Looked at this link http://www.dubaiairshow.aero/the-show/aircraft-list but it doesn't say what is flying when. Does anyone know when the "Top Gun" type aircraft would be flying? Thanks

They've already said that payment can only be made out in cheque in GBP (to me) and likewise I can only pay by cheque in GBP (from me). argh. Been looking at Lloyds online and it seems they do have GBP accounts (hurrah) - can anyone confirm that they can have chequebooks in GBP here in Dubai, and that payment in of cheques in GBP to their GBP account here is all fine with no charges etc? Seems like a good option!

Yet if you were trying to obtain a passport, you would use a birth certificate as proof of your identity? Anyway this is great news, as I thought it would involve numerous trips, a lot of AED and a million documents. Happy days. thanks! :)

Thanks very much for that link. If I'm reading correctly, you could order a full birth certificate for anyone?? :\: :\: Surely people could use that as proof of ID to open accounts and things?...!

Ok so I have two problems, 1) I have cheques in GBP to pay in (No account in UK and no GBP account here. Do GBP accounts here exist? I.e. with Lloyds?) - or would I pay the GBP cheques in to an AED account, seem to remember I've done this before, what charge do they take for this? 2) I need to issue a GBP cheque but have no GBP account here or in UK. Doesn't look like they would accept a transfer or a cheque from someone else. What to do?! Thanks,

You won't get nicer than Mussandam for wild dolphins jumping around your dhow, superb stunning scenery, beautiful weather - lots of the touring companies will do a day trip picking you up in the morning and dropping you off at night. Though, not sure what paperwork issues you have, you would need your passport as it's Oman not UAE Al Ain Wildlife park is lovely (will be busy though!) Just a drive out in to the desert to see camels/sanddunes, pack a picnic and enjoy the peace. East Coast/Dibba/Fujeirah/Hatta for mountains and scenery! edited by Maaam on 01/11/2011

Not really...it is the same procedure as birth/marriage/education certificates, how else can a country establish that a document is legitimate without following this sort of procedure. Otherwise anyone could type their own stuff up, bring it in and present it. It is perfectly sensible.....

JoyceB, your friend was lucky. That is not the correct procedure. The letter from the Dr, (confirming name/passport number etc) and listing the medication, should be notarised/legalised by a Notary Public and then attested by the UAE Embassy in whichever country it has been notarised in. Only then can the person pass through the airport without worrying.

Sorry I read the OP that there was a toddler with another on the way...didn't realise there will be 4 children. Even so, a 3 bed apt will be much cheaper than a villa for both rent/maintenance/dewa etc... :)

OP, you are basing some of your calculations on your rent of 8k per month - that's quite a lot for a small family trying to live on a budget. Really cut that back - there are LOTS of affordable apartments - ok you don't have your garden but if you pick somewhere that has great outdoor space/pools etc, you won't feel like you are missing out. You'll be able to get a large 2 bed apartment easily in lots of locations for 70k (check somewhere like Executive Towers, lovely podium level with grass/walkways for kids/bikes etc, plus two huge pools), there you go you've already saved nearly 30k per year. Also your dewa bills in a villa would be much higher...stick to an apartment for the first year til you get a feel for how much you are able to save. It would also be an idea to pick an apartment close to a metro station, maybe you wouldn't need a 2nd car for the first year til you get sorted. Also agree with previous poster on eating out etc, a group of us regularly go places like Karama to eat, we have a slap up breakfast - the things on the menu are 6 AED each, we can eat as much as we like and the bill is still 20-30 AED each. There are LOTS of affordable and free things to do in Dubai (parks, beaches etc) but many people don't know they exist or don't want to venture into the territories where they are! Not comparing costs of Dubai to costs of UK as not sure - but just pointing out that if you havevcheaper rent, live life according to the cut of your cloth, yes you can live quite cheaply here. . edited by Maaam on 07/10/2011

you don't need a visa. You can get an Egate card whils on a visit visa BUT your passport has to be from one of the 33 countries granted automatic visa on arrival to UAE (i.e. no paper visa required).

Visitors driving privately owned vehicles in the UAE http://www.dubaifaqs.com/driving-licence-international-dubai.php Usually, visitors are not permitted to drive non-rental cars in the UAE unless they have obtained a temporary UAE driving licence. However, there were reports in 2009 that first-degree relatives (children, parents, siblings, spouse) of UAE residents could drive a private car owned by the relative as long as the visitor was a national of one of the UAE driving licence exchange countries, and had a licence from that country with them. This might only apply in Dubai. Confirmation from an official source not found so double check with either a police department, the RTA, insurance company, or all three. But however-however, the ATC UAE website says "[b'>Please note that tourists are allowed to drive only rented vehicles [/b'>(Rent-a-Car)" (last checked July 2010).

For those with the sniffles, check out a little known allergy to the dust from palm trees. Those with tiredness, make sure you have enough salt in your diet - your body needs more here and you sweat it all out - lack of sodium makes you feel zapped/tired. Make sure you get enough Vitamin D, spend ten mins a day in the sunshine.

Glasgow is such a funny place to live....there is so much banter...(google the Glesgae banter....some good clips on Chewin the Fat) :D you get on the bus and it's one chuckle after another.... but not sure if you would have to 'get' the humour to enjoy it. Glasgow has a good atmosphere (apart from on Old Firm days ;) ) - do you know which part you will be living in?

Jenna it won't matter what name/address is on your license. You have your marriage certificate confirming your maiden name right? so you can prove that is you. Just apply for the renewal without changing name etc. Private hire limos are not illegal provided you are getting receipts etc from them - perfectly legit. OR find a taxi driver you are happy with/get his mobile number and arrange for him to pick you up/drop you. edited by Maaam on 11/08/2011

PI, I know that, and I know when Eid is expected to be, but I'm just wondering what days off offices will have (if it will be the same?)....or what days off they are expecting to have, as opposed to which days Eid will be. Never mind............thanks...

ha! err..yes, thanks for that Denshort. :\: I know when Eid is *expected* to be but we know that the actual private sector holidays are not usually announced until a few days before. However those in the know may already have an idea of which days will be declared as private sector holidays, as opposed to which days are public/Eid holidays. Thanks.... :\: :D edited by Maaam on 11/08/2011

So even if Eid is declared 29th or 30th, we would have 2 days (30 & 31?) or would it be 3 days (30/31/1)? Isn't it only 2 days holiday at this Eid and 3-4 at Eid Al Adha? Thanks P.I. PS. Hi... ;) :D

It is completely a huge no-no, on every single level. If the OP wants to help out the couple, she could try and get the lady a legitimate job, help them source some affordable accomodation or try and get the gentleman a better paid job through their contacts. That would be much more helpful.... PS. Dentro. Subletting is also illegal. ;) edited by Maaam on 10/08/2011

People get stopped all the time and asked to produce papers/work permits etc. My DH was stopped about a year ago and asked for his labour card. Maids get stopped a LOT in malls outside parks etc. And questioned. Of course, apartments are monitored and so are villas. Is it really worth it? And the thing is you will pay the maid per hour pretty much what an agency charges (25-30 per hour). Would you (generic) really leave your children with someone in the country illegally?...
