeland in the City Centre. It was about QR 1300 and has a compressor (still sits on the kitchen work top) it is fab, make the mix, put it in the fridge for two hours then the ice cream maker for about 1 hour and wow great icecream. Can not keep up with the demand at the moment. Warning though the calories in homemade ice cream are scary!

My driver has a 4x4 and he helped us move. Depending on how big the boxes are you may not need a removal company. we don't have a driver! at the moment we don't even have a car yet because we could not ask the driving licence until the RP was ready. boxes are not so big, a pick up is enough, but not a normal car. thank you a lot

dear all, my husband went to SEC this morning to see if he could give them the assessed school reports of our daughter. this time I can share with you useful information, at least, and not only pose questions!! :-) here is his report. ------------------- First of all, the building is called "Attestation and Certificates Equivalency Unit" , and is located on C-Ring Road east of Najma Street, 50 meters east of the Gulf Cinema on the same side of the road, right in front of the Gulf Times headquarters. This was not easy to find out since the website of the SEC gives very imprecise, and wrong, indications, and of course nobody answers the phone; indeed, this unit used to be in another building, still on C-ring road but one km west of where it is now, a few meters east of the Holiday Villa complex; indeed, the sign is still up there, to trick people like me (who originally went there, only to find a closed building and with no indication that the Unit had moved and where it had moved to; luckily enough I found an Arab there who was there for the same reason as me and who found out by phone where the unit had moved to). So, they told me that in order to have the certificates attested the child must be here and must have her RP already. They said that once the application is placed, the attestation process takes no more than three working days (so, we need to go there once to apply and a second time to pick up the attested documents ...) The good news is that, as they told me, it is up to the school principal to decide whether the kids can start attending school before the process is completed; tomorrow morning I will indeed call ACS to find out whether they (as I hope) will allow Irene to start attending even in case the process is not complete yet. The documents we need to bring to the SEC are: (a) photocopy of the kid's passport, including the page on which the RP is stamped; (b) school reports (one original + one copy for each report): the latest report needs to be attested (I assume this means: by the Qatar embassy), the one prior to the latest need not be attested.

Also my husband employer (Qatar Foundation) apparently asked only for degrees and police certificate to be attested. Birth and marriage certificates only translated into English So I have the same doubts of yours. may be it depends from the employer. My husband, which is in Doha (I am still in Italy) keeps saying that it is fine, but I am not at ease as it will be very difficult to have those documents attested when we will be in Doha. who is your employer? if it is QF our information could be right.

dear, a quick answer: - my friends at Cardiff: children will start in September, but for the moment the impression is positive. A small school, very new. No great facilities but a friendly environment. For sure they will improve the facilities year after year, as other schools did. A small environment will facilitate new friendships and will help in getting at ease. police certificate: a certificate that attests that you did not have problems with justice. My husband employer requested it, I do not know if it is a must. I suppose no, as your husband has not been asked for it. you husband employer should help you with documents required for residence permitting. have a nice we, Eleonor

I am in the same situation, hubby in Doha, I'll move in August with my daughter, aged 8. she will go to ACS but I have friends with kids at Cardiff. about documents: as far as I have understood, you need: - last two years school reports, attested as written in the previous answer - birth certificate of kids indicating who are parents (I did not legalise them) - marriage certificate (I did not legalise it) - your degrees, for job - legalised your local authorities and by Qatar Embassy - police clearance certificate (legalised as above) - we also took our birth certificates (me and my husband) - lots of passport photos - driving licence. If you have an international one, you can use it for 6 month, otherwise you convert it here about blood test: I know I'll have to do it when I arrive, I could not understand if I can do them al home (I would have preferred so) but I do not know if within 72 ours vaccination cards: every school has its rules as I understand. and maybe every employer: Qatar Foundation did not ask my husband to have 6 month salary before we can join him. bye, good luck, Eleonor

dear AJA thanks for your helpful answer. A last question please: do they want the residence permit of the kid, or the parent's one is enough? if they want the kids residence permit, we will have it for september, not before...so, will it be useless to go before we have the kids residence permit? thank you a lot Eleonor Hi Eleonor We had our reports attested in March/April time. I would recommend a personal visit rather than email/telephone contact. We were eventually successful in getting the reports done after some 3/4 personal visits to the office. We had quite a difficult experience with them as they wanted specific things in my daughter's reports from the school in UK. They ask for mark sheets and final grades for each academic year. They also want to see copies of passports and RPs. All the best with yours.

