Thank you for taking the time to reply ladies. Some great suggestions which I will look into. Its the first time my brother is visiting my home (we seem to have always lived in different countries since I got married) and I really want to make it special. Thanks.

Oh this is THE hot topic in our home. We are not able to save much as we are paying for the children's education and with all three in school this year, it is something we keep talking about. We could move out of our villa and save from the housing but the kids enjoy compound life and need the space to run around etc. I don't want to go anywhere as I like being here but DH is on another page. I will cross the bridge when it comes!

tamieg1, are u referring to Far East? I know its in that strip; have heard from a friend that it has good food. Though I must say that this restaurant was earlier located close to Thai Snack (2-3 years ago) and we were not too keen on trying it as it did not look clean. May be different now that its moved locations and seems to be a bigger place.

They are coming from Canada. Would I have to be a member for them to use the beach club? Thanks for the suggestion.

If you don't get it at Thai Snack, you can try Thai Chi in Villagio as they have some Chinese dishes on their menu. I don't think there is a Taco Bell here but u can get some Mexican fare at TGI Fridays/Chillis. I have seen a Mexican place at the small complex of restaurants opposite to Al Rayyan Petrol Station. edited by Maple on 04/11/2012

I am left handed and learnt cursive writing in school. Don't remember how we were taught but it certainly helped when taking University exams when we had to write long essays. One of the sons is left handed but right now I am working on him forming his words properly and being neat. In their Canadian school here, cursive writing is introduced in grade 3.

I think the second opinion is a good idea. Our oldest was given prescription glasses when he was four and had a slight lazy eye. On the doctor's recommendation we used to patch his eyes for almost a year (an hour per day and engage him in tasks which would require him to focus his eyes). There was significant improvement and then we reduced the patching to alternate days and tapered off. Also it was harder to convince him for the patch as he was growing older and the reason I mention this is because we personally feel that the patching helped. I don't know if doctors will recommend it here but you can read up about it. Also we were told that the younger the child is the easier it is to correct the lazy eye. I hope you are able to get hold of a good doctor soon.

The shop which PuppyLove2 is referring to is called Shoe Mart and is located as she said in City Centre and Centrepoint (Al Asmakh mall in Al Sadd). I was able to buy school shoes for the kids there for this year.

Trying to decide between these two cars; totally different companies I know but both seem to match our requirements of size, price. We have heard that American cars are more expensive to maintain but are better in terms of safety. Would love to get some feedback. Thank you.

Well good to know this is actually going to happen; brought back way too many bagels etc from Tim Horton's Dubai last night for the kids. I asked in the store there and they said they are due to open soon in Doha.

To the OP, you can get a tourist visa through Fly Dubai. It costs about QR 380 but the condition is that u have to buy the flight ticket through Space Travel. They do the visas for Fly Dubai which takes five working days. Costs QR 100 more than the airline ticket online but that is their condition. Alternately Emirates will arrange visa but u have to take package which includes flight and hotel. Hope this helps. The UAE embassy does not issue visas directly or that's what I was told.

We had a front load in our first apartment in Doha and I hated the limited capacity because I felt like I was always doing laundry. We bought a top load when we moved and its great. Its huge so it means I can even wash the quilts at home. Have a front load as well (was already in the villa) but DH uses it mostly for his motorbike stuff.

I am in Doha but have used the fondant available in Tavola here and it worked well for me. I also first started with my second son's birthday cake and have made a few since. There are some great tips online on how to handle the fondant. Hope that helps.

Minegirl, your comment on bringing psychometric assessments with you makes me ask if you are familiar with the BPS Level A and B Occupational testing course? I will be pursuing it soon and would love to get some feedback. Thanks

Well I should have specified that it will the first time I have to stay alone in a hotel. I have been to Dubai two years ago with DH and kids and we had a lovely time. Coming from Doha so familiar with the general lifestyle etc. My only problem as I have said before is staying alone in the hotel so looking into safety tips from other lady travelers etc. Overall whatever feedback I have got through this forum and otherwise is that Dubai is a safe place for women travelling alone.

Thanks. I am still feeling very nervous about the hotel stay. I have read that Dubai is very safe and there are lots of ladies travelling alone etc. Vixen1, did you feel safe in the hotel? Would it be better to ask for a lower floor?

There are a whole bunch of tailoring shops in the area opposite to the Immigration office. They are not on the main road but if you drive around the back, there are several men's and ladies tailors. DH had his trousers altered there and was happy.

Thank you all for your kind replies. I have spent the last seven years bringing up my boys and have on occasion told DH that I would love to have some time to myself away from everything. When the opportunity presents itself to have exactly this and a big bonus of trying to get back into the work field, I am a bundle of nerves. :) I appreciate all of u taking the time to reply and will try my best to get through this in a positive way.

Well I am really getting worked up and DH is concerned I am not going to be able to study. I have never stayed alone in a hotel so really there are many things going through my head. My biggest worry is safety and if I continue like this I highly doubt the hotel bed is going to be slept in. :(

Thanks for the reply JillMV. I am nervous about staying alone in the hotel...as crazy as that may sound. I am going for a course and am trying to book in the same hotel where the course will be held so I will be in one place. Good idea about the lady taxis and the metro. Will look into that. Thanks.

If they belong to one of the 33 countries that get tourist visas on arrival, they are allowed to stay for one month. An additional month can be added on to the visa by paying QR 100 (this has to be done at the airport should u decide to extend). If you want them to stay longer, then you can sponsor them on a visit visa where you will have to go to Immigration and submit documents etc before they come here, Once they enter on the visit visa they have to do the medical within one month and then you can renew as per number of months for a maximum of six months (the fee is different for number of months). However a word of caution, rules change easily here so sometimes the renewal is based on that. But you can always approach the senior officers at Immigration and make a request if you are denied the period you want them to stay. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies. Mum and DH went to the airport this evening and had the visa extended for one more month for QR 100. She got the original visa on arrival and has been here for close to four weeks now. Just giving extra information in case it helps someone else. Such a mixed bag of information online that we were totally confused.
