I have friends who work in this industry, however they have been doing it for years. work with the same comapany and make all their money on rentals. They work very long hours and Saturday's ,their companies have a good reputation, pay them a basic salary, medical, flight and sponsor them Personally speaking i would not work for a company that doesnt give me a basic however everyone is different and has different opinions of this. It is a difficult question to answer as we hear of so many horror stories. Good luck!

No it's not ok for the customer to have called names. I can understand the complete lack of service was very frustrating and being made to wait while they were deep in kindergarten type conversation led this person to vent her anger was understandable but her choice of words could have been better. Off to jabal Ali today no doubt to be fobbed off once again but I have to go to our bank there so I suppose it won't be a comete waste of time. sorry but no, in my book it's NOT understandable to shout at and insult staff, however aggrieved you may feel.... :\: at some of the comments on this thread... I worked in a well known UK bank and was abused on a daily basis by frustrated angry customers, we were not allowed to shout back unless they swore and if they did we told them we would have them escorted off the premises if they continued this way. We all get frustrated here however manners cost nothing and you get far further by being polite. I agree with the above poster however the member of staff should not of replied in the way that she did. Why people cannot be nice to people i do not understand. I have never encountered so much rudeness and impatience in people, it is as if they are the most important people in the world

I bought a 4 pan poacher from M&S it wasnt expensive and really easy to use that sounds like my style. A device. I don't have a microwave; is it designed for a saucepan? It is like a frying pan that has 4 parts ( which are the poachers) it goes on the stove stop. Easy to clean aswell as it comes apart

There was a similar one after the recent Enrique Iglesias concert, and I'm sure I read that he only showed his face for a few minutes. This one might be different, but I would lower your expectations just in case. I was just about to write the same thing!

This got me thinking..... What age would you consider exceptable for a babysitter? My DD is a very sensible mature 13 year old but there is no way I would allow her to babysit for her younger brother who is much older than 3, never mind a stranger. Wouldn't even leave the 13 year old alone in the house by herself for more than a very quick trip to the shop. Am I being weird (weirder than normal)? My Sister started leaving her children with the eldest Son when he was 17 and they were 5. I used to babysit but it wasn't for small kids and i was 16 ( they knew me well and were in bed before Mum and Dad went out) plus pubs etc closed early in those days. I would certainly never leave my child with a teenage stranger

OK I've seen holes in the ground in particular shisha cafes in Abu Dhabi, service stations and parts of Karama. I've even done a wii in Ravis. But I work in a shiny office building in media city! And can't they lift up the seat and stand on the actual rim rather than on the toilet seat???? Surely if there is a hole in the ground then by all means squat, but if there is a proper toilet why not use it properly? Seems pretty savage to me... I am horrified at the state of our ladies loos. Some people are just disgusting

We recently had the outlaws over. And FIL is on lots of different medication. Didn't want to worry MIL so said nothing and all was fine. She always puts his medication in those "Take for a week" tubs anyway. What if it wasn't 'all fine'?!! Surely she had a prescription and letter from the doctor with her? I still wouldnt risk anything from the banned list, i would not want to be detained until they sorted it out. Too scary for words!

Thanks Derien for understanding my post. Unfortunately I cannot start and finish work earlier as I am a teacher. I did want to know what people do generally in those situations, aside from getting a maid. I wouldn't need a maid otherwise so was wondering if there is an alternative rather than to hire a maid for 1-1.5 hrs per day. Doesn't appear to be as I had imagined. But thanks for the helpful and unhelpful comments. There is a website here called Assist.ae maybe they can advise you? edited by louisedvs on 18/11/2012

Thanks for the reply Louise, yeah I know we have to pay them before registration but wondered whether you can actually do it in the same place or if it has to be done in a different office prior to going to the registration office. I know in Dubai it is where you register. ( That probably doesnt help) Good Luck!

Does anyone know whether you can pay traffic fines when you go to register your car? We are off to Al Samha on Sheikh Zayed Road tonight as we live in Dubai and I went online to pay the fines like we have always done - and they now require you to register on the website which seems to be overly complicated as it isn't accepting the information, tried calling up and they don't seem sure how to make it work - so we need to pay the fines and can't do it online. I have been calling the Al Samha office to ask whether we can just pay there tonight but there is no answer - does anyone have any ideas? Thanks :) In Dubai when you register your car they make you pay any overdue fines prior to registration so i assume it would be the same across the Emirates.

and knowing the standards of building work in the ME, it's worrying. That is quite a statement Joyce. Sorry to say this, but for a new country, I would say that the standards are quite high. Really my BIL is a Construction Director and said the quality of the work here is not very good at all. My Brother who was an electrician looked at the work on one of the villas that i used to live in ( prestigious project) and said he was surprised that the place hadn't gone on fire due to the bad wiring.

