That's great your dog/ones you know are awesome... but basn exist for a reason. Usally because historically dogs of those breeds are far more liekly to be aggressive than dogs of other breeds. For example, labradors. Sure any dog can attack if provoked but more often than not when you hear of attacks there's certain breeds involved... take for example lions... ones raised from cubs by humans are less likely to attack someone, but the possibility is still there because of the nature of that animal... Anyway, don't want to get into a big argument about it but as I said, bans exist for a reason.

Have bought meat there, the good thing is they label it by where it is from. The Aussie meat was really good and cheaper than back home. Really want to try that Australian gourmet meat place though, but I don't use enough to warrant buying in bulk (share house, tiny freezer)

Probably BAA (British Airports Authority), the individual airport website (Google it) and also check with the airline concerned, as they may not be operating normally even though the airport is open (Ek cancelled some flights, as the airports required airlines to reduces schedules by a certain amount on particular days)

my thought exactly- wh ywasn't it wearing a muzzle in the first place? In some places the organisers would also be held responsible for not enforcing the rules like this. Imagine if it had been a child, just dreadful to think about! It does make me wonder though, that certain breeds ar ekept here when so clearly unsuited to the climate.

Seriously warped... yeah not to forget the owner of the staffy who just WALKED AWAY!!!! I mean really, whoever it was they should be VERY ASHAMED of themselves!! In my country they could actually face charges for not having a (vicious breed) dog under control in a public place. It should be put down, once they savage another animal they get a taste for the blood, what next, a little child?!?! I wonder who took control of the dog if they just went away and left it? I feel sorry for the little girl who was holding the poodle :(

Bear in mind Captains probably get priority for villas over F/Os with families as it's in their entitlement to a Villa on becoming Captain- this may be why they're saying 'none available'- might already be allocated for other familes whose DH has just/about to upgrade & coming from apartments?

Just add to what was said earlier, I have heard over and over again from many a pilot- DO NOT come here if you have major issues in your relationship. It will almost certainly be the end of you for the reasons given. Sure there are plenty of happy families here but there are equally many miserable ones. Very sad to see tbh. And bear in mind that as a wife dependent on husband for visa, home, money etc... it is a lot harder to leave and go back home should that ever become necessary than it would in a more westernised country... From what I'm told the lifestyle is great but it can also be a bit of trap. So, many stay even though it's not ideal for them, because there's nowhere else to go, or hubby wants to keep his career without going back ten years by moving away. As others have said, do your research very very thoroughly. Look beneath the gloss- the PR & marketing is very good but there are downsides to this city and this life. Pilot's spouses don't just marry the man/woman, they marry the job it seems... Best of luck whatever you decide...

Given that there are laws in this country which allow things to be done that we as Westeners/expats might consider in a different light/way, I would say you wouldn't get very far with this type of thing. Be very careful.

I would guess it's the temp drying out her nasal membranes (dad & I used to get nose bleeds in summer) try a Fess/saline spray (kids' ones avalable) or, when they got bad dad used to putlanolin cream or vaseline up my nose (gross, but worked) Also once I got a bleed I used to run cold water over the insides of my wrists, brought my temp down fast (as an adult). for a child, I guess a cold cloth on the back of the neck would do it. Goes without saying for a 3 yo, but any 'exploring' in the nose is bound to have worse effects in the dry air here ;)

I use that 'abaya black' liquid stuff for my black clothes, no fading at all. So expensive back home, here it's very very cheap. Works great :D Use a little bit of Vanish with regular powder or liquid for whites, and I use an Aussie brand of powder for coloured clothes.

Saw a mum with a pram on the Tube last week; she got on fine but the train wasn't full yet. Later on during peak hour I saw several parents left behind as it was standing room only (very squashy) and I can imagine they would have waited quite awhile to get on. So, definitely doable but outside of peak hours for sure.

