I've read some great autobiographies and biographies this year. Top of the list is the Metallica bio, also really enjoyed Steven Tyler and Keith Richards autobios. The Bin Ladens was fantastic and I learnt a lot about Saudi. Ozzy Osbornes is good too.

At the moment I am just into what I call 'light reading'. Have been reading a lot of Maureen Lee, Anne Baker and Helen Forrester whose books are about life in Liverpool, mainly during the war. Some of them give a fascinating insight as to what life was really like then, and as I come from the Wirral, I know all the places that are being written about. I have trouble putting them down once I start reading one. Got about 20 if anyone wants to borrow. Also recently read some of Maeve Binchy, equally as good. Will now look into C.J.'s recommendation of Lesley Pearse. Two autobiographies I enjoyed were by Kim Woodburn and Julie Goodyear. I would love too, from Chester and love those types of books. :-) I have just read Paul O'Grady's and Alan Carrs autobiogs and they were hilarious, i would lend them to you however i have a kindle now If you want a laugh read the Stephanie Plum ones by Janet Evanovich they are hilarious!

I have been searching for a job in Dubai for the past 7 weeks - it is really frustrating not to get any feedback when you send your CV out. I rely on Linkedin, i check the daily added jobs, i do the same with Bayt.com, i even went and attended few of their morning come-back to work coffees @ Marina Mall. Another thing that helps is registering job alerts with certain companies that interests you, you will be notified whenever an opening is posted. I guess the key here is to mass-send your CV and keep your fingers crossed :) Good Luck :))) Hello recruiters will not give feedback on Cv's as they receive hundreds daily Try registering your details to their websites and if a suitable role comes in then they will contact you. They work on several roles daily and will only contact people who have what the client wants ( most work on the client side) www.bacme.com has a site as does Kershaw Leonard etc Good Luck!

I understood that you need a bike licence for any type of motorbike, regardless of the cc. I took my motorbike licence and got a 250cc for that kind of commute, we now live inAR and use it for popping out to the shops. It is very useful so if it saves you some hassle, may be worth looking at that route. You are right as i went through this with my ex and you have to have it on your Dubai licence. If you look on the back it will say light vehicle which means a car not like in the UK you need the motorbike one to be on there

Afternoon ladies I haves searched on here but can't quite find the right info so hence posting here. My LL has told me that he wants to sell which is fine so upon renewing my contract it was specifically stated that it would be non renewable. Since then I have had to replace 2 water heaters and repair fridge/ freezer & cooker, all of which if I am correct the LL has to pay for. But surprise, surprise he's not having any of it. So, and this is where I need your help. He is now wanting to show perspective tennants around via agents and I have told them that he can not show anyone around until I get my money back for the repairs. Does this sound logically to you & do you think I am doing the right thing? I agree with you

Hello ladies, I have an all important interview coming up and I am thinking of buying some new clothes for it. I am a size 16 and am looking forward to buying a nice suit and some other formals. Can anyone suggest where in Dubai I can find some nice pieces for my size? Any suggestions on what I should wear? TIA edited by Desi girl on 22/11/2012 I was pleasantly surprised to find nice separates (pencil skirt, suit jackets, blouses and trousers) at Banana Republic. I am a US size 8, and was pleasantly surprised, because from memory, they didn't always seem to fit curvy women as well as they seem to now. I'm kind of tall, too, (175 cm) and really liked their length--didn't need to get anything tailored. They have nice shirts, too--but if you have a big deviation between chest and waist, they don't work. Thank goodness for Thomas Pink stretch! M&S but go to Dubai Mall or Festival City as the selection is bigger They do separates too

I have a big breast size with a smaller waist size so to fit properly, I usually have to buy a size bigger that would fit the top well. Also, my tummy's not exactly flat right now, anything that can help make it look flatter? :) Spanx :-)

I'm torn. I got a hat so I don't have to worry about my hair--this weather won't do it any favors. Does anyone who has been to this venue know 1) how far the walk is once a taxi drops you off, 2) if the golden circle standing area is grass or concrete? I got the cutest pumps, but I am too chicken to wear them. I can only imagine pain, pain, pain. All grass and the taxi can drop you outside and the walk is 5 mins

I'd like to work ideally but work 3-4 days a week currently in the UK and am not sure if this will be achievable in Dubai. For the first few months, I wouldn't work to give us some time to settle down. We would both need a car I think. We have sufficient capital - there are no worries on that front. We already pay for rent and schooling in the UK (the school fees we pay now are comparable to those in Dubai but the rent is less). We live quite frugally in the UK apart from the school fees and nice holidays. 3-4 day working week here is difficult however it all depends on the role and the employer. There are part time roles on this website however be prepared to be paid less for these roles. Most roles are full time 9-6 or 8.30-5.30 If you live frugally, have savings then i think you will have a great quality of life here

I wont lie yes, we had some wonderful times together but i think this is it . I think Dubai has changed us too, i know about 4 couples who have divorced since being here,. Me too unfortunately however we all have to create our own happiness in life and as sad as it is some things are not meant to be. Happy and new memories ahead :-)

