Unless I'm misreading them, aren't WM and Dentro saying that the 'modest dress code' actually applies all year round? Not just for the holy month of Ramadan? To be honest, if you really have to ask about what's appropriate dress during Ramadan, then you may not be dressing appropriately every other day of the year. :)

44,000 I noticed that there are quite a few words I have recently started using since moving to Dubai, rancid comes to mind while looking at the meat selection in Spinneys and the word trollop often pops into my mind whilst out for the evening. LOL!!! Mine was only 29700...would like to know what it was before I stayed home wiping poo-ey bottoms for six years!

From our experience, it all depends on the person behind the desk/computer on the day. My husband once resigned (2006) and then was made redundant (2010) and neither time was our account frozen. We still have some debt in Dubai which we continue to pay from here and our bank account is still 'active' even though we left there almost a year ago. Regardless, I agree with the advice to get all of your cash out as soon as you can, just in case.

I used to feel this way every summer! The general slump was always worst soon after returning from a holiday somewhere cooler. :) I'm convinced that regardless of activity level, sleep, exercise etc, the indoors-all-day-every-day throughout the summer simply does your head in. Take a deep breath, find some like minded friends to have a laugh with and tough it out until things cool down...in October. ;) Really though, I hope you are 'ok'.

My mums favourite expression was "if God wanted you to have holes in your ears you would have been born with them". I had to wait till I was 15.... Lol...that's what my Dad always said. He made a deal with me and said he'd never pay for it so I had to wait until I had finished school and could pay for it myself. I was almost 17 when I had mine done. If my daughters want theirs done, they can when they are old enough to make an informed decision.

I have used my Ergo for three children and it's still going strong. I've just passed it on to a friend to use for her new bub. The Ergo is worth it's weight in gold! (Be careful...I think I read on here recently that someone in Dubai is selling dogdy copies that may not be safe)

Isn't it really 'dangerous' for tortoises to come indoors (to AC)? Aren't they highly susceptible to respiratory illness which could be brought on by the sudden temp changes? A friend and I took her rescued tort to an experienced tortoise owner for re-homing. This woman was mortified that my friend had been letting the tortoise inside during the summer. She said all they need is shade (she used an upturned half of a large dog crate) and somewhere to dig so they can regulate their own temp.

I agree...spay her now, before the possible pregnancy is any further advanced. Essentially, these kittens will just be another litter of mix breeds in an environment where there are already 1000's too many without homes. If you have friends waiting to take them (which sounds a little like the litter was planned), then those same friends would happily take on a kitten who's already out there looking for a home. The pregnancy may have been a 'mistake', but it's now your responsibility to put it right. Don't add to the cat population problem.

If it gives you a frame of reference, we had a Volvo V70 (estate)...touted as an "enormous family car' in Europe and UK but it does not fit three car seats across the back. We JUST squeezed two car seats and the (expensive) narrow, Volvo booster across the back seat. If you can afford it, go a seven seater. Much more room and much more flexibility.

She has effectively abandoned her animals - you can report her for that and there is a fine involved. What pet owner does that. I'd be calling her on those number - if they work - and tell her she needs to make alternative arrangements as you have to go away. Please be very careful about involving the Municipality.......yes, the owner might be penalised but if the dogs are deemed abandoned then they will come under the auspices of DM.........and that rarely ends happily. K9 has a new arrangement with DM...DM has come massive steps forward in making sure healthy dogs are re-homed. :)

I absolutely agree with the others...appalling, irresponsible behaviour on her part. If you can, contact the ex-husband and tell him he has 24 hours to sort it or you'll call DM. NOT your responsibility and you do not deserve the stress. If they end up at DM, let K9 know that's where they are and they'll be snapped up into a loving, responsible home in no time.

It's probably best to talk to your vet and to a good relocation company in Dubai about your pet's special needs. This site is Australian, but very, very useful and the people who contribute on the forum are incredibly helpful. You might find all you need here... http://forum.backyardpoultry.com/ There are a few produce places around where you could find the right feed...head out of town towards Al Awir or Al Ain and just about all of the small villages have a produce store. Can't say how difficult the language barrier might be though!

