Dubaicat replied : He was only 7 or 8 months at the time . Does sleep training affect a successfull breastfeeding as the baby is left couple a hours without any feed ? Two of my babies slept through the night (12+ hours) from 10 and 12 weeks, both exclusively breastfed and both without anything in particular that I did. The other slept through the night from 17 weeks, four days after we instigated a version of 'sleep training'. If the baby goes to bed comfortable, well-fed, dry and relaxed, there is no need to feed them every couple of hours.

If you suspect lawn grubs, you can try flooding the lawn which will make the grubs come to the surface. Try to do it morning or early evening when the birds are around...they'll feast on the grubs and help fix your problem. :)

I always had really good service from Champion Cleaners. Once used a cheaper recommendation from EW (can't remember the name of the company) and the lounges looked worse after the guy had finished. I refused to pay him and he just shrugged his shoulders and went on to the next job! Lol...if I see a name that rings a bell come up here, I'll let you know!

Good thinking subyfan...I had forgotten the same was true when we moved into the new DSO villa. The water tanks there were not correctly sealed so for months the tap water smelt and tasted of lime from the concrete tanks. I didn't even cook with the tap water until it started to smell 'right'.

Di...I'd go to the police/Al Ameen with what you know. This man has no right to access this information, certainly no right to discuss it publicly with another man, no right to harass you etc etc. In your complaint, the police will be made aware that he had access to your address etc and I'm sure they will make sure he won't have an opportunity to use this against you. Don't let him get away with this. It sounds like there is no good reason why he read your info so that suggests he's up to no good.

If I can find him again I will ask for ID and if he does not produce any I will call al Ameen immediately. ... I went to the police station alone a few times and never felt uncomfortable. I'd feel far more uncomfortable, in fact unsafe, ever going anywhere near that man on my own. Please don't approach him again. If you really want to find him, perhaps have a trusted male companion with you and be ready to call the police as soon as you see him. No need to approach this man again...let the police handle it.

I'm thinking zena is saying "shelter" where she means "kennel"??? The problem now is going to be that all of the kennels are probably full for the summer at this late stage. A short term foster home in Dubai or in Canada is probably the best option. Sorry to say it zena, but finding a permanent home at this time of year will be very tough. Have you tried Homely Petz? They may have someone on the books who'll take her for a few months...you'll have to cover all costs of course. Such a shame if you can't work this out. :(

I loved a lot about the city and the people in it. I really, really disliked a whole lot about it too. You're right GA. The love/hate arguements have been done to death and "meh".

I second Istanbul! Absolutely MARVELOUS place for SO many reasons and in SO many ways. I'll third that!! We had an AMAZING ten days there last year with children 4, 3 and 10months. Loved every single minute of it and could have stayed another month, even with the children who were so welcome everywhere! I also dream of a holiday there again without the little ones. Istanbul offers so very much for everyone. (Hmmmm...Tuscany was pretty fabulous too!)

I had my ford escape tyres done at the 4x4 service centre and they were about 200 each - i just went for the cheapest option though, whatever that was. :) call them and ask hey? i've now stopped going and go to AAA in Umm Ramool instead, they may well be able to do you a good dea too. edited by denshort on 29/06/2011 it may seem like a good deal. But with the temperatures here and if its not a good quality tyre like a Michelin, Bridgestone, Good year and the likes then you are risking your life. Tyres are really important and with the heat here it can burst easy. I would never compromise on tyres. FYI - My colleague changed his Ford Escape tyres at the garage just before the service centre of Ford for AED 3100 for all four tyres. Agreed!! Cheap tyres are almost always unsafe tyres. A friend of mine got a 'good deal' on cheap tyres and six weeks later one of them shredded itself at 110km/hr on SZR. Cheap tyres are often very poorly made, or worse, re-treads. They are dangerous. If you are paying anything less than 500dhs per tyre for a large car, unless it's a reputable brand name, I think you are taking a massive risk.

