Hi all, Thought you would like to know that "Honey" as we've re-named her (she was not responding to Queen her given name) is fast asleep on a sofa next to my husband. A delightful girl, our 3 other Danes have welcomed her into the home without any issues, we had forgotten how bouncy and overly playful a 60kg puppy is like ;o). She romps around with the other, has worked out where the dog flap is and is very much at home. Thank you ladies for bringing her to our attention, she is safe and sound and enjoying life how a Dane should be :o) Regards Amanda *LIKE* a whole lot! Awesome work as always Amanda. Good on you Sabrina for getting help for the pup. Great Danes in Dubai

Try this one - it was recommended on this forum a few weeks ago and I really like it. and so did my DH who doesn't like the very sugary icings either. I didn't try piping it though so you may want to do a test batch first. 200 g Cheese, Soft, Medium Fat 100 g Sugar, Icing, 1-2 drops red and blue food colouring (to make violet) Beat the low fat soft cheese in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Sift in the icing sugar and beat well. Add the food colouring. Chill for 20 minutes, then pipe or spread on top the cakes I just LOVE cream cheese icing, but it melts in minutes here (Aus)...no AC to keep things cool. :)

I know that but what icing recipe should I use instead of buttercream? You could always make the buttercream...but use salted butter instead of unsalted; then half the amount of butter and half vegetable shortening (helps it keep it's shape even in HOT conditions); drastically reduce the amt of sugar. I made some yesterday...recipe said 4 cups of icing sugar. I used 2 cups and it was perfect. My version - 1/2 cup salted butter, softened 1/2 cup vegetable shortening (Copha here in Aus) 1tsp vanilla 2 cups icing sugar, sifted few drops of milk Beat butter and shortening with electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Keep beating and add vanilla. Gradually add icing sugar until fully combined. Add milk drop-wise until desired consistency reached.

I know this possibly opens a whole other can of worms, but when "bumbo" 'seats' are mentioned, I just can't help myself. One of the recommendations for starting solids is that the baby should be able to sit well on their own and support their head steadily. If a baby 'needs' to be in a bumbo, they possibly shouldn't be having solids yet. I firmly believe that babies should be allowed to develop and reach milestones when their little bodies are fully ready. For a healthy, normally developing baby/toddler, I think bumbos, jolly jumpers, walkers and the like are a BAD idea. They may make it easier to entertain a child who's showing frustration because they want to sit/walk/jump, but there is a physiological reason why they can't do those things at that point...their bodies are not ready.

Unless things have changed, the way Salik works is you get charged every time you pass a Salik gate. HOWEVER, if you pass two consecutive Salik gates [i'>traveling in the same direction [/i'>within a certain time limit (I am not sure but think 45 minutes), then you will only be charged for one gate. For example, using Dubai Cheeky's trip, from Marina to Dubai Mall, DC would have passed both Al Barsha gate (next to MOE) and Safa gate (next to Safa Park) in less than 45 minutes. She would have only been charged for the first gate (Al Barsha) - Dhs 4, and there will be Dhs 0 next to Safa Gate. On the return trip, DC would have again passed the two gates, Safa and Al Barsha. In this case, she would have been charged for the Safa gate and not for Al Barsha gate. @The Mrs: You do get charged for the return trip.:) ...and is there still a maximum charge per day? It certainly used to be as MC describes...only one charge while travelling on the same road in one direction within an hour. Same for the return journey - one charge within an hour on the one road. AND you'd only be charged a max of *three* (??) times per day no matter how often and how many gates you passed under.