Summerdream, I agree that another parent should not intervene. However I do not agree that you would have the right to tell someone off for doing their (legally mandated) job. *If* you were in the situation you describe, that would be totally different to the one I was talkign about. THose parents were doing nothing. If you had told your DD what she needed to do, and told me that, I would be happy to let you continue- because I would know you were doing something about it. The difference being, a parent intervening and a crewmember intervening are two very different things. If it's not apparent to a crew that you've told your kids to sit down, then a good approach is to say, "I've told her to do it, can you tell her what happens if she doesn't" often works for kids because then it's two people telling them there are consequences, not just mum/dad. Sometimes they get fed up with mum & dad (I know I used to) so both telling them to sit down will work. This is the best option in my opinion, as I said before I have no problem with parents who are making and effort and can tell the difference. SOmetimes though, there's no time to give a "time out" or waiting period. In the instance I describe, I had literally seconds to get the kid to sit down as I could not get up myself (strapped in to seat for landing) Hope we can agree that the safety of the child is most important, not whose technique is "better" ;)

I don't drive so the seatbelts thing does puzzle me a bit... I'm noramlly looking on from a taxi in shock as the kids run around in the cars. Does make me wonder though- if they have an accident and the kids die, do they get charged? I remember the one about the parents without a carseat where the baby was thrown from the vahicle and died- did anything ever happen to the driver (father)?

I would far rather a parent tell me off for DOING my job than not doing my job. Perhaps I worded it badly- I did not yell or shout at the child, only used a low, non-negotiable tone of voice without any "namby pamby" possibility for the kid to think I was joking/playing around. Given that I'd been asking the child nicely through the flight to stop doing all manner of things, it was time for a change of tactic. I certainly don't ever want to see another kid with a bloodied face and no teeth, so I'll take a telling off then thanks very much

FYI I have witnessed a similar situation in the past, where crew did NOT intervene and the child knocked out all its front teeth as it hit its face on one of the armrests running down the aisle during landing. ETA: I have ADD myself and I don't think that's any excuse. My parents taught me patience to sit down even when I didn't want to, I kicked, screamed and even used to bite people when made to sit still but they persisted. Yes every child is different but I am telling you there IS a difference between "trying" and NOT trying. I know what that looks like. Talking to/interacting with/holding/playing with a child are all things I would class as "trying". Ignoring the kids the entire flight (despite requests to do otherwise) and reading a magazine while your kid aisle surfs definitely do not fall under "trying". I might not be a parent but I have had a lot of experience with my own nephews and other kids from a young age (including flying with them on my lap) so I do know a bit about trying to control a tantrum-throwing 2 year old on a plane... edited by SkyKitty on 29/01/2012 edited by SkyKitty on 29/01/2012

I said growled, not shouted, as in, didn't use a sugary sweet tone of voice. FYI if a parent is not monitoring their child on the plane and we are ABOUT TO LAND then actually no, you can not tell me off for making sure your child sits down. It's the law and the government has given crew the authority to tell passengers to sit down. CHild or not. Had I not done so I have no doubt little sweetie would have smashed her face on the bulkhead or another seat a sshe was standing in the aisle about six rows back from her parents. I do not agree they were "trying their best" as they had ignored repeated requests from the crew to keep the children seated during takeoff and landing. "trying their best" looks a lot different to keeping on reading Ahlan while the crew wrangle the child.

When my nephews were younger they used to keep undoing the seatbelts in the car. I just started pulling over and refusing to go anywhere until they put the seatbelt back on. They soon got the message! I suppose the nail appointment or mall trip is more important for some parents to bother trying this tactic. I absolutely loathe the "my kids won't listen to me" excuse when it comes to seatbelts on the plane. I simply say "well what makes you think they'll listen to a complete stranger then?" mum and dad soon magically make the child listen to them. I had a lady tell me to make her child sit down as it was running around the plane before landing. Honestly- if your kids won't listen to you, what hope do they have? Having said that, one time this kid was annoying everyone the whole flight, the parents just ignored it. As the child was jumping from seat to seat rtight before landing, I growled "Go back to your seat NOW and SIT DOWN!!!" Kid looked like it'd never been told off in it's life but sure as heck listened to me!! ;) It just makes me wonder WHO is the adult and WHO is the child. Discipline starts at home!

