I'm not sure how they handle it in primary school at my son's school. He is advanced for his age, he's in a KG1, 2 kids were rewarded at the end of the yr ceremony, one was the youngest in class who was really behind & another kid who didn't speak a word in English before joining school. My child was assessed differently than other kids in his class, he read a book during the assessment, counted to one hundred & was asked to recognise double digit numbers, other kids were assessed based on what they covered during the academic year which was basic colours, basic phonics & recognising numbers to 10, he wasn't rewarded for over achievement. I know my son didn't put any effort at school & he didn't deserve a reward other than the stars & stickers his teacher used to give him during class for good behaviour ;)

What work is she going to do all day in a 2 bedrooms apt? We live in a huge 4 bedrooms apt , our maid works for a max of 6 hrs per day! She spends the evening ironing or using FB in the spare living room, she takes 2 hrs break during the day to nap & shower. Where do you expect her to change? In the bathroom? Or are you going to kick out your 3 kids of the room to change? Where will she go when the kids are sleeping? Or do you expect her to go to bed when your kids do? What about privacy & personal space? I'm sorry but your home arrangement is not suitable for a live in maid, & the law is clear you need a maid's room to hire a maid! She agreed on those terms to work as a maid, I don't understand how this is similar to Indians or Pakistanis sharing accommodation? He's many Filipinas who work for hair saloons & beauty centres share rooms, but it is part of their employment contract : shared accommodations , but it is not the same with maids - the contract is clear it says maid should have her own room

I used to work for an insurance company, unless the dr himself have details of your card & is prescribing meds using your details, no one else can use your details without the insurance card. The dr have the insurance form & in his system there is the insurance card details, some clinics even take a copy of the insurance card. You can easily track the dr clinic through the pharmacy who claimed that you had the prescription few months back, they should have the copy of the dr's prescription especially if it's a controlled med. We had similar cases with drs who used to prescribe meds for their friends using other patients cards details, unfortunately not all pharmacies ask for the insurance card with prescriptions . Or as pp mentioned it could be a system error from the pharmacy. I'd go back to the pharmacy & request a copy of the prescription

Who issued the prescription? I'd track the dr who prescribed the medicine & take it from there. I'd report the doctor not the person. Check with your insurer, they should have record of the clinic name

A gold coin (depends on the amount of money, I think 1 coin is AED 1000, it is sold by gold weight), it's nicer than money but it still have similar value. When we got married our turkish partners gave us a turkish gold coin.

http://www.hsperson.com/pages/test_child.htm There is this test, try it :) I read the book & it made lots of sense, there is also a book called Raising Your Spirited Child By Mary Sheedy, it has several chapters about sensitive children. I'm not sure about your DD, but my son is sensitive to many other things, including food, noise, strangers like hair dresser touching him & so on. It does get better, try not to worry hun, I know it's easier said than done, I've been there xx edited by wickedangel_78 on 17/06/2014

Did you get the pink slip for the residency? This is great! She can't go to a drive to Oman, she needs a visa to Oman as she needs to enter Oman then exit for the visa run, but it is not an issue to fly to Oman & return on the same day as she doesnt get her passport stamped in Oman if she travels by airplane. If you dont have the residency slip she will have to leave to Kish only as it's the only place around that doesnt need a visa for entry & she will have to stay for 2-3 days until the visa is issued, but in your case it is not required as you already have the entry permit.

I dont even know what to write without sounding rude! I lost my uncle & his pregnant wife in the stupid war in syria! We call MIL twice or 3 times per week & I keep in touch with SIL almost everyday using skype or fb. We do get huge phone bills, but who cares! I bet he didn't see his mum for months if not for years, ask your friend to grow up! The thread title is so offensive btw. I have 1 child, my life is dedicated to my son, if I were in a similar situation & my DIL complains about phone calls I'd be heart broken. Have some empathy! Does she watch the news? Thousands are dying in those wars! edited by wickedangel_78 on 17/06/2014

As per the law: Min wage is 1500 Vacation: 15 days paid leave per year 1 day off per week It doesn't state anything about working hours, in the contract you sign with the Philippines embassy it states 8 hrs of rest per day & a private room for the maid , but if you hire her locally you don't sign this contract until you send her for vacation

