Was it a local brand of water? If so there's actually a price cap set by the economic department, I think the max charge for a large bottle is 15dhs!! I'd check it out for sure and report them. Lots of places do it, you just have to tell them you know the law and they will back down. Will see if I can find the link.

It will do them some good to be away from you. They wull learn that you come back. Perhaps just do some practice beforehand, not sur eif you have home help, but go out for 20mins (even just to drive down the road and back in that time), then an hour and so on.... Sur ethey might cry and fuss a bit the first few times but honestly, they'll get over it. I remember screaming the place down when I first went to kindy, two days in I didn't want mum to come back! lol....

Ok thanks girls! The empty handbag is a good idea- when you say they were giving out water, do you mean just at the end or through the whole event? I want to take a small bottle with me but I guess they would take it away at the gate... Hoping they don't take cameras too! :/

Sue, that's what I meant when I said ladies should wear a bra... a strapless one! And yeah, they look cr@p with huge b00bs, I guess what I meant was with fake ones, lol.... On anyone else I think they look a bit weird... even on me! I hate how they almost always have elasticised tops, so they squish everything down.... Wearing them under other stuff looks fine though. While we're at it, I do wonder why so many stores sell untra-short dresses & skirts when we're not really meant to be wearing them here anyway. There was a woman in Dubai mall the other night wearing a sequinned dress, as she walked by me I could see the crease of her ar$e cheek!!! Seriously, how she got in I have no idea, disgusting!

The best thing I ever tried was a tailor... as a traditional "hourglass" I seriously cannot find anything to fit me very often- either it fits the hips and too big in the waist, or fits the bottom but I don't have enough to fill out the top.... If you LOVE something and it looks nice pinned (ask the shopgirl for pins/pegs- lots hae them) the it might just need a teeny alteration or two.

Suz is right- flights to Oz are a long haul and the closest you'd be to help is 3hrs- at worst, something could happen out near Cocos or Xmas island and depending on the aircraft thy may not be able to land closest airport (e.g A380 can get into Learmonth or Perth but not others which might be closer) bearing in mind too that is for a 'normal birth, nothing for complications... you could be lookig at landing into an airport that is not near to expert/ICU help and then an aeromedical flight to a bigger hospital. The equipment onboard is limited at best, a basic delivery kit and of course some training but 99% of crew would never have done it before... yes some have been nurses or you may be lucky and have a Dr on board (in my experience most are GP's or Dr's of other disciplines, not medical doctors) and *if* there were to be complications- It could be a very big problem. Not to scare you but there have been cases around the world were babies were born on planes and were fine- and others have died due to being too far from the required care/equipment/facilities. A friend of mine has delivered a baby on board and said they would never wish to do it again, very horrendous for all involved and the mother needed a lot of attention later on (think of things they do in hospital to 'ease' the birth, hard to say if they'd authorise cabin crew to do that) also some medications can only be used by a doctor on board, not even with permission from doctors on ground- e.g. forceps, so if they were needed and no doctor on board- you're out of luck.... I would think very very carefully and get as much medical advise as possible. There is a reason they say avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary this close to the end.

No I get that but I thought since the first bus leaves at 9.30 then likely that SP will have done by then... do these things normally getpacked? never been and not planning to go for 12hrs from 2 til 2!!! I know taxi will be ridiculous, do you have to book the bus or just turn up and wait for the one you want to take? I pretty much just want to get anywhere near a red line Metro station (unless that will be ridiculously crowded too!) I'd guess I'll go home at 11pm-ish...

If I wanted something expensive I had to do chores and parents would pay a set rate per chore. Once I had half the amount they would match it depending on the item(say, for a dvd player or game console) They would cover my food & board if not working, and so long as I did chores mum would take me shopping for clothes every so often. Once I started working I gave a percentage of my (variable) salary for board (about 30-40%) and if I had any big nexpected bills parents helped me out by paying and we had a book where I would pay them money back and we would write down how much left owing etc... Good system! Teach him now before he gets older and gets his hands on a credit card... v v dangerous for kids/teens who don't know the 'value'of stuff- or it will just be 'free money' to him. Also, ask if there is a reason he is angry and breaking things- there might be something else to it (bullies at school etc)

Oh another point- as I find many people have this confused- online check in is a seat request only, it's not a guaranteed reservation for a particular seat- hence people being split up means there's not much you can do as it's often to factors like oxygen masks which I've mentioned in detail in another post. The later you show up to drop bags when doing OLCI, the slightly higher the risk of being given a different seat, especially if you turn up right before flight close out... just a tip if you're travelling in a group! Also make sure you're all booked under the same reference number, not separately and just doing OLCI and picking seats near to each other. If the system doesn't know you're a group, it will split you if the seats are needed elsewhere (e.g. to seat kids with families, mums with babies, elderly etc)

Originally OLCI was designed for frequent travellers with little or not checked baggage. If you travel with only carry-on (as I regularly do) you can be through in less than 5mins and head right to security. Much of the time I'm travelling as a staff member so I have a different procedure to follow, but on times when I'm using full fare tickets I always use OLCI, cabin bags only if possible. If I have checked bags, I try to use those two self-service booths to the right of the main counters (easy to overlook) they have a baggage belt next to them so you can drop the bags there. Of course, it helps to be member of a FF program as they often have perks (e.g. high tiers being allowed to use the J or F class desk if there's no queue, even in travelling in economy- check with your airline/program to see if you get this benefit.

