It was announced there would be dieticians or nutritionists, but I'm pretty sure they weren't. All they did was check my weight and I had to write down my name and phone number. Good luck, better register asap, as the longer you wait, the less time you have left.

Drying clothes inside can create health problems. So I use a dryer for the big things like towels and sheets, all clothes are inside on a rack, but in a separate room with the A/C at 27 .

Oopsi: how much do they charge at jw Marriott? 190 at the Arabic Restaurant. But they have it in other restaurants too. http://www.jwmarriottmarquisdubailife.com/whereeastmeetswest/dining/ramadan-offers/ edited by Oopsiedaisy on 21/07/2013

You have to cancel her visa. From the date of cancellation her new sponsor has 30 days to get her new visa processed. For each day it takes longer than the 30- days grace period, they will have to pay a small fine. Technically she is not allowed to live at your house after you cancel her visa, but in practice it is what many people do to accommodate a smooth transfer to the next employer, so I wouldn't worry about that. Just let her stay, that is if she doesn't want to go home with the ticket that you should give her after she finishes her contract.

We went to the Arabic Restaurant at the JW Marriott Marquis (SZR, the new one) tonight. Food was delicious. Venue was quit small (they do Iftars in a few different restaurants), but we loved it. No queues, not a hundred different dishes and cuisines, but Arabic Iftar cooked to perfection. Would definitely recommend.

I know there are some maids, mainly ones in local families, that over time have become so close to the family, they prefer to spend their day off with them, they go out when they go out etc. But that's their choice. Some maids don't want to go out or have off as they are afraid they will spend money, but again that's their choice. But really? They can't get their own glass of water? Seriously? What happens to people when they come here? What do they do when their maids are off? Not eat or drink? The maids you are referring to might exist, but then again how do you know. Is it the maids that tell you, or their sponsor. Not so long ago a poster mentioned that her maid was happy spending all her time with the family, not wanting days off. The next week she absconded. So no matter what, everyone has the right to take a day off. Be it from work or from family. And I agree with Quinn, it seem to mainly ME sponsors (including Jordan) who tend to think maids don't need the day off. I used to live in Syria, many local sponsors would not give their maids a day off. By the way, Beats me why they would need a glass of water anyway, since they are fasting. Well everyone seems to have a different point of view on that. At the same token most women who complain about their maids here on EW are ones that allow their maids to call the shots. Sorry Marroosh, a different take on what?? It is in a maids contract that she has a right to a day off. So since you seem to know some maids don't want a day off, my simple question was if it was the maida that told you that, or their sponsors. We all know what we know from sponsors and not maids, I am not the only one. And we only hear from the people that we know. Very simple. And the whole "it's mainly Arabs who don't treat maids well/don't give days off/etc. I am surprised ladies here are so well in the know about that. We are living in the ME, so our experiences are based on that. But do we all know what happens outside of our ME bubble? You yourself brought the local family part into this thread, by mentioning that their maids don't want the day off. Quinn and I are just stating what we experienced in Jordan and Syria, which is why we are in the know of that. We cannot start comparing to other regions, they may have different laws we don't know about. This is a Dubai Forum.

Quick question on car registration; is there any difference between Abu Dhabi and Dubai car registrations ? I know Dubai renewals are more expensive, but is there any other difference? And lets say you have a Dubai registration, is it difficult to change it to an Abu Dhabi registration ? you usually have to have your car registrataion where your visa isdone, but its easier to do now than years ago to change, but loads of paperwork etc. in the past you had to actually put the car on a transpporter and export it down the road etc, think its a little easier than in years past. No, these days you can also register you car in the emirate where you have your rental contract. We did that without any hassle, but that was the initial registration.

Just to clarify a few points, I have just returned from immigration and asked the following questions myself, so I could be sure I had the correct information. 1. Is it legal for a maid on our sponsorship to live with/or stay her husband if he has accomodation? Answer: yes 2. Is it legal for a maid to be pregnant to her husband? Answer: yes 3. Is it legal for my maid to go home to deliver her baby and return to the UAE to work? Answer: yes 4. If my maid returned from vacation pregnant, and is married, is that legal and can she continue to work here? Answer: yes 5. Would a sponsor be jailed if a maid (married or not) gets pregnant? Answer? No, not unless she said they were the father or claimed rape. 5. Is it legal for me to hold the passport of a maid on my visa against her wishes? answer: no To the OP I would take the legal information that you get on his site lightly. Always check the facts yourself. I personally choose to have a live out maid as I value my privacy. Perhaps she could stay with her husband one night a week instead of him staying with you (if he has accommodation)? Would that make you more comfortable. Especially as you have young girls in he house. Thanks Flydiver, for taking the time to post this. You are confirming what I always thought would be the case, but have doubted since so many posters state the opposite. Too many people try to control their maids life by hiding behind their so-called laws.

Of course everybody needs a day of, as a matter of fact maids are legally entitled to one. I fully agree with you Snugs, but some ladies on this Forum claim that their maid "doesn't want a day off". I remember a thread on the maids forum not so long ago. I would like to add 1 thing however: Don't just be kind during the Holy Month, but do the right thing all year round. Ramadan Kareem.