We will be living (I suppose) in Education City and DD will attend ACS School 4th grade. I am keen in meeting new friends, expecially families with kids. cia, Eleonor This is a great post. My husband flew over to Doha from Scotland today, well actually, he is half way there to be precise. Myself and 2 kids will be joining him in August too and I actually feel really overwhelmed, more that my other half will be organising accommodation for us without me. I already feel a little more settled in joining this website, it's good to know there is a friendly atmosphere between all the expats ;)

Question is: Is it permitted to ship: - toys and games (my child's ones) - books in Italian (novels, my child's books - I'll avoid essays on politics) - non perishable food (I would like to bring something Italian, for a dinner with new friends-colleagues- of course no pork no wine) otherwise, is it better to bring these items with us in cabin luggage and ship clothes, instead? thanks a lot Eleonor

I think there are duties to pay. I've heard 5% of the value of shipped items. I have no idea if this apply also to non-new personal belongings no idea about places for putting your things temporarily. Did you check with a shipping company? Eleonor Hello ladies, Some questions I need your help with. We are probably going to be shipping our stuff in a palette as we do not have enough for a full container. 1. Do they apply any duties at the time of pick up? I am not planning on bringing any furniture but really want to bring my art collection and house accessories since we will be putting our house up for rent. I am leaving it furnished but not leaving all my accessories. 2. We have been told we will be put up in temporary accommodation for the first little while. Do you know if there is any place to store some boxes? I would prefer not to open anything until we're at our final location. Appreciate your help.

Uhm, I won't be sure they can have a guarantee place at Qatar Academy. My husband will work for Qatar Foundation, who is the OWNER of Qatar Academy, but we had no places at all!! In Qatar Academy Arabic and Islamic studies are taught. I have no idea if non Muslims can skip Islamic Studies. Eleonor. Sorry just seen from another thread it's SIDRA (I was assuming it was one of the Education City universities). In that case I *think* you should be offered guaranteed places at Qatar Academy for your kids but check with them. I'm not sure how it's working for the older children. I can't comment on Qatar Academy - it's certainly not on the 'bad' school list but it is not on the 'super popular list' at least in part because entry rules mean that it's not an option for most people.

dear Sandpiper, Why don't you show up at schools and at some institution of the national health service? your message gives me the occasion to rise a question: If you apply to any of the private schools you will see that in the admission form they say that they cannot take any child with any special need, even the most simple. Moreover, the schools select and admit children on the base of their school reports, so only pupils with good academic skills are admitted. So I fear that (I don't know, it is my impression) teachers are not able to distinguish if a child is dyslexic or not because they don't have experience (at least in Doha) with children with any sort of special need - even the smaller one. If you offer this service to schools - teaching the teachers how to spot a dyslexic child - and also give consultancy in case there are some children that need it - you will offer a great service to families. this is my impression, but I will encourage you to try. All the dyslexic children that I know come from bilingual families of which one language is a non phonetic language like English or French. I would not be surprised if in Doha there would be many!! thanks a lot for your message Eleonor Hello, I am a qualified and experienced specialist teacher/assessor for adults and children with dyslexia. Does anyone know of any organisations or educational institutions that might need my services? Many thanks

dear Erazmo yes, this is what we did. We started the applications to schools (8 schools!) in December 2013. O n the website of the schools you find the application forms and the list of the documents that they need (sometimes different from school to school! you might get crazy in this application process!) the schools requested us a lot of documents, among which the school reports translated into English - we had them directly in English from the school in Italy - but not an official legalised translation. we have been accepted by ACS-Doha. we have paid the registration fee some days ago. after the acceptance letter from ACS, we obtained the official legalised school reports. the school did not ask us to have the legalised copies in advance. We will give them to SEC when we will move (my husband will come to Doha next Saturday). Another document that is required BEFORE school starts is the residence permit of the child. I found ONE school that requires it before accepting the application: Loydence Academy. We will have the residence permit during this incoming summer. from the school side, it is all. We also legalised other documents, for the work residence permit: our degrees, the police clearance certificate of both of us. We have a marriage certificate and birth certificates of all the family translated officially in English, but not legalised. I hope it is enough. bye, Eleonor Thanks Eleonor. If I understood you well: First you sent translated only but not legalized documents to the school. Then, after got accepted by the school, you got school reports fully legalized for the needs of SEC. School reports are only documents you fully legalized/ got attested by all necessary institutions. Am I right?

maybe I am missing something, but the process, in our case, has been: - first, submit admission forms to several schools, including documents as teacher references, immunisation cards, school reports, and so on. - then have your child/children accepted (if they accept them) and not find a place and then provide the documents. Anyway: we sent all the documents to the schools without any previous legalisation. We had then the school reports of the last two years translated into English by the school (we are Italians) and then attested by the Italian school authority on behalf of the ministry of education, then by the Italian ministry of internal affairs and then by the Qatar Embassy in Rome. Now, the original documents will be taken to Doha to be given to the SEC, the national qatary authority on education. So once you do find a place and menage to enroll your child in a school, you need to provide all sorts of documents: teacher reference, medical form, immunization record, school record.... My question is which of these documents needs to be fully legalized/ accredited, and which can just be translated into English( for instance with original school seal and teacher signature on teacher reference form). Fully accredited in all court institutions and embassy/ or just original document with a translation attached to it? Thank you!