Bassinette weight limit on *most* Ek planes is 11kg- however, this is also subject tot eh size of the child, as mentioned, some of them will not be suitable even under that weight. Please follow any crew direction regarding this. If I have to hear "But it was ok on the last flight..." one more time.... ;) Kids do grow between flights.... also, the crew on THAT flight is responsible should anything happen, not the crew on the last flight.... just a general tip (most of us want to stay out of jail, thanks) Also, put the basinette up even if you're not using it (explain to the crew if they have said no to using it, that you want it up to stop people crossing. Also, if people do, let the crew know. If I notice people doing this I'll tell them not to. It's rude and also they could fall on you and the kids. Not on. I would STRONGLY suggest (if you know the flight to be nearly full/full- as most Oz flights seem to be these days) booking a seat for 10month old. From what I have seen, you do not want to try this flight with a kid that age on your lap. As mentioned, you could try for the 'blocked seat' but be aware if someone turns up last minute they can and will allocate thatseat if someone else is willing to pay for it. The only way to guarantee seats is to pay for them. Be aware some bulkhead seats are near galleys- you may or may not prefer this. Seatguru is a great idea- you can then try for bulkhead rows in the middle... but due to the nature of aircraft you will almost always have to choose between being near a toilet or a galley. If you get those bulkhead seats which are near doors, take some cardigan or blankets for the kids, as it can get cold by the doors on long flights. Take snacks and any foods, toys, formula nappies etc that you may need. We supply some of these things but in the case there are many children, these can and do run out. It's better to take things your kids will like, just in case. Be aware kids' meals won't be given without a seat, so if you book for only the 5 year old, you will only get a meal for the 5yo. If the flight is full ther may not be extra (regular) meals to give to the 10mo. Just be aware of this and plan accordingly if you do not buy a seat. I would still recommend snacks anyway as then you can feed the kids when you want. We are happy to store items that need to stay cold, but heating is limited to the old "place in a hot water" method. Yes, planes have microwaves but we are NOTpermitted to heat non-catering-supplied or baby food, for safety reasons. (Not even our own food) so please do not get upset if the crew refuse this (like a lady on my last flight- eventually I had to say to her, "I am trying to do this to avoid any burns to your baby madam" I have no choice!) anything else you want to know just ask.

Some of the best times I rememer with my parents were "helping out" around the house. I vividly remember my dad teaching me how to mix cement, we were making a small brick retaining wall for the vegetable garden. I spilt more than I actually got to the wall, but it's the thought that counts right? If it's not easy to find specific "activity time" with kids, then try to integrate them into what you are doing. The thing they will remember is being with you, more than what they were doing! As for games, we enjoyed UpWords, Uno, Monopoly, Twister. ""Camping" in the backyard... only went inside for bathroom and mum would bring us food/drinks to have. Sometimes we even had a bonfire and roasted marshmallows. Was an all day affair- we'd help dad clear all the brush/kindling from the yard & set up the big fire heap, invite the other kids in the street over and have a big 'ceremony' to light it all up :D

Does anyone know if someone who'd need a bridge to have braces (but didn't get hem) would need to have same for Invisaligns? The reason I refused braces in high school was because they'd have to literally crack my hard palate and attach a bridge to screw it slowly apart over months... my sister had the same and sobbed every day for six months from the pain... if there was a way to have nicer teeth without the pain I'd defintiely consider it! The Damon system sounds interesting, I don't think I'm actually permitted to have invisalign if I want to keep my job...

I was once driving home with my (underage) cousin and her mum called and asked could I stop and pick up some wine for her (as they were going to a party & I was going to spend the evening with my cousin) THe guy told me I couldn't bring her into the liquor store because she was not my child. Even though I said she would stand in front of the counter so he could watch her, he said no. This liquor shop was in a dodgy suburb and I refused to leave her alone in the car at night, even for 5 minutes. So it seems it's not just an issue in Dubai. FYI apparently it'd have been fine if she was MY child... go figure... like parents have never bought alcohol for their kids but aunts/cousins have?!

You could try the other approach, tell her that you are so happy to be able have helped someone less fortunate that cannot afford toys for their baby, and you are glad her baby enjoys the toys as much as yours loved them! maybe she would then feel guilty and think about doing it again! what an example for her to show her own child!! :(

I broke the screen on my HP laptop (not netbook) I got a replacement screen for about $70USD, replaced it myself following instructions on YouTube. took me less than 30mins. It's a good option especially if you haven't backed up the data lately, as without the screen it might not be able to use an external monitor (as mine couldn't)

Yeah I went through T1 a few months ago, was on standby so when they told me I had another hour til I could check in, they said to go outside & come back if I wanted to eat before I checked in. Seemed at the time they were onyl letting people through with boarding cards, as I only had a standby eticket they let me in but I did see alrge families who didn't appear to all be travelling, as well. Shouldn't be an issue for him to come back out then go in again when it's time to board.