Everyone I know is reading this trilogy so I thought I'd have to see what the buzz is all about? :-) So ladies: love it, like it or hate it? I would probably say after reading the first 2 parts and without getting into details about the toooo many intimate bits, it's an okay read for me. Didn't love it cause I thought the story was told a million times before and didn't hate it cause it has deep feelings involved (don't wanna spill it out for ppl. who didn't read it yet) What did you think? Easy reads, last book is best. If you arent looking for a difficult read and something to wile away the hours by the pool or at the beach then yes

Dear me in a bit of a state today, I left my husband about 3 months ago, still both living in Dubai. But he still thinks were getting back together, and thinks the world of me still. I have a good job, got myself a little apartment, with my dog ( no kids) and had to make a better more happier life for myself. He cant accept it. Ive chosen to go down the divorce route now, ( we married in the UK) He is really struggling to come to terms with it all, I Just keep thinking if we get back together it will be the same, argueing day in day out, none stop insecuritys from his side, was always accusing me of seeing someone else etc. We grew apart, big time. now i feel more happier in myself, and starting to enjoy my life. He thinks that for the last year, that i have changed, because my dad passed away a year ago, ( which im dealing with really well ) and also because of my new job, how i can financially look after myself. Has anyone else been through this, im sure there are lots of women who has , and it going to get worse right. I went through a similar thing years ago however at the time i didnt know if i had done the right thing as being alone was scary. Looking back now i knew it would never work and i didnt want to give him false hope with regards to us getting back together. If you still have feelings for him and are unsure perhaps now you are living apart you could date him as you did in the beginning of your relationship. Personally speaking i think women leave as they are unhappy wheras men leave to go to someone else! ( please dont jump on me for saying that) Only you know your own mind and if you are sure that you want a divorce then be fair but firm and dont speak or communicate with him with anything other than the divorce. Women can get mixed signals from exes when they call etc and i believe men can too. You need to move on and so will he Good Luck

Rent and schooling is the most expensive thing here. Will you be working or as a SAHM. Personally i think it is doable however it all depends on what lifestyle you want to maintain. It isn't a huge salary by some ex pat standards however i would say alot of ex pats move here for a better salary and quality of life. Although our salaries are not taxed here it is an expensive place to live as you tend to be alot more sociable. Compared to say the UK, clothes food and alcohol are more expensive, petrol and eating out isn't. I moved here on a much larger package than i earnt at home however i work harder and have longer working hours Will you both need a car? I came with alot of savings as money is easily spent here I have friends who live on less ( with children) and some that live on more. It is difficult to advise as it depends how you live as a family. Salaries havent increased in the last few years and packages have remained the same although prices have increased. I would research school and property rental prices first then work from there Good Luck!

Just to remind us all how blessed we are. We all have our problems and issues, but being where we are we are much better off than most of our fellow human beings: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152275406280608&set=a.10151927858120608.881177.71778625607&type=1&theater Not intended to instigate a religious discussion, it's a good moment to reflect on how much we really have. I think it is relevant and interesting in a compare and contrast sort of way, if people are open minded enough to see from different perspectives that is....especially in the context of many saying that it is offensive because of cultural religious reasons etc....anyway, I'm not arguing, just making an observation and saying and trying to make sense of it. But Malaysia is a mixed society; And i mean that from a national perspective not of expats. I quite frankly think you are all making a mountain out of a mole hill. The UAE is extremely tolerant of the way people dress and I don't really think they mind in the least if you are wearing headscalf, shorts, tank top etc. edited by derien on 20/11/2012 I disagree with you; every time and i mean every time i have gone shopping with any of my local female friends they make very disparaging comments about the lack of clothes of women. We must move in different circles. My local friends couldn't care less. Neither could mine either

You'll be glad to know I decided to drive to DIFC and as per Jules suggestion took the 44 then past Dubai Mall, over the E11, stopping a couple of times when arriving in DIFC to locate my building with only the odd honk from the impatient taxi drivers beind me, located a parking spot and all with 20 mins to spare. Job interview went well and the people interviewing were very friendly so fingers crossed :) Good luck!

I personally am not offended by skimpy clothing. However, after being a Muslim for many years, I wonder why women want to show so much of their private parts when I see them dressed like that. have to say i've never actually seen anyone showing their "private parts" :\: :D I have seen a couple of inappropriately dressed people here ( see through attire on one girl with no bra and a thong) however shorts dont bother me at all If someone is that bothered they can look away. I know it isnt respectful however there are alot of disrespectful people here and not just lack of clothes

I don't think any amount of fires will stop people from dropping butts from balconies. I think the only way you can really feel somewhat safe is to live on the first floor. Living in a building, you are only as safe as the most careless tenant is... I agree completely. The neighbour above me who used to chuck them over recevied a gift of an ashtray from me. That and being threatened with the police seemed to do the trick

Am livid... Found a cigarette butt on our balcony, must have been dropped from one of the floors above us.. a tower with 30 floors... What's it going to take for people to stop doing such stupid things? Do people need to die before others wake up?? Sorry for the rant but just reeling from the shocking news of the Tamweel fire and now the stark realisation of what dangers lurk in a high rise due to people's stupidity/ irresponsibility! I used to get them every day, burnt washing, burnt cushions, securiity went to see the culprit who denied it of course ( however i witnessed him doing it) and threatened him with the police, it has now stopped