Culture and tradition play a big part in how a baby is fed and cared for. Often, people continue to do things based on their cultural beliefs even when scientific advice differs. So true...it's not necessarily about being "clueless and negligent." In that context, 'negligent' suggests that the person does or should know better but chooses to do harm. If people don't know any better, they will continue to do as the women around them have done for generations. Even if women do seek advice from medical professionals, they don't always get 'good' advice. While in Dubai I was occasionally given some of the worst bf advice I have ever heard...from allegedly highly respected paed's no less! (THAT, to me, is negligence!) I grew up in educated, middle class Australia. My mum produced so much breast-milk that she was encouraged to donate for the premmie babies while still breastfeeding me. Rather forward thinking for the very early 70's we might think...but she was also encouraged to continue donating for premmies and orphans, while strongly pushed to wean me before six weeks and get me on a good bottle of formula with raw egg yolk in it. That was the accepted medical practice at the time. Wind up or not, it's good to get constructive discussion happening...we never know who may be reading and learning something new. :D

We went with the highchair that DubaiCat has and I am soooo happy with it!!! I was going to fork out an obscene amount of money for a Stokke but went the complete opposite direction with the Antilop. One of the BEST purchases I've made yet for DD. But with a highchair like the Stokke you do use it for years which is a plus. ... I've been saying for years that the IKEA chair is the single best baby purchase we ever made. It's so lightweight and unbreakable that we even took it on overseas holidays when our accom did not provide highchairs. Our Antilop has been twice to Tuscany and once to Istanbul. :D It's only downside is the very poor 'harness'. It is absolutely fine as long as the child is 100% supervised (as he/she should be anyway) because it only has a waist belt, and even that is very easy for them to wriggle out of. If we'd had the cash for a Stokke Tripp Trapp, I would have bought that in a heartbeat. Not quite as easy to clean, but a friend's child is still using hers six years after she first sat in it. The Stokke is a beautiful, practical, versatile piece of furniture.

...On a slightly different note because I am not perfect and I have been stopped more than once with out my licence. I have replaced mine twice. Tut tut do I ever learn? The fine is fifty dirhams I think but you must pay any and all fines on your car first. It takes fifteen minutes. The staff were fab and I left feeling good. Last week sore Arab woman drove into the back of me with no licence and the police were lovely to her. Accidents happen. Peace out! I also had to file a police report about my lost license before I could be issued a new one. Both getting the police report and then the new license were amazingly straightforward processes, but it was a lot more than 15 mins and 50dhs. :) Like all things Dubai, it seems to depend on the official on the desk on the day. edited by Green-ish on 22/10/2011

I stopped to help a collapsed elderly man in London who had been passed by several people and ignored. He was well dressed and clean so couldn't have been mistaken for a "down and out" As a nurse, I recognised that the man was in a diabetic coma so stayed with him while my friend popped into a nearby shop to call an ambulance. (This was before the era of mobile phones). Having been to China and experienced great politeness and friendly help when required,[b'> it is wrong to dam a whole nation. The story was relayed on Chinese TV and many people were horrified. During my stay in Doha, I was strongly advised never to stop and help anyone who had collapsed in the street or mall etc as you could be in so much trouble if you did help and the person died. There is good, bad and apathy in every country.[/b'> SO well said Joyce. It's awful and unthinkable (to us) but we cannot know what is going on in the lives of those people in that country. My heart goes out to the family of the little girl. I have not stopped thinking about them.

I wish I hadn't seen it. She was run over once, and no one came forward to help her. Then she was run over again. How can these people sleep at night, or live with themselves for even one second? Poor girl, I can't understand why these things happen to innocent children? What could she possibly have done to deserve this? :( I read in a couple of the articles that in the past, 'good Samaritans' have ended up having to pay hefty 'compensation' to the person they helped. I *like* to think that many of those people would have stopped if they did not fear potential massive financial hardship.

