I doubt it's not thought through. They have to create 5000 new jobs this year as per yesterday's newspaper for nationals and I know many people including myself who will resign and rather go home than moving to Abu Dhabi, guess which nationality the new hires will be. At the end of the day the new rule only effects AD gov and semi gov entities and they just really don't care much about if the some expats find school places or not. Why would they care? Many other countries take care of "their own" first. Why would here be any different. If you don't like it: leave. Btw, in many countries effected by the crisis people are currently being given the choice to either move to another location or loose their job. A year's notice is ample time.

What time would you say you need to get there for? My son is desperate to see Andy Murray play...but he's not coming so assuming he comes next year then we would want tickets. Is it just pot luck who you are seeing...sorry not a massive tennis fan myself! If you want tickets for the finals, I'ld say 8 at the latest. However days 1,2 and 3 tickets are only 50 dhs and all the players will be playing those days. They will be available all morning I suppose.

I occasionally do this, and to be on the safe side, I transfer the money to the ticket holder beforehand. They then book their own flights.

No tears here, but the movie brought it all back and then some. The devastation and the circumstances under which survivors were treated. The evening news only rarely, and when, only a few seconds, gives image from within hospitals. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 14/01/2013

Anyone been to any of the restaurants in the Atlantis? Any recommendations? Been to Nobu, but found it highly overrated. Same for their French Brasserie. All restaurants in Atlantis are crowded with tourists, so it's definitely not romantic. I intend to never go there again.

First of all, define "long". If it's 3 days, It would be a stretch. 4 days, depending on the flight times should be doable. Driving from Amman to Petra takes about 6-7 hours, so unless you want to arrive in the dark (I tend to prefer driving by day in the ME) it would be a challenge. From Petra to Dead Sea, depending on the route, would take you appr. 5 hours. Distances are long, and there are lot's of speed controls, so you can only do 100k/h. If you stay at the Movenpick, both at Dead Sea as well as in Petra, they will arrange for your transportation, which might be the cheapest way to move around. Movenpick Petra is at the entrance of the site, so you won't waste any time (or money) getting there. Movenpick Dead Sea seems to be good as well, however we usually stayed at Kempinski (not many kids running around). If it's your only chance, I would say take it.

We have always rented out our house, so whenever we went back home, we were living out of suitcuises, camping at friends and family. We were sick of that arrangement, so we bought an apartment just the size that fits us, and we love it! Wouldn't have it any other way. It is soooo nice to come into your own place when it looks just the way you left it. So much more relaxing, a trip home is a real vacation now.

Somehow I didn't gave to watch the link you posted in order to know what you were talking about. It is a known and very very sad situation in a EU country. Unbelievable in this day and age. Good luck to you and your family. These children need more people like you.

Online has proven to be close to impossible the last few years. So last year as well as today, I went to the stadium early in the morning and managed to get all tickets I wanted. It was very well organized today, unlike last year where latecomers would keep cutting the line. If you really want to get tickets, next year, take the morning off and stand in line.

Many will find lots of reasons why it would not be safe. But if you are happy and confident driving here, I'ld say go for it. Most people come to Dubai following their dream. If you've always wanted a TT, then get it and enjoy!

Mine tried to open an account last year, but ended up not doing it. I believe there is a minimum deposit of 5000 dhs and other stuff. Since you're probably not talking off huge amounts, why not "set one up" yourself. Get a small safety box, agree on a monthly amount she wants to save and keep the box in your own safe. You can even give her a small percentage of interest on the money she manages to save. As kind of an incentive because must maids have a really hard time saving.

Normal procedure should have been: prescribe a wide spectrum antibiotic and take bloodsample. Chances are that the wide spectrum AB covers the bacterial infection. Result of the blood test takes a day max., so you can stop the AB if it is a viral infection or change to another one if ithe current AB doesn't cover the bacteria that is causing the illness. For now I would continue the AB (it may take a few days to kick in) but have her blood tested ASAP, and take it from there. Don't know how long you have been with the GP, if long and happy so far, I would have a serious discussion with him/her. If only recently I would switch.