My DH and I are the ones who somehow end up in the carseat section of toys r us stopping the sales associate and showing a new parent how the carseat IS suppose to be put in the car. Yes I'm sure most of us understand that many people don't know what carseats are but ..... maybe I'm wrong on this but isn't there some part of people that knows that placing an infant on their lap while they are driving is dangerous? If that adult is wearing a seatbelt, then they certainly should!

tkoshy...the frustration and judgement comes about because every single day people see drivers who do know better still refusing to do the right thing. Do you not find comments like (paraphrasing), "I won't buckle my child in because he cries" just absolutely frustrating?? As I suggested below, I am well aware there are many people who can't afford car seats. It's simple really...the kids lives are valued so they should not be in the car. You are absolutely right in that education is the way forward. Lesley and all of the people supporting her are doing an amazing job!! I reckon the quickest education will come when the law is set in stone and the police start [u'>enforcing[/u'> it. Watch then just how quickly those who currently don't know any better suddenly do!

TwoKids...the watering in Dubai is very similar to your experience in Perth as both have pretty sandy soils. The easiest thing to do is (from my old post below), experiment and work out how long it takes to get the water 10-15cm down. Stick a stake down in the soil then water for a few minutes. Pull the stake out and measure how far down the water got according to how much of the stake is wet under soil level. We never watered more often than every second night, less in the winter. (does that make sense?? Giving lawn advice from Aus and it's late here. :D )

These people annoy me so much. Are they trying to use their child as an air bag??? Price should not be an issue when you think of your child's safety. If you can pay for high end cars, huge homes, designer clothes and watches. You can pay money on a carseat. 1 for an infant which is 0-12 months, 1 for the toddler 12 months to 4 years and the booster seat. Price should be an issue...BEFORE they have the children. Is it not our responsibility BEFORE we decide to have children to ensure that we will have the financial means to give them the necessities of life? Of course, the alternative for these numpties is that if they genuinely cannot afford carseats, THE CHILD DOES NOT GO IN THE CAR. It's not freakin' rocket science is it? Deep breath....hold....deep breath.....

You are absolutely right...most breeders don't really care. Some pretend to care by asking a few questions before parting with a pup, but most just want the cash. That's the disgrace of the whole industry. Few and very far between, there are decent breeders out there. An EW member posted some time ago that she longed for a particular breed and it took her some years and an international search before she found a breeder with a decent set of ethics. Not everyone is doing it for the money. Of course the vast majority are, some deluding themselves that they do it because they 'love' the breed and want people to have 'quality' pups. It's those people that I wish would stop breeding. As you say, being prepared to part with a lot of money does not mean a person gives a guarantee of a good home for a pup. I wonder what the stats would be on the number of europuppy (and similar businesses or breeders) pups that go on to live a life as backyard breeding stock so the owner can recoup their money, and then some? Even one litter that is not produced for the right reasons is one litter too many. Then of course I could stay on my soapbox about people who don't spay or neuter their pets (dog, cat, horse, cavy, hamster, purebred, crossbred.....) who also contribute to overcrowded shelters and horrifying euthanasia stats... You've all heard enough from me on this one. :D edited by Green-ish on 29/06/2011

For those on the Palm, either in a villa or apartment, do you own or rent? edited by Crystil on 27/06/2011 I own my signature villa, and i have to pay all my own bills (up to 8000dhms each summer month) company pays nothing.... Also, we have checked with DEWA both in person at their office, over the phone, etc... and all of them say that what we pay is "normal" i also have asked all my neighbors here on the Palm, and they too pay upwards of 8000 per summer month! edited by tdale on 28/06/2011 "Normal" for these villas perhaps, but not [u'>normal[/u'> surely?! I've never been in a Palm villa...are they massive? Enormous areas to cool? massive areas of glass letting the heat in? Private pools needing constant top ups?? I just can't imagine why the bills are so high. Are they on district cooling? and does that really make such a massive difference? Why is it that big villas in other developments pay up to 2K and you guys are paying 8K? Yikes tdale, I think I'd insist on more than "That's normal maaaaaaam," from DEWA.