[i'> she says that the translation is hard for them as Arabic is their 1st language and apparently the way they structure their sentences it is not in it...If that makes sense![/i'> What a load of rubbish. I had some lovely Emirati children on my flight the other week, they had beautiful manners. They said "please" and "thank you" and when I replied "afwan" they then used "Shukhran" whenever I gave them something. They were probably 7 & 9 years old. Bratty kids come from all nationalities, as do nice ones. I refuse to accept the excuse that "it's too hard" or it "doesn't translate"- I have always tried to learn at least please and thank you in the local languages wherever I visit. Children would learn this very easily and i nfact are better at languages than most adults.

It could depend on the route too- I think for U.S. flights they have different rules about what card you can use. Sounds like you're better off going to a desk/office- then at least you can talk to someone face to face and get them to add notes to the booking about your dad.

I remember mum telling me I did a similar thing when I was about seven or eight. I'd do the blinking, plus a little sniffle here and there. She was worried it was Tourettes so took me to a doc, they said it was a phase & I'd grow out of it. Noticed that it was when I was nervous/anxious and then it got to be a bit of a habit so was hard to get out of, mum would just tap me on the shoulder and tell me I was doing it, as mostly I was totally unaware I was even blinking. Grew out of it after a couple of months, came back once or twice but totally gone by the time I was ten.

Yep, one lap child per adult, ergo solo adult must book a seat for one child & other on lap (or seats for both if preferred) to be honest it's better to book a seat if you don't want them on your lap for a long flight. I couldn't believe one woman recently, made the biggest fuss when she had to hold her own child for a flight. I get that it's a pain but it's their child- if they didn't want to hold it they should have bought a seat, Her complaint was that she should have got a basinette. (The kid was 2- FAR too big for a basinette, clearly). She wanted us to give her a basinette seat (which she couldn't use anyway) and kick another family with a small baby out of those seats!!! I mean really, move her to a seat she can't even use, and let a family with a newborn (who fits in the basinette easily) take her own seat purely because she didn't want to pay for a seat....! Sometimes you get lucky and end up with spare seats, but sometimes you don't. So yeah, booking a seat definitely a good idea as it's the only way to guarantee to have the space. Bear in mind though you can only order child/special meals for booked seats, not for lap children. Had another parent upset because they had 2 kids and a baby, 2 kid's meals arrived but they gave one to the baby (even though we stated was for the older kids) then they blamed us that there was nothing for the other child- we supply baby food jars for infants on laps. So just a tip to check this out or perhaps BYO if it might be a hassle! I know with EK it's up to the individual crewmember if they hold babies or not- I generally don't except to let mum go use the toilet- in which case I'll sit down on the seat with baby on my lap. Restraint would refer to the infant loop/extension belt, not any kind of seat, just FYI. However if you do book a seat you can bring a car seat so long as it's an approved type.

As far as I'm aware you'd need to bring a cushion/booster along yourself, they don't have that kind of stuff as it's different for each person. Chairs/buggies no problem so loig as you book in advance. Am curious about this 'disabed seating'- have never heard of such a thing- just the raising of armrests which DubaiCat mentioned. There are seats that are 'preferable' for passengers needing assistance but none specifically designed. On certain aircraft there are seats which are closest to access toilets- on the A380 for example in economy would be rows 63-68 ABC/DE as there is a larger toilet there. In Y and J we can open a divider between 2 toilets to make one big access toilet and wheel a chair right in!

You get what you pay for. My mum had a K'archer (cost about $500 maybe 6 or 7 years ago) big tank, would go for about 1.5hr constant steaming, It was amazing. We had white tiled floors with white grout (I know!!!) and they came up like new. The first part wa s hard slog, we had to use the attachments to scrub the grouting but once we had it clean, a going-over once or twice a week was enough to keep it shiny and new looking. Also had a smaller Kenwood ($80) model, good for general floor touchups etc, but no match for the K'archer.

Probably got changed so that people who spend the money actually flying on the airline earn more miles than people spending money with other companies (it works this way with the Skywards partners too- generally, you earn less with them than when spending direct with Emirates) Would also be worth looking into if Etihad offer a premium cabin bonus- with Emirates' Skywards, if you fly in Business you get 75% bonus miles on top of the base and First is 150% (this is on paid tickets only, obv but makes them add up fast) Skywards also run promotions under "miles accelerator" and certain routes get bonus miles if you fly on certain dates- it's all on the Skywards website. edited by SkyKitty on 26/01/2012