...It's too much of a risk with children - my aunt had a rescue dog, had the most wonderful loving nature, would but it's head on your lap and was so cuddly - if you were a girl / woman but would snap and crowl at any man / boy - even bit the posty on the bum. Rescue dogs are fine if you have no children / will have no children over but how can anyone take the risk of having a dog that they do not the history of? Am not advocating getting a dog from a pet shop here am talking about a dog from a breader they know, who knows the true history and parentage of that dog for a couple of generations back. There are far too many reports in papers of toddler having half their faces ripped off by the family pooch to take these sorts of risks..... Just my opinion and experience and i appreciate that a lot of rescue dogs can be fine but their is more of a chance (because of their experiences) that they can "turn". Here's the thing Princess, every single dog, cat, horse on the planet is a potential risk to every single human being (adult or child) on the planet. They are animals with their own minds and their own sets of reactions to situations. It is simply a ridiculous statement to generalise that 'rescue dogs' are "too much of a risk with children." Safety for both animal and child comes in teaching and expecting respect and boundaries to both the animal and every person who has dealing with it. Do you really, honestly believe all of those child-mauled-by-family-pet stories are about dogs from shelters? Your case study is on just one dog. My pet bird was aggressive towards all women (yep, including me once she fell in love with a certain bloke I knew). A dog I once had from a pup disliked most men. I knew both of their relatively pampered, non-traumatic histories. Your aunt's experience probably had nothing to do with the dog being from a shelter.

it is the municipality tax on yoru dewa bill? Yes...5% of your rent, paid monthly (IF your LL has registered the property with RERA) We've paid it in properties where the contract wasn't registered with DEWA. As edna says, it seems it's simply pot luck if you're on the inefficient side of the fence or the efficient side! Oh my yes, it is inefficient! But the property (and contract) have to be registered with RERA (not DEWA ;) ) in order to attract the attention of the housing tax powers that be. Our Emirati LL collected our rent direct from us and never had the property on the books with RERA, so no housing fee. LOL...he used it as one of the selling points when we signed up. (Best villa and nicest LL we had there. :) )

Scribs, I've had fibroadenomas (three) for years...diagnosed a good 20-something years ago. I most certainly had considerable pain with one of them each month, though I can't remember when in my cycle it bothered me. Now I don't even know they are there. They've reduced in size over the years and I'll probably never bother to do anything about them. I'm not a fan of any surgery unless really necessary. :) ETA - all of those years ago I had a needle biopsy in the GP's office and the ultrasound a few days later. The one that gave me trouble was "quite large" but the GP assured me it was safe to leave it alone and take a few panadol when it bothered me. edited by Green-ish on 13/07/2011

With apologies for being repetitive, please think carefully about a puppy and an apartment. Even experienced dog owners could have some considerable trouble raising a healthy, well-adjusted pup in an apartment. It's just going to be sheer hard work. If you're genuinely up for that (maybe foster a pup for a while to be sure??) then the important thing is finding the [u'>right dog[/u'> for you...not the right breed. Good luck with your decision. ETA - Sorry...I know you didn't ask for opinions. This is just such a MASSIVE decision. If you are determined to have a purebred dog, please also be aware that it is illegal to breed and sell dogs in the UAE unless by a registered and trading pet store. 'Backyard breeders' are the worst breeders there are. You will have zero health (future BILLS) guarantees on a pup sourced within the UAE. Perhaps leave it until one or both of you holiday overseas and source a pup from an ethical breeder there. Get to know the pup in a dog-friendly environment then bring it back with you. You can start researching ethical breeders now. It may take some time, but will be worth the wait. (I keep quoting one EW member who searched the globe for her chosen breed, and finally found the right pup...TWO YEARS after her search started. :) ) edited by Green-ish on 13/07/2011

Oh, I couldn't disagree more! I used to do almost all of my Christmas and birthday shopping in the DCC store. They had the greatest range of toys for my little ones and nieces and nephews. Granted the oldest kids I was shopping for were under 13, but everyone was always very happy. Really wouldn't advise getting a dog for a child from a rescue organisation or a rehomed dog as you have no idea of the history or how the dog has been trreated and wouldn't want to take the risk with a child. Rescue and re-homed dogs go successfully into new homes with children every day, all over the world. It is a far smarter decision, rather than buying a badly/unethically bred pup. My suggestion would be...don't get any pup/dog until you are 100% sure you are ready for the committment. Keep in mind the very expensive vet costs in Dubai, very expensive kennel fees for holiday periods, high cost of reloacting a pet should you ever need to move overseas. Can you commit 10+ years to a dog? Have you had a dog before? Have you raised a pup before? (WHOLE new ballgame if you've only had adult dogs or not had a pup AND a child) Do you have a friend with a dog? Maybe borrow it for a fortnight and see how a dog really fits into your lifestyle? Or, contact any one of the rescue organisations and see if you can arrange a foster dog? That way you can safely 'try before you buy'. Lordie knows K9 etc would be VERY appreciative of a foster home at this time of year. Whatever you decide, really think it through and find the right animal for you (not the right breed, the right individual dog). Good luck!

