Considering some people bring on the kitchen sink (ggrrrrrr, Dubai airport staff, pick up your game!) then 2 neatly packed laptops will be no problem at all. Bear in mind if it's a ful llfight then they should go under the seat in front if in laptop bags, not in the hatrack. Have a good flight

Yes be sure that while asking him not to do that in front of people that you don't make it sound like it's wrong... I still clearly remember my mum giving me a telling off for same when I was about 4, it gave me a hang-up about bodily functions that lasted well into my teens.... not a good feeling when you're a girl going through the normal stuff that happens at that age! :( Friends had a boy about the age described who also did a similar thing.. .though what he did was announce loudly (in church) that his parents had had s!x last night (In a VERY loud voice) all the poor parents could do was to remind him that certain things are 'family business' and are not to be talked about in public but can be asked about at home. Of course we were all creased up laughing but trying not to show it so we didn't stop him from asking questions later on...

If she's not too 'girly girl' you could try one of the pokemon games- as they have a long storyline with little tasks to do you progress through the levels so if she's the type to get a bit obssessed with a challenge they might be perfect- i once did a flight with a broken tv and played pokemon for 10 hours, barely noticed it was that long :P

Also 'The Trap Door' - clay animation show that ran 5 mins an episode, and 'Jimbo and the Jet Set' a cartoon about a plane & his airport truck friends. I also loved Samurai Pizza Cats, Robotech etc and does anyone remember "Sweet Secrets"? Like transformers but for girls. Little animals with makeup inside :D Loved the whole Lady Lovelylocks- my sister had the dolls and I used to steal them and got in so much trouble when I cut one's hair! Oh... and Jem and the Holograms!!! Coming out again on dvd soon.... yey Also, the Wuzzles. Think they re-released them about 5 years ago. edited by SkyKitty on 19/01/2012

One said no problem with fines (but hers was a renewal) while others applied no issue but were then called later on to say they had to go pay fines before the process would go any further. Seems though the average fine seems to be 3-400dhs, not in the thousand mark (yet) I *think* it's if your visa expires in 2012, they start counting from Jan 1, but don't quote me on that

Colleagues reporting good results at 'local' typing centres- around 1hr wait instead of 5 or 6 (or missing out!) at EGHQ. You can make the appointment to come back for fingerprints if you have to, at least you're registered. The expemtions from fines to NOT apply to EK employees- Gulf news this morning.... we're classified as 'government' remember! (not when it counts though... ;))

Avoid HQ- al ltickets were gone by 7am so don't bother. Highly reccommend looking at the typing centers listed on EIDA website, finding one near to you and going there. Other reports from EK staff indicate they got it all done in one hit in Karama- however now word is out that might not be an option. AM told that some ignored the "appointment" to come back later for fingerprints, went upstairs to the fingerprint, joined the queue and got it done same day. This was not me, only something heard 2nd hand so follow at your own risk. I wouldn't put stock in that 'deadline extension' article in Gulf News as they have already said exemptions don't apply. the only time I wouldn't bother is if you're already at or near the max fines- then it doesn't really matter if you wait.

Stirling- top end?? THings must've changed a bit since I was there! Duncraig isn't exactly cheap though it does depend which end you are talking about. City could also be an option, as could Bayswater or Maylands if you don't mind a 20min drive to the beach, 10mins to Karrinyup and probably 10-15 to Ozzy Park depending on traffic. Those suburbs can be a bit pricey but it all depends where you look. Closer to the train lines tend to be cheaper for obvious reasons, but not all bad.

It's a shame they can't install lockers or something for this purpose... Waterproof bags are okay for the casual swimmer but can be a problem for a surfer... unless there's such a thing as a waterproof bum bag/pack :) I remember a few years back at home one of the Perth beaches set up a mobile trailer with an attendant, it had lockers just for keys, wallets etc. You left an ID with the attendant to hire a locker. It was free and sponsored by a drink or ice cream company. Great idea and good for the busy periods.

Green-ish I get that, but there are also that element out there that are 'into' animal right's because it's "cool" (not meaning anyone here, just speaking generally) Perth Zoo has a very good elephant enclosure which has had a successful breeding program for Thai elephants, the section visible to the public is only a small part of the areas they have to walk around. I think all zoos have good and bad points but not all are 'bad' as such. And in a lot of cases the animal has more chance of surviving there than in the wild. I guess it does depend if the animal is born in captivity or not, to me that makes a difference also. I remember back in the early 90's they had dolphins in a dolphin park in Perth, it got shut down due to protests about the dolphins being kept and trained to perform. When they tried to release them, they kept coming back so eventually ended up at Underwater World (Now "AQWA") until they died.