Something tells me I 'll regret finding out but, can you give more detail? Was he run over on purpose? What happened? Poor thing sounds terrible I read a few (upsetting) news reports...it seems the 2 yr old girl wandered out of her home and onto a busy street/alley. She was hit by two vehicles and remained lying on the ground. CCTV shows 18 people passed and 'ignored' her, the 19th tried to help her. :( She's in hospital in a very bad way. What is the probability of the police knowing a maid is making extra AEDs in someone's house? In the time I have been here police have never been to my apartment and I almost every week get under my apartment door a hand written note from a maid offering her services.... Is it really a big risk or it is the same as other things in Dubai i.e. not having alcohol license, living with your boyfriend, etc. that a lot of people does and nothing happens? Just asking. It's a while ago now, but uniformed police and non-uniformed officials used to stop maids coming and going from Mirdif villas all the time. (2yrs ago)

Fish aren't clever enough to be thinking, "Ewww...not toe callus again." LOL. It's gross to us, but it's just meat to them. That said, I also could never stick my feet in a 'bucket' full of fish that had nibbled on goodness knows how many other pampered toes. Turns my stomach too. Each to his/her own though...

dramaqn is right...the Goodsphere is not a humidifier, but the amt of water it goes through when the AC is on suggests it does put some moisture back in the air. :) I also have a humidifier and while it does the job, I can't leave it on overnight or the walls are literally wet in the morning. A humidifier that does not have an auto cut-off will lead to mould problems and can actually cause health problems associated with breathing in too much moisture. The ones with a cut-off are expensive...but worth it for regular, long-term use. The bargain Goodsphere does a great job for the money...I *think* I paid about 300dhs with a free bottle of essence thrown in. The essences are around 90-100dhs each, but they last months.

I think the Goodsphere made a massive difference for our little ones. It certainly made the villa air feel 'cleaner'...and the MUCK in the bottom of the water bowl every day - YUCK! I used the lavender & tea tree essence for the baby's room. :)

Thanks again shamat, and chants. Keeping in mind that we're in Aus, so he's been at school for almost 9 months now, he does know lots of children. We spend time outside of school with four other families from his class...three of those children he gets on really well with when we're away from school, but I don't think he considers them good mates [u'>at[/u'> school. The other little girl really annoys my son, so I'm trying to catch up with her lovely Mum while the kids are at school. :D Almost every afternoon as we head for the car, lots of children who are not in his class call out to him and often run over for a chat. He's always happy to see them (sometimes he's a little embarrassed to be with Mum...lol) and chats away about important 6yr old business. I will talk to his wonderful teacher when she gets back on Tuesday. Even my Mum commented on my gorgeous boy's relatively 'bad' behaviour today so I'll be interested to see what his teacher thinks might be going on. Maybe it was just bad timing with the supply teacher...maybe her appearance in the equation brought a few things to a head for him. I'll see how he goes this week. Thanks again for your advice girls. :)

There are a million things, but one I hadn't considered is that Showtime and Etisalat need quite some time allowed to finalise bills etc. Showtime weren't too bad (a week from memory) but (useless) Etisalat needed almost two weeks...although I've no doubt that depends on who you speak to at the time. ;) If you are vacating a rented villa or apartment, maybe see if you can move into temp accommodation for at least a few days before you are leaving the country. Get everything sorted with the Landlord and any money owed to you IN YOUR HANDS before you hand keys back etc.

There are lots of duplex-style, single storey villas in Mirdif. If you drive around, the letting agents numbers will be on the gate...9 times out of ten they are open and the agent tells you just to walk through! Most of the single story ones we looked at are on the "MCC side" of Algeria St, rather than on the "Uptown side". Tonnes to the left of 15St (Pink Mall end of 15th, not near Uptown primary) and to the right of 83St (Westzone st??). edited by Green-ish on 13/10/2011

He's not too old to accompany you into the ladies. Take him with you until such time you feel comfortable sending him in to the gents on his own. No way should he be going in there on his own at 6. Agree completely. My son is 6 and still comes with me into the ladies. No need for any discussion or fuss about it...that's just what happens when he's with Mum. It doesn't bother him at all. Most malls have the separate 'baby change' areas with a toilet so we go in there (I have the 4 & 2 yr olds with me too).