Dear Jabah if you have to find a place for 3 kids, I think that it is too strict to focus on the curriculum: you would have to take what is available, unless you are ready to take them in three different schools..... And for September it is quite late now.... Anyway, there is a new school, named Cardiff International School, which gives the English and Wales curriculum and could have places for the lower grades. May be they don't provide higher grades. good luck Eleonor Hi, Can anyone please recommend a British curriculum school apart from Doha College who have no places in all year groups for year 5, 9 and 10 to start in September 2014? Sorry, I forgot one question: - does this kind of visa let the daughter to attend school? may be not if does not entitle to have a residence permit? thanks Eleonor dear All, a question about family visa: a person will have a contract as a free lance from Qatar Foundation. the question is about the family visa: - wife and daugher (8 years old) will be able to have a visa for six months, renewable. Right? - to have a new visa, they have to exit the country and enter again. Right? - How long do they have to stay away? - is a trip to Dubai enough? - does this kind of visa entitle them to go out from the country whenever we want? - in case they go abroad before the six month, can they use this trip for asking for a new visa or, for asking the new visa, they have to wait until the end of the six month period anyway? Thank you a lot for your answer Eleonor

As you can see if you search the forum, the school situation seems to be desperate this year. The only school that I heard of which could have a place are Loydence Academy and Cardiff International School. There is a new Newton school opening at Barwa City and a new Doha British School at Al Wakra, but they are far from the centre of the town. Maybe something will move in September, as many families who are moving don't say anything in advance to the schools. Unfortunately I cannot help more.... Hello everybody, Do you know any school with free places for this age (born in 2009.)? Does anybody know what the AWIS school could offer? How about Phoenix Private School...?

Do you mean Hepatitis A Eleanor? The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people coming to Qatar be vaccinated for both Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Hepatitis (A, B and C) is quite prevalent in the middle east as far as I know. Yes, sorry for the misspelling. I think that we all get the Hepatitis A vaccination as soon as we can. Do you know how to get the vaccines in Qatar? I don't think we are in time to do them in Italy as my daughter did the Hepatitis B and the anti-polio and anti-tetanus in the last months, and she cannot take too many vaccines in a short time lapse, so we have to do it in Qatar when we arrive after august.

In this time of the year it is very difficult to find a school with free places as the applications for 2014-15 are mainly closed. Try also Loydence Academy and Cardiff International School, they could have spots. It is not worthy to try with ISL as it is full. We applied in January but we don't have a place. The problem with young kids is also that schools give preference to siblings (of course) so the first grades are occupied mainly by siblings. As your kids are still very little, you might consider a form of home schooling for them for one year, maybe together other families, and apply for the next year, starting very early the application process. Good luck!! Hello again, I've been researching schools and just wanted to know what anyone's thoughts on this school is. We are moving to Doha around August/September and seem to be hitting a brick wall with getting my kids enrolled in a school, my little girl will be 3 next February and my little boy will be 4 next March. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! Many thanks.

I am interested in meeting you! I will arrive in August, let's talk after the beginning of school Eleonor Hi Everyone, I have lived and worked in Doha for the past three years and, after being witness to the poor standards of living many people here endure, I have decided to take action and start-up a charity project to support such people.

I am not in Doha, we will move during summer, but we thought not to close our home bank account now, and let the remaining bills be paid from that account. Most of the bills are paid automatically from the bank, others we can pay them via internet from the home bank account as if we were in our home country, not involving any bank transfer from the Qatar bank account. Can't you do that? Hello! We finally got my husband's departure date (he leaves in a month!). We still have a lot to sort out. Is HSBC the BEST option if we still need to bank in the U.S.? We will have LOTS of bills left to pay off in the States but it sounds like it is very expensive to do wire transfers (45-50 USD each time)and HSBC seems to require pretty large minimum balances to waive those. Is this just something I have to accept or are there best practices?

Uhm....so there is space for a business! :-) I must inform the Panini here in Italy and do some marketing when I arrive!!! :-)) Actually, what I can do from here is to buy them in bulk for you here and send them to you - the same that you can get from UK. May be you can hide the stickers and pretend that you buy some stickers every day in some special place and release them to your kids (husband and son) every now and then!! Thanks Eleonor! My son (and husband) want to collect the football stickers but I don´t think they sell them here :( We could have them sent from the UK but it´s not the same as we´d have to have them sent in bulk. It´s a shame as I´m sure lots of kids would want to do the same.

Hi, btw if you know somebody who can host family fun parties which will involve activities for the whole family, do let me know. I will for sure as soon as I come to Doha, in august. We will go to live in a compound owned by QF or something like this, near Education City, and I know that there is a sort of club for children, so I may ask if they want to host a family party. bye, Eleonor