The whale shark was clearly in a location that was NOT built for its size. Cannot really pass judgement on the Ski Dubai setup until we see it. If the enclosure is of the right size, and the penguins really are only on show (not for the public to do what you describe above- which I am sure they would, sadly) then how is it different to zoos elsewhere making 'realistic' (but not REAL) enclosures for animals. I kinda doubt San Diego is of an Antarctic climate either, so they would be coming from one artificial environment to another (even if it is very close to what they would experience) How do we know they don't donate money to charities? I find a lot of people here (here as in Dubai/UAE) are very vocal about animal rights (fair enough it's a cause close to my heart as well) but then some of them (I said SOME) can quite happily ignore the appalling human working conditions some people experience here. Where's the priorities? In my book, if the penguins are happy, well cared for by properly trained/qualified staff and not at the mercy of the public, then there might be some bigger things to worry about in Dubai...

PLaying devil's advocate here, but not ALL pet shops are this bad (Agree about the ones in DUbai though) Thrre used to be a pet shop near my home when I was younger, they pretty much only sold supplies, goldfish and small birds and the 'bigger' animals they had (cats/dogs etc) were mostly ones that had come from the local vets. As the vet didn't get much interest/foot traffic they partnered up with the pet shop to house the animals there so that the people coming in to buy their pet stuff would see them. I'm sure they had some from breeders but for us the staff were very knowledgable about the animals and made sure we knew what things they would need, how to look after tehm etc. For example, I got goldfish when I was about 11 or 12 and they made sure my parents knew that keepign them in a bowl is not good because of the low oxygenation of the water, and then they gave me a talking to that I would have to be very sure to clean the tank properly and how often- almost talked me out of it to be honest! They also gave me the little tank cleaner sponge for free to make sure I'd do it properly. But I agree with the original point, if you want a dog/cat in Dubai, go to Feline Friends or K9 Friends. Plenty of cute animals there waiting for a home. I guess sometimes people just feel sorry for the ones in pet shops and want to 'save' them- not knowing that by doing so they're putting more money in the pockets of the puppy mills etc :(

No I think the mink joke got misunderstood, as being a reference to being rich and jetting to europe all the time?? :P except Trigg said she hasn't been before. Don't worry simples I got what you meant as well- after 3 kids and first big trip I'd probably try for a fancy mink or nice jewellery as well :P Rome is lovely, shouldn't be too cold and anyway you'll just have to huddle up when you walk around to keep warm! That and a nice coffee!!! :) The Pantheon is very intersting and of course you must go throw some coins in Fontana di Trevi- but google the legend first so you know how many to throw in! And then there's the Bocca de la Verita- Mouth of Truth as seen in 'Roman Holiday' with Audrey Hepburn.

Lol very true one dept sometimes has no idea what the other is doing. E.g got an email telling me to get my ID by a certain date in 2011 (think it was July) so went and got it after much fuss. Then, manager asked why I got it when it's linked to visa renewal. *shrug* already had it so thought "whatever" next minute frantic rushing around from everyone else at work trying to get it done on days off. Kind of glad they "messed up" and told me to get one back then. I knew about this and I arrived here in 2010, not sure what everyone else was doing not to have noticed? I get that there was a lot of misinformation going around but in this place I think it's a case of better safe than sorry!!

Maybe Kinokuniya- don't recall seeing DVDs there but you never know. You could also try GAME in the UK, pretty sure they ship internationally for about 6 pounds

Thanks for the clarifying posts, ladies. THis is what I was getting at- the important part is what is/isn't going well in the relationship, and what you do about it, rather than a STATUS or if you have kids or not. If you've always celebrated occasions, then having one forgotten about can be darn hurtful- whether you're married or not. I also agree with saying how something made you FEEL, and also for asking for what you want. I found, in my past couple of relationships, simply saying to the man, "I want this" or "I don't want this..." had an immediate and amazing effect- it must be that by saying "I want this" or "I need you to do.." he would know exactly what it was that I wanted, and therefore no guessing about what it was that I might be hinting at/wanting him to mindread :D I think you've finally mentioned the word I was looking for- a relationship of COURSE is DIFFERENT once you have kids, it could be no other way... yes the level of responsibility would be very different of course, but I stand by my opinion that it doesn't make you any more committed than someone who doesn't have kids. Yes it might be easier to walk away without kids, but the level of commitment is unique to each relationship and shouldn't be measured against other people. As for kids, I'll have to take your word for it, ain't happening for me...