Europuppy is an appalling disgrace of a business!!! As is any other business/breeder that will sell live animals over the phone/internet without a care in the world as to where the animals will end up. They will take the cash from anyone who'll pay up. DISGRACEFUL. Anyone who buys from them is encouraging their complete lack of ethics and financing the next litter of unethically bred pups. DISGRACEFUL. Krebik23...if you have your heart set on a Pug, PLEASE do your research carefully. I know the pug has become a very popular breed in recent years, but this is a breed that is almost THE case in point of bad breeding. Sweet, gentle and loyal they may be...but they are also well known for major congential breathing problems and they have been bred to such appalling physical characteristics that most pups are delivered by c-section. Does that not disgust animal lovers...that a breed exists that cannot even give birth naturally?? All of that said, if you still want a Pug, please find an ethical breeder (if such a thing exists). To know if you've found the right breeder: -they will want to know all sorts of things about you -they will insist on meeting you and will be very hesitant in selling a pup soon destined for a long overseas flight -they will want the animal returned to them if you ever find yourself unable to care for it -they will breed a litter rarely, only when they have homes already secured and when they can unite a pair of dogs that will improve the breed I hope you get my drift. Basically, anyone who will sell you a dog and not make you really work for it, SHOULD NOT BE BREEDING! Oh madolecow, you've just bought into their self promotion. Europuppy is a disgrace.

If you're looking for a brand recommendation, I think you can't go past the Ergo. I have occasionally been carrying one child and been able to switch to the other one without having to adjust the carrier. It's amazingly comfortable, all of the wieght is taken by your hips so you don't really even feel the weight of the child. I have carried a 20kg toddler for hours and not been uncomfortable...and I'm NOT fit and strong. ;) My Ergo has survived three children and has now been passed onto a friend to use for hers. It's indestructable. :D I believe the parent company now ships internationally. http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/ ETA - you can use it on your front, back or hip and there's an infant insert available for newborns. edited by Green-ish on 28/06/2011

...What I dislike is...... where are you from, what are you doing here, what kind of package are you on, do you ahve a good housing allowance, school included in that and what about DEWA. Ya...tired of those questions and again, having lived overseas for 10 years it seems as though Dubai is the worst for the nosey questions! Is this not a sign of the times though? Packages seem to be less generous than they have ever been (gross generalisation there, I know) so maybe people really want/need to know that the deal they got is 'fair'?? When we first got there the only conversation starters were, "Where are you from? Who does your husband work for? Where do you live?" (followed by looks of disdain when we answered "Mirdif" :D ) That's only 6 years ago and the tail end of the 'big' salary packages with all of the extras so it seemed to be assumed that all of those things you mention were included.

Don't discount "old" Suzy. We lived in three villas in Dubai and, while not a massive case study, the "old" one was FAR superior to the two brand new ones. Better build, more space and all of the construction hitches already sorted out. We did have a great LL though and if the particular Nakheel villas mentioned are indeed still Nakheel, not the world's best LL at the moment!

Maybe the agent who sold the house has connections to find you a new one in the same area? I'd also sort a good deal with the LL now rather than settle in and have to move again in a year. A year passes TOO quickly. In Aus, you can also claim money for the inconvenience of having to move again. Maybe try that on too so you can have a nice weekend away to recover from all of the moving stress! :D

wuffles, I have never met you, but I've read your posts for some time and found what you've said to be thoughtful and helpful, so I was shocked to find that you were the OP on this thread. Do not feel bad about this. You did absolutely the right thing. Through no fault of yours, or any other woman's, this guy is not a suitable man to be going into women's homes to do maintenance stuff. He comes with a serious health warning and you had to do what you did. If you had said nothing, you would have put a lot of other women at risk. Imagine if someone had done that to you in Australia! Would you have been worried about the consequences for him there? No! I'm guessing that you would have been completely indignent and outraged at his audacity! Just because this guy may seem to be disadvantaged by his circumstances, that is NOT a justification for his behaviour. Thanks I am feeling more indignant now I must admit. What got me was as soon as I felt uncomfortable I rang BH and he still didn't stop when it was obvious I had reported him-then the security guard came and while he went to talk to his co-worker on the roof he continued to misbehave ([b'>he must have been momumentally thick skinned [/b'>or sure of his word being believed against a woman's)-wasn't impressed with the guard either for leaving me there clearly distressed to go talk to the other guy who hadn't done anything......but that is another story....apparently the security guard needed permission to enter my apartment from the landlord-helpful-not "monumentally thick skinned..." or just monumentally thick?? What a tool! Hope you're feeling ok today.
