But that's just it: She is NOT your daughter, she is your employee and an independent adult. Your house is not her home, it's her living arrangement that comes with the job. I would think that on their day and night of, any maid would maybe enjoy not being arounfpd the house and family. They need a break every week, just a we happily close the door to our offices on a Thursday night. Sorry but she is not an independent adult - she is a domestic servant who you are solely responsible for. In that case, next time I go out with my girlfriends and stay the night, I will ask DH for permission. Sorry, but being a sponsor doesn't mean you own the other person. Be it domestic servant or spouse.

I would just say no, the same way I've said no to my daughters when it came to sleeping over at someone house. Its the way I was brought up and its still culturally relevent here - if you have your own 'home' then why do you need to sleep somewhere else unless you're on a holiday or away for a break. But that's just it: She is NOT your daughter, she is your employee and an independent adult. Your house is not her home, it's her living arrangement that comes with the job. They need a break every week, just a we happily close the door to our offices on a Thursday night. To the OP: make sure she knows what she can and cannot do, explain the rules, regulations and consequences in this country and ask to meet the aunty, if only to ease your mind.

It is beyond me why your DH is still giving this lady the benefit of the doubt. Why would you be paying for her overstay. You do not owe her anything, so if I were you I would report her absconded ASAP. With respect to the passport: as far as I know it is possible to have it whilst under process. Immigration only needs a copy. After it is processed they need it one day, to stamp etc. In the meantime it can be with the (prospective) sponsor.

If you are used to Oman, you can certainly take the heat in Sharm El Sheikh. It's really not that bad, and the Red Sea stays cool as opposed to the Oman and UAE coastal waters.

Hi! There is no law here about this. You can leave a 2 year-old at home all day if you want. Not without the wrath of the ladies on this forum upon you you can't. But true, I don't think the authorities would care.

10% in restaurants is oke. For the driver in your example, I think 10JD would be appropriate. Same for tour guides etc. Have a great trip.

I agree with DH, taking away her phone is too strict. She works 7am to 8pm? That is 13 hours. You really cannot expect anyone to refrain from personal calls that long every day. I would tell her she cannot use the phone whilst minding the children. I see no harm in taking calls when she is cleaning (as long as the work gets done).

Aah, sorry to hear that. Not a nice way to start your holidays. Maybe you can have them paint Easter eggs (if you haven't already done that!). Then let each hide a bunch for the other. Should keep them occupied for some time. Anyway, all the best for DD.

I fully agree with Gorobattie: everyone has to make their own decision on the balance between childcare and work, and it will be different for all. What strikes me is that quite a few posters mention that being a working mum is sooo hard in Dubai. That is nonsense! Being a working mum is hard. Period. Schoolruns, homework, out of school activities, same in most countries. If anything, it is easier in Dubai considering the extreme low costs of hiring a nanny or maid. This makes up for the lack of close family to help with childcare. In the end all these things will have to be taken into account while deciding where to live, what hours to work and how to balance the little time you have with kids as well.

Depends what you are looking for. If you go to the beach resorts, they are the same as everywhere else, so luxurious etc. If however you want to explore the country, meet the people and experience the culture and lifestyle, it's a whole different ballgame and yes, most likely it will (still) be old and worn out. I went 15 years ago, and honoustly, that is part of the charm of Cuba. It may have changed, but not very much as far as I have heard.

Maryam, sorry to hear it didn't work out. :(. Since you have already been in contact with her previous sponsor, why not call him again to hear his side of the story. If he did send her back and you like her, you can always decide on flying her back yourself. And with regards to finding a helper, I found my lady through an add that was placed on EW classifieds by her former employer. At least it is some reference, if an employer is willing to do that, so maybe try and find one that way? Good luck.

We live in Arabian Ranches and were forced by law to remove all of our Damas tress. Our garden now looks horrible but I totally understand the damage these trees were causing to the neighbours. These trees are now illegal to plant in the UAE unless you are out in the desert. They are totally banned especially in Emmar properties. In that case I guess the garden souk guys as well as the landscaper/gardeners haven caught on yet!

A similar thread earlier this year, saved me from this misery. Our gardner proposed a quick fix for covering the water tank in our garden. He brought 15 Damas trees. When I asked him what trees they were, I had him take them out immediately. When I asked him about the problem he said yes yes, but he apparently didn't care. So for all of you landscaping a new garden, be careful, all gardeners love them!

I don't have kids of my own, but every year we take my sister 's kids skiing. During the 10 hout drive they cannot get enough of the remake of Smokey's Alice, Alice, who THE **** is Alice. They don't actually sing the **** word, but almost choke giggling every time it comes by. Not very educational, I know, but great fun :)

DH and I had been working in the garden all day yesterday. So after a nice BBQ DH realizes his back and shoulders are completely "stuck". Would there be a physiotherapist open on Beach or Wasl. Naaah, it't 11 pm on a Friday night I tell him, no chance. He goes and tries anyway and guess what, plenty of physio's open who will take you without an appointment. Still can't believe it!!

Do not buy a European or American SUV. They don't make cars with specs especially for the Gulf region, so you will have an AC unfit for these circumstances. All Japanese brands do Gulf specs, so with Toyota, Mitsubishi or Nissan you'll be all right. Edited to add American. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 30/03/2012 I disagree. We imported both of our cars from the states when we moved here and both have excellent a/c. Our Honda Odyssey Touring has 3 rows of a/c and gets cold right away and our GMC Envoy has two rows of a/c and individual climate control and it also gets cold quickly. Well, the Honda is Japanese. GMC I don't know of, sorry if I was mistaken. In general though the Japanese cars are best in this climate.

Second Beebers. As a city SF has so much more to offer then LA. Just wandering around the streets, the crookedest street in the world, the painted ladies, is soo wonderful. LA has Hollywood, Disneyland and the studio's, that's basically it. So if you can, I would spent 2 more nights in SF.

What hospital is he at? I'm currently trying to find a surgeon to do a hernia repair. Thanks :). DubaiCat, just something to maybe think about: in Holland we hardly perform any hernia operations anymore. The general opinion is that the same, or most likely even better results can be gained through physiotherapy. Maybe you have already tried and decided on the surgery, but if you haven't, it might be worth a go.

I will check that, I believe we also wrote our usage down somewhere, but even still, in one of the threads it mentioned that DEWA came along and changed the meters because they were supposedly not working. And how about the green zone, haven't figured that out yet. Is it nighttime? Can you tell me how it worked?

I have always had live out helpers. My experience is that you have to basivcally "force" them to drink or eat anything at all during the day. Most don't even like the food we have. Depending on your and her nationality. I would sit her down, tell her she is free to help herself to coffee, tea, water (and soda/juice). Fruits, crackers etc. Most likely she will not eat it. I always ask her what food she likes, so I can buy it. Never had a decent answer, so I buy cookies and they seem to love them. Breakfast and dinner is taken at home, so it's really snacks only during the day. HTH
