That is great. You deserve it, with all the efforts you have put into finding him. Now all we have to do is find the owner of the puppy in Mirdif.

I refuse to go and buy another pair of socks! In that case you should probably start a thread about how best to wash the one pair you have. I bet it will stay on. ;)

As far as I know this should be no problem at all. Your initial visa will be cancelled upon departure and a new one will be issued when you return. But I am EU, so maybe the rules for Canadians are different.

I would mind my own business. As I do when I see parents smoking around their kids, feed them rubbish or ignor them completely while the nanny runs around with them. I do not agree with these practices, but they happen, and there is nothing I can do to change that. Most people do not take criticism well.

This is true as far as I know. It seems that each person has a different level of exercise / heart rate that causes the most effective form of weight loss. The first part of the exercise is merely "warming up"' then the next part is loosing weight, but if you go on too long you are building endurance and muscles ( which is conta productive if you want to loose weight. For me e.g. my heart rate while exercising should be between 120-140 in order to loose weight. But all depends on the fitness of your body and your actual weight. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 28/01/2012

The only university in The Netherlands that offers a graduate and masters programme in medical science is Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Their website: www.rug.nl will give you al the info you need. Groningen comes as a highly recommended university with excellent teaching standards. In addition it is a very popular city for students. Not too big, safe, very nice actually. The student grants have changed quite a bit over the last 20 years. I believe that if you do not qualify for a full scholarship, loans are offered to students. The conditions of these loans are quite good. Students will also get free public transport etc. You can find the info on: www.ib-groep/International. And even without the grants, due to the heavy subsidies of the Ditch government, studying in The Netherlands is probably one of the cheapest options available. Hope this info will get you going.

My hubby also puts up with alot from me - way too personal to go into, but we all have our faults and I have many!! He is funny about his sleep, but that's one of the few faults he has and I thank God he doesnt have destructive faults like heavy drinking or gambling etc. We just accept each others faults and get on with it. :) Well put Ginnee - many people seem to love picking on the faults of other people's husbands, I am sure nobody has a perfect one! Just because he is protective of his sleep does not mean you should file for divorce! Agree! Why do people turn a straightforward question about medicine into a discussion on someone else's husband or marriage. That's not helping. Happens quite often on this forum IMHO.

Dear Elle, I hope you're feeling better this morning. The best man is an ****, His wife and her friends are nit much better. She should have been looking after you, being best man's wife. Don't feel guilty, give your fiancé a cuddle when he gets home, and do not let it spoil your wedding day. And after your wedding, do go out and find a fun bunch to hang out with, so you don't have to rely on your DH's friends wives!

I have an Omron. It is very accurate. Take one with an arm band, the ones that go on the wrists are less reliable. Best is to take it to your GP and measure the blood pressure manually and with your omron. You then know if and how much the difference is. I've seen them in most pharmacies here.

These identity theft things can get very ugly. You had better check everything properly. This was only Vodaphone. For all you know they may have used your name and address for credit cards etc. In some cases it turns out to be extremely difficult for the victims to prove their innocence. I don't won't to worry you, it might be over and dine with, but if I were you I'ld do a thorough check!

Unfortunately I am able to tell you that my helper has informed me (I talk to her a lot) that she shares a room with more than a dozen other girls and cockroaches intermittently. She never complains but rather under duress tells me about her life with a smile. I am frankly fed up with the lack of compassion, humanity and empathy I experience on a daily basis towards these courageous and self-sacrificing girls and boys who clean up our c@@p on a daily basis. If I can make my helper's life a little less hideous by paying her extra, knowing it wlll end up in her pocket, then I will in the knowledge that what your lot in life is, is purely a random thing. Kathyt, good for you! You are so right, we have been so lucky to have been handed the cards we were handed. Too bad many people seem to take this for granted. But your last post did it for me. No agency! Dubizzie, maybe we can at least find shared accommodation for our helpers (if we are not too far apart). If you want to see if we could make that work, please ring me: zero five five one zero five five two one zero

Hi Julie, we are in the middle of this process, here's what I found: You do not need your visa in order to sign a tenancy, however our LL did require a letter from DH's employer stating that the visa request is under process. In addition, since we couldn't yet hand over the cheque (you can only get a non-resident bank account as long as your visa isn't fully processed), they needed employer to state that by the time the lease will start, you do indeed have the funds to hand over the cheque. The bank will issue a bankcheque on a non-resident visa if there is enough balance on your account. You need to have a signed rental contract, before you can open DEWA, don't know about bank account. However I would really open the non-resident account whilst you are here. As soon as your visa is processed they will change into normal account, but by then you will gave your ATM cards, they can do the cheque etc. LL are not keen on tenants without those securities. As for car hire, we went with thrifty, but mainly because DH's employer had good company rates with them. Good luck to you.