"of course a relationship is more meaningful if you have kids with that person" And if the woman can't have children? Would that mean her relationship is less meaningful, even if she wanted to have children?? As I have said before, and some people do not seem to grasp, in the OP's situation yes it makes a difference, but generally speaking, children or not, marriage or no, IMHO does not make one relationship "better" or more "important" than another... if one does something the other finds is a 'deal breaker' then that is the issue, not whether they are married or not, or have kids or not. I know I'll probably get more of the same but some people seem to have such a 'holier than thou' attitude about marriage/kids making things "bigger" than people who are unmarried and/or childless.... speaking for everyone here, not just my unmarried self ;)

Probably doesn't help but if they're going to expire anyway, and you're a Gold or Silver Skywards, you can try for the 'instant upgrade' onboard. Often with missed connections a seat frees up- just check that the original fare you buy allows this to be done. I believe there's also hotels and entertainment places that you can redeem with, might be worth checking out, you never know you might get a nice weekend away somewhere :)

Good that they now do it at HQ, when I got mine I had to traipse around every location on my days off under my own funds in taxis. had several different answers as to whether I actually needed one, no one seemed to know so I thought it safest to apply. Then told it's linked to visa renewal and I'll have to get a new one when my egate expires. Who knows!!!! Friend who joined company after me (pilot) got his done on joining, with nothing required from him aside from fingerprints and signature (taken and then card given X amount of days/weeks later) Still a bit ticked off about that! lol

The suggestion that a relationship is less meaningful if you're not married and/or do not have kids amuses me. Let me add, my sister's HUSBAND goes out by himself sometimes, alone, to have a meal and watch a movie, do stuff by himself. Does that make him wrong too? Yes sometimes she is left with the kids but to be fair she leaves him with them just as much. He's forgotten her birthday before, she got mad, told him she was mad, he bought her a makeup gift, all was fine. To be fair he's been married before with kids so sometimes confuses whose birthday is whose. I get the point you are trying to make but just because a man is married and has kids, does not mean he resigns the right to be an individual and have his own interests/hobbies/outings. If mine ever gave that up for me I would not allow it. Being yourself is what gives you something unique to contribute to the relationship. The same goes for the ladies too. Often though they don't get to keep that when a family comes along, this is where talking about your expectations of your roles and the change in the relationship comes into it. Sounds like from what the OP said she has done this and her husband 'gets' why she felt how she did. People are so quick to jump to the doom & gloom, something is wrong conclusion but honestly, there really are some men out there who are thick enough to not realise, and yes as humans some of them are self absorbed and unless the woman says she is not happy they think all is fine and dandy! Doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't love her or is up to no good. If you haven't I suggets go read the 5 Love Languages. It's possible her hubby is of the "working hard to provide for my family shows my love" type, not the "buy nice gifts and flowers for occasions to show my love" type.

If you read what I wrote, Derien and others, I said "THIS situation aside" (i.e., it being right before her birthday), I was commenting on the seeming attitude that going for dinner by oneself is somehow wrong... I sometimes go out, get a mani/pedi, dinner, movie whatever solo, my BF says nothing. He often does the same... why is it that some people look down on guys having "me time"? If he is going out all the time and leaving her with the kids and not returning the favour so she can do the same, then yes, that is a bit rotten in my book. But that was not what I was talking about in my previous comment.

This situation aside, some of you make it sound like having dinner out on one's own is a big crime. Yes, on her birthday it's not done, but are you really saying that if your other half went for dinner alone you'd get on a plane and leave? Really? I'd expect to be able to have the odd meal out by myself (whether with friends or not) as could he.

I can see both sides here, on the one side the crew may have been reluctant to get involved... on the other- when people have become intoxicated and have already 'had words' with other passengers, it's sometimes better to leave them be (and hopefully fall asleep) rather than have the situation escalate to verbal/physical slanging match (yes this happens often, especially with booze) and you said they had already shown "attitude" toward you. Some cabin crew unfortunately have either not picked up the skills or come from a background that discourages assertiveness so there are a minority that tend to shy away from such things. If it were me I would have a) quietly told them I know what people do under blankets and remind them of the destination and the views of said destination on 'carrying on' between unmarried couples/overt displays of public affection and the consequences of being observed in the airport under the influence. B) if necessary separate them and ask would they like to discuss with the duty manager (one step below calling the police/security) Usually, this is enough to prompt good behaviour for the rest of the flights. In future, anyone that feels something needs to be done, is welcome to come to the galley or other 'out of the way' place and voice your concerns, in most cases the crew would be happy to let you know if action has already been taken (often it's done in ways that may not be immediately apparent to some people) and if you still feel you want to take it further, ask for the Purser. If you press this point politely the crew must ask the Purser to come speak to you. You could simply say, it is nothing the crew have done wrong but you would prefer to speak to the person in charge. Most crew would respect this. Also as mentioned, there is the feedback form ("complaint form" is such a hated word by us, lol, it can also be used for GOOD things FYI.) To be honest though, the feedback forms still need to be manually entered into the system by the office staff so you are probably better off posting or emailing a letter as things sometimes do get lost or misdirected. "Standing over" the crew to ensure a report is done is not advisable as a) it comes across as aggressive and b) the Purser is not generally at liberty to show reports to passengers as the system is confidental and for crew eyes only. However, rest assured that if they say they are lodging one, they will. Many of our Pursers stay behind after work or in the hotel to fill in and send these reports. It's not always done onboard for a variety of reasons. Let us know what they say.