Why take euros at all? Just use any ATM at the airport, but use you debit card, not your CC, they will charge you. If you do decide to take euro's, I'm with Sam7, denominations above 50 are very uncommon in most European countries.

I don't know what your home country is, assuming it is not Indonesia: Bali is fantastic in summer and you can rent lovely (catered) beach Villa's at reasonable prices. France and Italy are nice, so are Cyprus and Sicily. Emirates flies almost everywhere non stop, you can also go skiing in Argentina or Chili. Numerous options really, depending on what you like. Booking is same as at home: crawl behind your computer and start searching.

We went there quite often when we were living in the area. Yes, it's affordable compared to the Alps, but besides that there is no comparison. Only a handful of beginners slopes, so if you want to ski, don't go. If you want some time in the snow with the occasional slope, it is fun for a day or 2.

Mmmm, toddlers are quite inventive, so I wouldn't take that risk. Thought it was for preventing break-ins and found while researching the locks are not very effective. But I guess for preventing a toddler from going out they would be good enough.

Alternatively you could buy a square splint, have ACE cut it at exactly the same length of the ledge behind the right part of your sliding doors. Partly put in a small screw to lift it when doors need to be opened. For a couple of dirhams you have a better effect then putting in a lock. Never fails.

Bought all my appliances at Plug-Ins, Festival City. Good prices, large selection and good service. Last year during DSF they gave Ikea vouchers. Was quite a good deal as I was just moving in at that time.

It has a separate knob for grill & oven, then a button to push in if you want rotisserie which I've never used. I've never seen gas ovens where the flames are right underneath, my mum won't cook with anything but gas, her oven the flames are at the back. It's a Whirlpool which I thought would be ok, I just wished I'd insisted on paying to stay with electric, DH doesn't understand my frustrations but then he never cooks!! He will understand once you start serving him burned food and cookies. ;-)

Personally I would not rely on the staff to be on hand and help. In Dubai I've walked all the way to immigration without seeing even 1 staff member. Wheelchairs etc. could be requested via airline, but you obviously don't need them (however would be the cheap option to get them off board, through immigration and luggage). Marhaba or Ahlan would be your best option. They are not about transport (unless needed), but about helping people find their way and ease the immigration process. They will also help with the luggage. I would definitely go for Ahlan with elderly parents.

This really shouldn't happen. If you put your pots etc. in the middle of the oven, on the roster (not on the black plate) and use the right option (the option on your button where it has flames on top and below) you should be able to bake everything you like. That button has way to many options IMO, I only use this one, and sometimes the grill.

Hi there Would all JBR residents please be so kind as to help me out? :) What is the roadworks / noise situation like down at JBR these days. I literally haven't been down there for months, not since the new mall / car park was started. My dad has just sprung a surprise visit next month and he always stays at the Hilton JBR. Is it unbearable noise-wise? bear in mind he is the fussiest person in the world and complains at the slightest thing so anything more than a whisper and his holiday will be ruined. They usually take a room facing the Ritz Carlton side (he actually has his favourite room which he insists upon every year) not the Sheraton side - will this avoid all the noise? OMG I'm actually having palpitations about them coming, he is so high maintenance it is unbelievable; I feel like I only just recovered from the last annual visit... I'm sure he's looking forward to seeing you too... lol Probably not so much TDB, but his new grandchild.

This thread is shocking! I cannot believe some posts I read. Just because you were born in Europe, US or Australia, doesn't mean you're God's gift to heaven. Why? This is the reality here. People get so angry about maids' salary and won't accept any justification from others who couldn't afford to pay what they consider high salary. And yet the same people have no problem taking a swipe at other people's education background and qualification just because they are not from western countries. Some westerns that I met in my industry are very qualified and have very impressive experience but some are not. The same can be said about people from non western countries. It may be reality, that doesn't make it right. I've been here quite some time now and I cannot and will not get used to that attitude.

Er, No, because i have 15+ years experience and i have a degree from one of the top universities in the world. Not really anything to do with nationality or skin colour. So do I, which means I am overqualified for the job and would never apply. This is clearly some kind of admin job which means that the proposed salary is very reasonable, even for European standards.