Hi Dubizzie, I know it's illegal, but we should probably share! How crazy is it that this is not allowed. In our previous location we shared a lovely lady with 3 couples. Full flexibility and available whenever we needed her. She was happy living with her sisters who had the same arrangment, and no money lost to agencies. We would share the cost for the home flights. She was earning good money and payed her own living accomodation, and our costs were very acceptable. Anyway, I still think we'll go for the full-time option because, like I said before, I have a strong feeling the agencies are exploiting the helpers, no matter what others seem to think. I guess that there are a lot of good stories as well, we just do not tend to talk about those. I figure the hassle with the sponsoring is once a year. The costs equal to hiring a lady through an agency (if you do 16 hours a week). Curious to hear what you will be doing.

You ladies keep on ranting. To anyone who is neither British nor Australian, both taste absolutely disgusting.:):):) It is on that point that the Aus and Brits join forces! Crazy Americans who only eat peanut butter and jelly (jelly which is jam but they call it jelly like crazy people :D) Don't the Kiwis have their own version of Vegemite too? I'm Dutch, so we only do cheese and hagelslag :)

I will be having my transplant march/April in Europe, but my nefrologist advised me to look for one here as well, in case anything urgent needs attending to after recovery. I reckoned it better to find one I like and trust now, because when there is an emergency of any kind I wouldn't have time to do it properly. Could you please ask that lady you work with who she goes to here (if she is happy with him/her). TIA

They will get indeed a pretty good deal. I agree it seems unequal, on the other hand you might have the advantage of getting hired over other candidates because of it. But you don't really need the expat package, do you. I would just be happy to have found a job I like.

Hi Sibille, I was wondering the same thing. I see so many classifieds of maids offering their services and claiming to be on own, or husband's visa. So I figured: if this is illegal (which I had come to understand) why would they be advertising openly then. Guess nobody is monitoring it then. Anyway, too bad, I would go for live-out non-agency anytime if it was legal.

You ladies have got to be kidding me! Something as simple as this not available in Dubai? On the other hand it is probably to idiotic to want to do this yourself here. I don't have the guts to have a laundry come pick up my stuff at a hotel though. Anyway, should I decide to start my own business I have now found the niche! Thanks for your help, and should anyone do know about this being available after all, I'm all ears.

Hi katthyt, I checked the website. They mention excellent accommodation etc. for the girls. Do you know this to be true? Does your helper seem happy with her employer? Sorry for all these questions, it is not that I am overly protective or anything like that, I just hate any kind of exploitation. Used to be human rights advisor to a large international Corp., have seen so many terrible things going on, and do not want to partake in any of that!

Thanks Joanna, that is precisely my worry, the way agencies seem to treat these girls/ladies. And I see the temptation of looking for other work, therefor I was thinking that having the spouse here, as opposed to overseas, would at least allow them to have a family live and thus keep busy. Don't know, maybe a long shot, but I thought let's try find out what all you experts think about it.

No point in going to doc IMO. Take some aspirin if it gets really bad, and make sure to eat/drink vitamin C. Press fresh lemons, add hot water and honey. That'll do the trick. But unfortunately it will mainly take time.

Hi, we are new in Dubai and moving into our house in Jumeirah1 somewhere mid February.. Not fully familiar with all the rules and possibilities, but we are looking to sponsor and employ a maid from Sri Lanka. We do however not need or want her to be around full-time, but we would be willing to pay on a full time basis. The only thing is that she should live somewhere else. Would she consider that? Would it be a legal arrangment? edited by Oopsiedaisy on 21/01/2012