I have a live-out maid and the questions mrs.b mentioned are vital. Also you will have to ensure in advance that you have the same interpretation as to what is and what is not included in her salary (things like food and transportation). As to her breaks, I leave that entirely up to herself. I gave her a very detailed list of responsibilities, work that needs to be done, from day to day. As long as it gets done it is up to her to manage her time. She tends to prefer to go home early instead of taking breaks.

Assuming they don't have a wedding list, I always find it difficult to buy home wares, as they tend to be very susceptible to personal taste. Something like a silver photo frame or candlesticks are pretty much universal.. Why not get your husband to get the colleagues together, so they can buy something substantial?

Thanks CW. What puzzles me is how the Philippine government can dictate the minimum salary in the UAE. Shouldn't a UAE contract adhere to UAE law? And if it is less then 1400, (as is perfectly legal here), but the maid is happy because eg she has other benefits, how can the Philippines object? edited by Oopsiedaisy on 16/07/2013

Reviving this thread: Is there any update on this. Recent experience? Is the OEC form (which I suppose is the exit-clearance) really necessary. Any other documents? Will the maid get in trouble if her contract (and thus the OEC) mentions a salary lower than the 1400AED as required by the Philippine Embassy?

There was also a playground game (cannot recall the name) but one person covered their eyes and counted to 20 whilst the group ran and hid. The person counting would finish and try to find another then once spotted, both would run to the 'counting area' and shout 'out' - or similar to that effect. I also remember....ahem......kiss chase!! edited by Alaingirl on 11/07/2013 Wouldn't that just be called "hide and seek"?

Just had a picture posed on my FB for 'who remembers this in the 70s'... A long piece of elastic, tied, with two people and the elastic placed around their ankles and another would jump in between to a singing rhyme or tune and at the end, jump on the elastic - used to then go to knee height and waist. Those were the good old days of childhood!! Before I even opened this thread, Elastics was the game I was thinking of! We did it in a triangle, no singing, but trying to get over as high as possible, sometimes even holding it above our heads. So Elastics, and Jumping Rope were the games that occupied us on and outside the school grounds. Tried to explain it to my niece some time ago. She gave me a look as if I came from another planet.

google : article 65 of federal law number 8 they need to reduce your working hours by 2 and it must not effect your pay. the non muslims at our work place are working normal hours and those who are observing ramadan are working 6 hours a day Thanks ladies! I spoke to HR they said I'm getting paid by the hour (unlike other full-time employees), as in I have to do 8 hours a day to get my full salary since I'm temporary, so if I work less hours, I get paid less. I think since I'm Muslim and fasting and I'm a woman, they should allow me less hours? Not sure what to do :( edited by sourskittleashnut on 10/07/2013 I cannot comment on the law, and what you should do, but what does being a woman have to do with it?

Filipinas (if that is her nationality) prefer to live in Satwa. They can rent a room for dhs600 per month there. Good public transport all around. dhs600 doesn't get them a room. It gives them a mattress (upper or lower) in a bunk bed in a room with usually 3 or 4 bunk beds.

Schiphol is quite big actually and it has 3 terminals. It all depends on which airline she is flying. Different airlines use different terminals, so if she changes her flight with the same airline she has to switch within the same terminal and would be oke. If not, use the accompanied minor service.

Wow, if this is true and a maid can indeed do some work in a friends house, this opens a world of opportunities. My maid is in the same boat as Cleo's. On our full time live-out sponsorship but with only a few days work to do. Like Cleo's she is not moonlighting because her job is too good to be true. But I do have friends that could use an occasional hand. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 30/06/2013

I would definitely not recommend Atlantis. We stayed there for a weekend last summer (living in Dubai though). Too crowded with package deals, food only average (Nobu, as well a s the breakfast buffet). Even at the summer rate I will never go back. Once you get into the water in Aquaventure, all is fine, but long queues and very hot. The sea in Dubai in summer is horrible. Like a warm bath. Thanks for sharing it, but if I found unbelievable price - is it still does not worth? Well, it really depends. I wouldn't spend another night there, I find it highly overrated. But if you don't mind the hugeness, impersonal, crowded atmosphere of the place, you could go I guess. But still, 989 for a night is a lot of money. Many Dubai hotels have summer deals. Maybe check them out before you decide.

I don't think OP wants "a way out". She wants her MIL out of the marriage and wants to try make her marriage work for the sake of her daughter. I can't keep wondering how OP seems to be able to have fairly frequent Internet access, without being able to contact her brother in UK and ask him for help. The in-laws cannot prevent him or her parents from seeing her if they turn up on their doorstep in Sharjah now, can they?

Have you cancelled your maids visa and put her on a plane back home? Remember you are still responsible for her, until she has left the country or found another sponsor. Finding a new maid can be quite challenging. I would check on the classifieds here, and firstly pick those who are warmly suggested by their current families. True, some lie to get rid of their maids, but when a family leaves Dubai that would be a good start. There is a thread on here where someone is recommending their maid, starting July first. Why not give it a go. Good luck.