Did your brother bring and leave anything (object) when he came? my first thought too was that something to do with their visit has set this off. Either the precense of the baby, or like someone else said, it ahs to do with your brother. I used to be sceptical of this until I had experienced it several times myself (in hotels) perhaps there is also a scientific explanation but at the time it scared the eff out of me... If your brother has brought any object (especially an old one),leave it outside for a few nights and see if there is any change. If there is, then get rid of it. We had to do this after my father passed, 'something' was hanging around the house bothering us, it had appeared in the past but never so bad as when he died. Eventually, my mother found an enamel badge in his coin box that had belonged to his brother (who died in sudden & tragic circumstances, as did my father). Everything else that belonged to his brother had been buried with my father, this was the one item she had missed. That, and her wedding dress. We left the dress (and pin) with the cleaners for a few days and it stopped. So mum burnt her wedding dress (:() and not a problem ever again. To the sceptics, I say, be glad you've never had it happen... it is DAMN scary!!

I never read anything about a whole floor, only a 'suite'. It's jsut stupid that celebrities feel they can do whatever they want no matter the effect on everyone else. Royal families have had babies born in hospital without other people being denied access to their own kids. (I recall a photo of Princess Mary in a maternity ward with other people's kids) As for having it done at home- considering she's known for 9 months that she's going to have a kid, and that it's possible to do open heart surgery on board a cruise ship these days, it is NOT in the realms of impossibility to have had a setup at her own private home to cater for this. If the correct staff are there, what's the difference between a 'real' hospital, and a temporary set-up with all the same equipment and staff? It could even be sent to a hospital later on as a donation. The article implied it was Beyonce's staff/security bossing people around, NOT the doctors. If I were the medical staff, I would have told them where to shove it! Yes the hospital may be partly to blame but those two are not entirely blame free either, if they were not so demanding the hospital would not have been tempted to allow those arrangements. And honestly, if you were a hospital director, wouldn't the prospect of a large fee maybe get you to agree to something that in hidsight maybe wasn't a good idea? That money probaly could go to something else. I still think it's a bit OTT, imo.

You can takea stroller but it depends on how crowded the bus is. People don't seem to be very considerate of people with prams/with babies so you might have to tell them to move for you! If you use the rear doors on most buses that's closest to the pram/wheelchair spot. I woud try to avoid the Dubai Mall metro bus unless you can go when it's not busy or you really need to! just from what I have seen lately...

Whiteman Park is a fun day out, maybe not in summer (although there are kiddie pools there). They also have a bush dance program and often have concerts there too. Scitech Discovery Centre was always a favourite of mine when I was a kid. Rottnest Island, for sure. You can take a family holiday or just a day trip/weekend. Swimming, fishing and she can see the quokkas up close. Am sure there's plenty of kid play centres around, I know there was one near my old apartment. Forgotten the name of it but I have seen them (Indoor 'playground' type things with all the padding etc) Swan Valley has the giant maze and the Supa Golf- you could do this at the same time as Whiteman Park I guess. Hilarrys Boat Harbour has a family beach, waterslides, mini golf, trampolines etc etc and they do birthday parties/events. Lots of restaurants and some shopping here too. Nice for an afternoon/evening out. On special occasions and school holidays they often have fireworks and carnival rides.

In the laundry section of the supermarket you can get a washer rinse (same for dishwasher) I use one about every 3 months. Also be sure as the others have said to leave the door open. We didn't and started gettig the black mould/scum on the seal. Had to get it replaced as it started to break down. Luckily we have good maintenance so they came and did it before it broke/leaked.

It varies between aircraft types and manufacturers- that's why sometimes you'll find families getting split even though they checked in onlien together, an aircraft could be swapped/changed last minute. Newer aircraft have extra masks at bassinette rows, so there would usually be one provided for each adult in that row plus one for each basinette in the row, plus 1/2 extras for backups/crew use. If you're not sitting in a row designed to hold babies then if you have 2 kids, yes it's possible to be split up. For example, if there's a row of four seats, with 2 couples each with more than one lap child- one parent would likely be split and put in front/behind or across the aisle. Couldn't give a definite answer though, as I said it can vary between airlines, and even between aircraft of the same type if they are built in different years or different operators. For example, my previous company had 737s but on one infants could only be sat on the left side of the aicraft, in the other it could be one infant per row. This is why many airlines don't allow online check-in for people with lap infants.