Poster mentioned a local man approached too, not happy with the mother. So let's not tar all with the same brush. I have seen many times people of nationalities who often get maligned for 'bad parenting' actually being the ones pointing out the bad parenting of others!! Agree though, hope this mum learned her lesson, a few minutes is still too much if you are not within sight of your car- even then, something can happen. Need I mention the case of the child in Australia a few years back. who was murdered in a mall toilet while her uncle was just nearby. Sad.

I think 'devastated' is a strong word to use... 'disappointed' perhaps, but devasatated? If not having sticky rice is the worst hting to happen in your kids' lives, then they're pretty lucky.... some kids don't even *have* food.... Not meaning to start anything, but perhaps a different choice of wording would be more appropriate?? In response to the original subject, i would contact them and offer the feedback, see what they do. It sounds obvious but unless you say something at the time they probably had no idea you were upset. I hate it when people smile at me all through the flight, then as they are leaving (or not at all/later with an email) complain about soemthing without having given me the chance to put it right....

Seems like he's a bit of a thrill seeker and he can go off whenever he wants and a good way to explore the uae... also, social as there are clubs around he can ride with others and make friends. My dad used to ride on his days off, a bit of time out for him and away from mum, she got a break too... everyone happy... bonus for me, trips to the beach for ice cream on weekends! :D Also, fixing/cleaning/polishing/admiring said bike/reading about bikes/talking to friends about bikes over a beer will take up some spare time too ;) edited by SkyKitty on 19/02/2012

We have been placed on last flights out of airports in first because we are such loyal customers while other just as deserving people are left stranded. It is not fair in the slightest but I suppose it is market capitalism. Don't see why it's unfair- those who spend the most money with the company are reasonably 'rewarded' for their loyalty... It'd be like me turning up at say, a hilton hotel, never having stayed at one before, and only one room for me and another guest, who happens to stay with them once a week. I am certain they would send me to another hotel/compensate me rather than deny the more frequent guest the room. It's not only airlines who overbook, but hotels, cruises and so on. Overbooking also became a necessity once airfares got cheaper. It is still cheaper to fly now (relative to yearly salary) than it was in the 50's & 60's, even with high fuel prices, security etc etc etc..

I think people are taking the fact that emergency services attended as proof of fire. From what I can gather, they went because they received frantic calls from the (mistaken) public saying there was a fire in the building. Of course they have to go and check it out if told so! Just because they went, does not mean there was a fire.

It's cloud. You can clearly see from the photo posted by another user. The 'fire'/l;ight/whatever is the same as the lighting on the other parts of the building, amplified by moisture in the air. All a non-event.

As the link says, you can't really add capacity (unless the 2 has SD slot- sorry, stopped looking at them awhile back) so then if you ran out of space... it's too bad. I'm considering an iPad, I'd probably err on the side of caution and get more than I think I'd need. I got a little netbook a couple years back with a 160GB hard drive, thought, "I'll never use that"- lo & behild- full so had to buy archive drive to store extra data/photos on.

If you can avoid it- do not take anything with you. I had them come home with me from a hotel, they took forever to get rid of. Never put your case on the floor in a hotel. Or on those carpeted stand things. That's how they got in and came home with me. They are hard (but not impossible) to get rid of. The common place is in the headboards/timber. I would get the pest control to check the bed as well, they may know the signs and what is actually making the marks.

Lucky you if they painted! They are supposed to paint individual bedrooms in shared accomm when one occupant leaves, they did not paint mine it was disgusting! had to do it myself! then again, they seem more attentive to details when it comes to flight deck accomm. We had a lovely guy down the hall from us who let us choose from all his nice new furniture when he resigned, way nicer than the 'standard' furniture the lower grades get. Only wish we'd thought to ask if he was selling the whitegoods too ;) Sadly now it seems a lot of the flight deck/engineers are going from this area, not sure why... but once the new crew village in Meydan is finished I suppose they might move all of the signle ones & engineering out to DSO perhaps?

Had it, they sent a tech, fixed... for a day or two, came back worse. Then they said to unplug it from the power point, wait, let the box reboot. Seems to work but awhile later the problem returns. Drives me nuts as I've been using the PVR and all my recorded shows are off. Have taken to watching the shows while working on the computer as it doesn't annoy me so much. I also told them they need to have TITLES on recorded shows, not just channel and date! I can't always remember what I recorded & it's a pain going through each one just to see what it is. Same goes for the tv guide. Does anyone else have Style channel not showing any info on what programs are on, just a lonk blank bar on the tv guide screen? I have to guess what's on when, and can't actually program anything to record. It occasionalyl happens with E! as well. POS box it is, think I'll get rid of it soon if they won't upgrade me to Showbox!
