Gentle Bump - Just in case someone else has some feedback :) As previously mentioned the thermomix is amazing. I bought mine a month ago. I had been wanting one for ages but the hubby kept saying that it wasn't worth spending the money on a kitchen gadget. Then one month ago we were in the process of moving from Dubai to Oman and had to survive without appliances for two weeks...after 2 days of takeouts I went and got a thermomix as you can simply cook anything with it by plugging it on! All our meals are now cooked in the thermomix. I've made lots of things which I wouldn't normally, ei: veggie stock which has no additives and keeps in the fridge for 6 months, pizza dough in 6 minutes, ice cream, mayonaise, ketchup sauce, jam, nutella spread for the kids, numerous cakes, soups and sauces for pasta, salmon with sauce and veggies in 12 mins etc etc... It's definitely worth every penny!

Bodabz The TlC school is good. It took me a little while to get used to it since my son attended the Wellington academy in Dubai, which, as you may know, has fantastic facilities. TLC is essentially a villa converted into a school so the facilities aren't great, but the teachers are superb so I'm actually quite happy with it. If you want to come to live at the wave I suggest you to drive around the area as I've seen few empty villas and townhouses with telephone numbers on them. Just to let you know, the agents out here don't tend to negotiate on price as much as in Dubai, especially here at the wave! This is a decent website which will tell you how much villas at the wave are going for: http://www.wavehomes.net/property-search6~for=2&cats=6 If you need any more info I will be happy to help! Take care M edited by myriambill on 25/02/2012

Bodabz I'm pretty sure that TAISM is in Azaibah, in which case you may want to consider the following places to live: AzIbah itself has few compounds as well as a multitude of stand alone villas, the prices are quite good and you can really get a very nice house for not much. The only downside, according to some if my friends who live in Azaibah, is that unless you find a compound with swimming pool and playground you won't e able to get a playground in the vicinity. The Wave development. That's where we chose to live at and my son attends a school in Azaibah and it only takes me 10 mins to get to it. The houses are newly built, lovely community- I actually met a lot of friendly mums here at the wave who seem to be very welcoming towards newbies. The downside is that living at the wave can be expensive as I found that anyone trying to sell a product to you, once he/ she realises you live there, you'll be charged triple the price :-@ Al Hail, a bit further down from the Wave but has very nice houses, compounds at good prices and there seems to be more and more expats moving towards that end of town. Hope this helps a bit, I you need any other info give us a shout :)

I am moving to Dubai in July. My husband will work as a Piltot with emirates.I am looking for school, and I saw uptown school, deira international, univrsal academy, GEMS Silicon oasis. Could anyone give me references for those schools? My kids are, 9, 5 and 2. Thank you! Napo Considering your husband is a pilot for emirates you could also try Jess as this the preferential school among emirates staff as the company offers debentures. If I were you I'd apply straight away as Jess is one of the best schools here in Dubai. If no luck there I can only speak for Gems Silicon Oasis as my son goes there and I am really happy with it, good facilities, good teaching and lots of recreational activities to stimulate the kids- at extra cost tho!- Good luck with the search

Oh wikkid We are moving to muscat in two weeks and have already given lots of stuff away. I'm just waiting to find out the measurements for the windows at the new villa and if they don't match up I have few sets of curtains which I will be able to give away. Perhaps I can email you once I find out and can bring them with me to muscat and give them to you there?!

Hi all We are an expat family living in a 2E type house in al reem 3. We really enjoyed living in this house, it's a great size, has a lovely landscaped garden and every weekend we have enjoyed the view of Global Village Fireworks from the master bedroom. Sadly my husband has been asked to now go to muscat therefore we are to vacate our house by the end of this week. Our contract agreement should have ended in April. If anyone is interested in this type of house we have a really great deal rent/wise- 125k per annum- If anyone wants to view it and decides to move in we will transfer the contract over to you via agency. for serious viewers contact me on 0 5 6 7 3 4 1 8 5 2

Sara we are in the process of moving from Dubai to muscat, therefore am currently looking at all the things you are enquiring about. Villas at the wave are really sought after so the prices are fairly high. A three bedroom villa will rent for minimum 1300 rials per month; town houses are cheaper but have no gardens. There are 2 main British schools: Royal Flight and British School of Muscat. The waiting lists are really long! We put my sons name down for next year and were told that so far he isn't going to e able to get into neither of them. There is another small primary school called TLC. The building is not fancy but I've heard good things about the teaching so I also put my son's on the waiting list there and fortunately we managed to get him in. I'd say if your little one is going to end up at the British School of Muscat it isn't ideal for you to live at the wave as it's quite a drive to and from, you'd probably want to look into Madinat Qaboos which is another expat community. hope this helps a bit!

That sound great Myriambill! Do you think you can pass me the details of the agency? Is it in Al Reem? Although most probably they will not rent it to me for 125 but increase it to 150 minimum which is the going rate for those houses at the moment. :( Eli sorry for not having gone back to you sooner, we were in Oman trying to find a house, bl**dy nightmare! The deal with our house is that our lease doesn't end till March therefore we are going to break out of our contract. You can come and see the house if you want and if you like it we can then have a chat with the agency to transfer the lease over to you. Let me know what you think about that. Myriam

Eli Our house is 2800sq with 3 beds a study and a maids room. We pay 125k per annum. We never dealt with the landlord, I think he has multiple properties so does not care who lives in it as long as it's rented. Whenever we had issues we dealt with the lady that manages the property on the LL's behalf. I must say she has been good so far, we had 2 problems since being here and she promptly sent the fm team to sort everything out. If it wasn't for the fact that we are leaving Dubai we would have stayed here very happily. edited by myriambill on 19/12/2011 ps: the layan villas are newer and look lovely, we were also inclined to go there. It was only when a few people told us that the retail area which they promised to be build it's not going to be ready for another few years we opted for the ranches as I couldn't bear the thought of having to drive a distance to get some bread and milk! edited by myriambill on 19/12/2011