So you get the best advice for your dog, what breed and energy level is it? A little Jack Russell ball of energy will have very different exercise needs to a similar sized daschund. ;) Flat faced (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs will be different again... Heat stroke is a real risk, especially for brachycephalic dogs. A man used to walk his boxer past my villa at the exact same time every day for almost two years, and for a long time before we moved in I'm told. One day he walked past without the dog. His dog had just dropped dead the day before...a very, very hot summer evening (7pm-ish, almost the worst time for dogs). :( If you walk early in the morning or much later at night during the hot months (lowest humidity) and you understand the needs of your particular dog, all will be well. :D

Thanks so much AdviceSeeker and shamat! :) shamat...normally I would never let him have a day off, but he has been really distressed and this is a long weekend anyway. I won't be letting on at all that his 'day off' is because he's been upset. We'll just carry on, business as usual. I'm hoping that after the long weekend and usual teacher returning, he almost won't be aware he's missed a day at school. I've been trying to talk to him about it. Even did the old 'kick a ball around the garden' so he'd relax and open up. :) About the same time that all of this started, he began talking a lot about his old buddies in his Dubai class. That's 16 months now since that school year finished with them...a long time in his little life, but he sometimes talks about them like he genuinely really misses them. I asked who his 'best mate' is here and he said "no-one". I asked who he plays with and he said, "I kinda play with everyone and no-one" and he seemed sad. :( One thing I've really noticed is that in Dubai he was almost king of the kids. ;) He's an Aussie so a lot more outgoing/forward than many of the other children in his very multicultural class over there. He's physically a big kid so he also towered over almost all of them. It seemed in Dubai that everyone wanted to be his mate. :D Here, he's like almost every other kid; he doesn't stand out any more because they are all big, friendly, social, outgoing Aussie kids. I'm wondering if he wonders why other kids don't flock to him like they did in Dubai. One thing I know he does not enjoy at school is sport. He's bright and social, but a he's no gifted athlete. ;) Sports Day was awful for him - dead last in the race they were all made to run; dropped every ball thrown to him; dawdled around the courses because he's just not competitive... There are two very athletic boys in his class so Aussie culture almost dictates that they are the popular ones. There was one kid from another class that he was having a lot of trouble with in the playground. Real short-man-syndrome little bully. The teachers were onto it though and my son tells me that kid is not hassling him any more. OK...rambling essay over. ;) If it is about more just than the useless relief teacher, I know his regular teacher will help us sort it all out. Any further advice warmly welcomed though. :) xxx

Happy ending on this one - after holiday to visit family and hubby realising DS' cousins are not circumcised, we have put the subject to rest and my little darling came back intact :) This was never a religious matter for us; rather hubby's opinion for that DS should have it done because he'd had it done some 40 years ago when this was routine procedure on all newborns for 'hygiene' reasons. ... Excellent twin_butterfly...I'm thrilled you were able to come to a mutual decision. It was your concern that your husband had made this decision, not both of you, that worried me. My husband also felt the same way and I spent many hours showing him evidence that there is no medical indication for a circumcision in a normal, healthy child. He tried the 'odd one out' argument until I showed evidence that (in our home area), the circumcised child is more likely to be the odd one out...not that "odd one out" actually matters to me. I want our children to grow up celebrating people's differences! Can I suggest you be prepared for some 'repercussions'? My son had a few UTI's when he was little. He also got the odd thrush infection with antibiotics. I was always getting "the look" from my husband and a lecture about how we just should have lopped it off. *roll eyes* We now know that our son has a congenital kidney condition that contributed the infections. Nothing to do with his external physical appearance. So, be ready for the inevitable attitude, should your precious little man ever have any issues in that general area. :)

Technically there is nothing wrong with Dubai water, it just tastes horrible! I cook with it, but can't drink the tea made with tap water. Again, 'technically' you are right that when it leaves the plant it probably is ok to drink. Those of you who do drink with it, cook in it etc...do you regularly check or clean your storage tank? Do you know the state of the pipes in your villa/area? Having seen what I saw, I could never in a bazillion years drink it... just wondering how you're so confident that it's safe?