Co-codamol contains coedine. Even with a prescription i wouldn't risk bringing it in Anyone remember the woman arrested for 5 tempazepam tablets and she had a prescription. It is such a grey area i wouldnt risk it. Now if prescribed here by a Dr you are covered. Sound advice louisedvs why take the chance.I understood that Coedine could not be brought in under any circumstances and when in desperate pain was prescribed Tramadol. My doctor advised me AGAINST bringing Coedine into the UAE with or without a prescription. To those giving advice that it is OK , how dreadful would you feel IF your advice proved wrong on that particular day. To OP I would not risk it. I was prescribed Tramadol after a back injury and had to show my ID card at the hospital which they said is so the police have a record that it was prescriped properly Yep - same when I picked up my Trammies. I would not risk bringing codeine either, the rules may make no sense (can't bring it in but can have it on prescription here), if there is an alternative then do use it. All it takes is one person at immigration to stop you and boom.... I would never ever risk it

As far as I'm aware it's fine as long as you bring you prescription with you from the doctors. My husband had strong painkillers that aren't allowed to pass unless you have a valid prescription. Of you're still worried I can only suggest cocodomol although its not as strong! :-( Co-codamol contains coedine. Hi KW, I live on The Pearl and wonder what kind of babysitting help you might need. I am somewhat new to this place and am frustrated that communication within The Pearl is a bit difficult:). Hope things are going well for you! It may be because any maid etc has to be sponsored by you. It is illegal to use a maid or babysitter etc in the UAE that isn't sponsored by your family and if found out the said person can be deported and you will be fined a very large amount. I assume the same laws apply in Qatar.

I would speak with the rent committee or search on here as there are lots of threads regarding this. I believe they cannot increase the rent for 2 years but can ask you to vacate if you are given 12 months notice however this has to be given in writing and i do not know at what point sorry. They can advise the legal way to do it

i.e. after we have lived in property a year and are renewing for the 2nd year, does he need to sell/move in after 2nd year or can he put the property back on the rental market? LL claims he needs to move in in 12 months time as he has nowhere to live. I do not believe him as he has lied to us in the past, tried to increase our rent for second year with 35% etc. I am just wondering if the tenant only has the right for 2 years in the same property (unless a new contract is negotiated). I hate moving and the thought of having to leave this house in 12 months makes me very irritated... Grrrr. I miss our old LL who was a pain in many ways but never tried to increase the rent more than he could, never tried to get us out on false pretenses and never argued about maintenance work that he was responsible for. My understanding is that he can give you 12 months notice in writing to leave RERA or the Rental peopel can advise, i also understand that they cannot increase the rent within 2 years unless the rent is lower than it should be and they can only increase by 5% If he gives you 12 months notice then he can do what he wants as it is property. I only have to give my UK tenant 6 months notice and what i do with it after the legal time limit given is my business not the tenants

Agree just buy a ready made one, I always get the plainest ready made cake I can find and then add some fresh cream and fresh fruit or dark choc flakes myself, that way less bother and it comes out like just home baked. I really hate those neon bright cakes that people are making everywhere, the colouring really looks toxic. That reminds me of the Calendar Girls where Julie Walters enters a shop bought Victoria Sponge at the WI fair and wins haha lol :D I'm busted! It is all about the warm spoon hehe

Hello! So I am moving to Dubai from South Africa with my son (4yrs). My husband is currently in Abu Dhabi but we will move to Dubai in Jan / Feb. I am feeling a little overwhelmed and need some advice on rentals / schools etc. Can anyone assist? There are plenty of posts on schools here you can use the search function, there is also lots of advice on the banners above regarding proprty, families etc Do you want a villa or an apartment, most people prefer to live close to the school their children attend. Arabian Ranches and The Springs are popular for families ( Villas) Good luck!

Educate yourselves. Great news, you come from first world countries which handed you the gift of literacy/numeracy, which was then converted into an employable skill, so either you went for a job, or married a literate man who got one. Most of the world is poor. They cannot read/write/add, they rely on 'unimportant' jobs to feed their families as they tick NONE of the skills boxes in even the most remedial jobs. Many jobs disappeared in the recession, unskilled workers need jobs like these. Don't be so naive about this world and its' mechanics! I agree and most of the so called educated/literate ones from Western countries came here and were paid a ridiculous over inflated salary for doing very little I would rather deal with the unskilled workers than most of the spoilt stuck up ex pat brats here. Thankfully the recession got rid of alot of them and will continue to do so

Having people take care of you creates jobs, feeds families, puts roofs over people's heads, sends children to school... Think of it like that and while you'd never want that person as a guest in your home (as it creates a job for you which you WON'T get paid for), they somehow contribute to the economy... :\: I hope you're joking Not at all. Most of the population here are in unskilled/task oriented jobs, the purpose of which is to make another person have to do less, if they stopped being lazy, if everyone 'got off their backside' tomorrow, 55% of the country would go home, destroying economies. On that beach, it's the low level unskilled sectors of society that are leaving all the mess. Really? I have watched numerous big 4 by 4's drive past the bins and lob their rubbish out of the window and miss the bin and dont get me started on cigarettes ends. I dont believe you can blame the low level unskilled for that and if that is the case go take a walk on JBR beach full of ex pats dumping water bottles and fag ends.