Goodness me. Cecile is like any business in that you will have people who are extremely happy with her and those who are not. I have some friends who have seen Cecile and they absolutely love her. She has done wonders for their sleep. In fixing their sleep the babies are so much happier and so are the mothers! People can have their strong opinions about Cecile but when someone just goes off attacking the woman at every chance then I think that is uncalled for. Yes, give your opinion but to just continuously attack the woman is just not right. And the fact that she IS successfully helping hundreds of mothers and babies, in my opinion, speaks volumes about her. I agree. It is obvious that opinion towards her is polarised, you love her fine. You hate well, fine too. But no need to bash the woman at every opportunity particularly when the thread doesn't even call for it. All the OP wanted was to hear from people who have used Cecile's sleep training advice and how successful/unsuccessful it was. As for me, I used Cecile over a period of 3 years for my two girls. Due to Ceci's advice I managed to exclusively BF my first for two years and exclusively pump for DD2 for 7 months and counting. I don't know what advice she's told D.Babe's friend, but with me Ceci was the biggest BF support for me. I do know she supports introducing solids by six months max, doesn't care how whether it's BLW or spoonfeedng, but she does believe that the 6 month to 18 month window is an important age to help babies acquire their feeding skills. This infamous CIO expert was the one who actually advised me against sleeptraining my DD1 at 2.5 years because she felt with all that was going on, it wasn't the right solution for us. DD1 still wakes up a lot at night and even co sleeps with us a few times a week. I know I sound like a broken record now, but what that woman did to our family was invaluable. She was probably the one who kept me from having a nervous breakdown when things were at their worst with DD2. She even insisted on visiting us every week for months until she was 100% certain that both myself and DD2 (who was premature and has a feeding aversion) was all right, even after our package with her expired. Free. She refused to charge me although she was forgoing meeting with paying clients because she was concerned about me and the baby. Now that is what is truly called a labour of love. I will only ever have good things to say about ceci lemondrops, this is the Cecile I met! There are bits and pieces about her methods that don't ring true for me, but surely that's true of just about any health professional we come across. With genuine apologies to designbabe for doubting her word (second hand as it is)...I maintain that IF this is an accurate portrayal of the advice Cecile gave a new Mum, then I am shocked/horrified because I simply cannot imagine her being so utterly wrong.

Dubaicat replied : He was only 7 or 8 months at the time . Does sleep training affect a successfull breastfeeding as the baby is left couple a hours without any feed ? Two of my babies slept through the night (12+ hours) from 10 and 12 weeks, both exclusively breastfed and both without anything in particular that I did. The other slept through the night from 17 weeks, four days after we instigated a version of 'sleep training'. If the baby goes to bed comfortable, well-fed, dry and relaxed, there is no need to feed them every couple of hours. From my understanding, milk is for hunger and thirst. I am 34 , and I still wake up several time a night to drink water, specially with the summer heat, and AC. I've just come back to this and not read any further...can see where it might be going though. Of course milk is for hunger and thirst. Talk about stating the bleeding obvious. Nobody has suggested otherwise. All I said is that there is no "NEED" to wake very couple of hours (all other factors taken into consideration.). My girls slept 12-14 hours from a very young age. That's just the way they were.

Di, I'm genuinely sorry that I made you feel you needed to explain yourself. As much as the next woman, I'm aware of the news stories and 'talk' about how these things can go when it's a woman accusing a man. That said, I think it's a great shame that people are not always held accountable for their actions just because of their nationality. Who knows, he may not even be the nationality you think he is. For complete transparency, I'm not in Dubai anymore...but if I was I would take it further. I hope the complaints you have made to the insurance mob and the service station operators do make a difference.