Eli979 Don't know if you are specifically looking for a villa in the layan community but we will be vacating our 3 beds in the ranches by mid Jan. We pay a really good price for what we have and it has a nice garden with the communal swimming pool 1 minute away from our house. Anyway, let me know if you still want the Playhouse otherwise I'll start advertising it on dubizzle. M edited by myriambill on 19/12/2011

DesertRose thanks for reassuring me about the traffic! My son has secured a place at TLC,not our first choice but will see how it goes; if we end up liking it he will then stay there for the following academic year. Bodabz, my son is in FS1 so totally different class group to your little one, but I once again called Royal Flight and BSM and the waiting lists are looong. If I were you i'de apply to other schools as well ei: TLC or Muscat International. I'm so stressed right now as my husband only told me we were going for sure yesterday and I'm meant to pack my house, sell few things and sort out our car loan in 20 days, as well as having guests over Christmas. On top of that we know we want to live in the wave but have no idea how to find a place in such a small space of time whilst being in dubai :-@ Apart from that I'm looking forward to a new adventure! Bodabz keep positive as things always end up falling into place eventually :)

Hi bodabz we are going to move to muscat in jan and as a result I've been looking at schools and housing for a while now. In terms of schools the only British ones are BSM in Madinat Qaboos, Royal Flight in al Seeb and TLC also in Al Seeb. We applied to all the above and none have a space for my son, who is currently in fs1. There is a huge problem whith schools inMuscat as there aren't as many as in Dubai therefore the demand is much higher....you may want to start applying, you don't need to pay to fill in the application form btw... In terms of housing I think the main residential areas for expats are Madinat Qaboos, Azaiba and the Wave. At the moment we are in a limbo as unless we find out where my son will eventually get a place it will be rather hard to choose where to live as the traffic in Muscat is horrid and you can easily spend one and a half hour stuck during school runs. I wish you the best of luck and may see u in muscat!

The Jabel Ali group it's in the Christian Church and it consists on a massive room filled with all sorts of toys for the little ones to play with, a little art room where each week they do different things and singing at the end. You can have a cup of tea/coffee whilst your little one plays. It's a nice group, you should try it. There's also the expat woman moms and tots at the battuta mall on Sundays from 10 till 12 and at Mirdif city centre on Tuesdays.

So, went to a popular community club's restaurant with a friend and got coffee. When I asked for the bill the waitress brings back the balance, I put money in the bill's wallet and she asks ' maam how much change do you want me to bring back to you'? I look at her asking what she means....she then says ' oh I'll return the full change then'.......yes please, I think I'm still entitled to choose if i want to leave a tip or not! edited by myriambill on 21/11/2011

Well this move has been a bit of a sudden thing! My son has only started fs1 in sept and is really enjoying it, so am a bit sad to have to take him out of his current school....anyway, we only applied to the schools few weeks ago and as we understand the waiting lists are quite long....so don't really know if he'll get in at all! we did, however, notify my husband's company that we won't be moving unless my son has a place at school; I think it's only fair as they want us to go out there so suddenly. That's why I'm sooooo stressed at the mo!

We're also moving from Dubai to muscat in a month! Have the same dilemma, know which area we want but there's very little advertised on the net... Arohadbx last time we went I picked up a business card from Better Homes who now operate in Muscat as well, I think the contact on my card specializes on the wave area, however if you're after another area she will probably give you the right contact. HOW MUCH??? Goodness me that's a lot! It sounds like he didn't water the grass enough during the hot months. Our gardener used to water it for longer periods during the summer and yes it did turn slightly yellow but never brown, and it has now recouped its green colour. Btw our gardener treats the grass twice a year with manour/soil without charging us extra, and we pay him 200 pm, mind you our garden is not very big.

Been with my two kids when we first got here. It was horrendous, I've never seen anything like that, the animals are all caged in a bunch so very little space, the lion looked tremendously depressed and the baboons all had infections....let alone the stench that evaporated from the animals, which meant they don't get washed :( Very sad indeed edited by myriambill on 30/10/2011

An memory coming back from this thread: I once went to visit a friend of mine (whose house I'd never visited before). She lives in one of the jbr flats. So I actually got her apartment number wrong and ended up going to another one; knocked at the door and this maid opened so I asked if my friend was in and she let me in. She then said " madam coming"' so there a sit waiting for about 15 mins for my friend to appear when a random lady wearing a robe appears, looking puzzled as to why I'm in her apartment; as I explain the situation she says, my maid doesn't speak nor understand English. If you ask me that's a bit scary considering she would let anyone in...

Hi Claire08 my son is the youngest in his class, having turned 3 in July and I was quite apprehensive about being left behind and not being able to fit in with the long hours etc. Well 3 weeks on and he has fully integrated in the school and loves going; if it was for him he'd go even at the weekend. Btw he attends the dso Wellington and I am very pleased with the choice; I can only comment on his teacher and she is fantastic, has extensive experience within fs1 and my son has already shown tremendous progress with his speech and behaviour. If you're debating whether or not to put him into school at only 3 I'd say do it; I'm an active mum and always made sure my son was involved in some type of activity every day. I have however just realised that he wasn't being stimulated appropriately by merely attending play groups and he now does so much at school! I hope this helps a bit with your choice

Hi we did the drive last Friday and it takes 6 hours to and from so unless they stay for a good few days it's really not worth doing the drive. Also as they aren't Dubai residents they'll need to pay 200 aed at the border per person. They may be better off flying to be honest. ps: the 6 hours drive applies if they want to go to Muscat. edited by myriambill on 11/10/2011