Hi Redrec I can't answer from the nursery point of view but the reason I sent my children to big school for FS1 was because it was harder to get a place if waiting for FS2. I know a couple of people who were offered places for FS1 and decided to stay in nursery for another year and ended up not getting a place for FS2. If that could be the case for your little one then it might make the decision for you. This! Another reason for us for going to school rather than nursery is preparing him for school & getting used to the big school environment. I have a very sensitive child, it took him 3 months to settle although he was one of the oldest children in class (November baby) I'm not sure about other schools but at my son's school they are very flexible with KG1 students, we don't send him everyday, we don't always send him at 7.50 am, if he doesn't get enough sleep he goes to school at almost 9 am. Now the weather is too hot, we have the option to keep him at home if we want, he doesn't have to go until the end of school term which is 26th of this month. As for a certificate of completion KG1/ FS1 is not a requirement to join KG2/ FS2 here, if there is a place at school & your child passes the entry test your child will be accepted without a KG1 certificate. I might be wrong but nurseries are not regulated by the minstry of education, they are regulated by the ministry of social affairs. So their certificate is not recognised by schools I guess

DS was the same at that age, after attending classes for almost 2 yrs at kidville I ended up crying like a baby as I couldn't take it anymore loool. Anyways when he was 3 they advised me to leave & see how it goes, he cried for few mins at 1st & refused to join in, they didn't pressure him, after 3 classes of attending alone he was fine, but he was still a pain with strangers, hiding his face behind me, refusing to play with kids he didn't know, getting overwhelmed in crowded places, & so on He started school in sept last year, it took him 3 months of crying on & off, not joining in, talking to his teachers only.. Now he is 4.5 yrs, he is so outgoing, he makes friends easily, he talks to adults, shares his opinion openly, orders his own food ... School had a very positive influence on him, I explained his traits to them, he is advanced for his age, & cautious by nature,I told them clearly that academics is not important for us, we wanted them to work on his social anxiety. He didn't make friends until the end of the 2nd semester, but it was a huge step forward. At the age of 2 we used to go out almost everyday, attend toddlers classes, go to parks & play areas, but we used to choose classes with small number of kids & we only went to play areas on weekdays & we avoided weekends. I also met new mums when he was 3 & I started to arrange small play dates. We didn't pressure hi. Or force him to play with other kids, when he used to get overwhelmed I used to step in & join the kids in playing. I spent several toddlers classes carrying him & looking from the window, or sitting with him in the corner to watch the other kids. He is also a perfectionist by nature, he hated doing something wrong, this is why he didn't act spontaneously, now he is older he is more confident with his physical abilities, he's not scared anymore to try new activities He was also more interested in older children, his best friend is 4 yrs older than him, but now he is much better with younger kids as he knows how to lead them ;) She is still young, I know it is difficult especially when you compare her to other children her age. It might take some time by I think she will be fine when she is older xx

Juice diet is not a faddy diet, it is a short term detox to give the system a break & load it with vitamins & nutrients, it is a way to give the body a kick & boost the metabolism, it is not a long term diet. I'm a health coach, we recommend it for those who are stuck with the last 2-3 kgs, it is not a diet for those who are overweight or those who eat crappy diets It's good before or after holidays especially when a healthy diet is out of the window. Processed cereals are not healthy, they have loads of added **** I didn't recommend a juice diet only, I recommended a detox with juices, smoothies, raw veggies & healthy fats + omega 3 supplement in addition to low GI fruits , it is balanced, no limited quantities or starvation, it helps in cleansing the liver & balancing insulin in blood

A green juice or smoothie. Juice: - Spinach, celery, cucumber, pineapple, 1/4 ginger - watercress, green apple, 1/2 orange, wheatgrass (you can use powder) You can blend the juice with 1/4 avocado - beets, carrots, 1 slice of pineapple , ginger & baby spinach Smoothies: - almond or coconut milk + greens (whatever you have), low GI fruit & some nuts/ seeds. I add flaxseeds, chia or hemp If you feel hungry eat some raw veggies like lettuce, cucumber, bell peppers 1 he after drinking the juice

A detox with veggie juices & low GI fruits + green salads. Start your day with hot lemon & tiny bit of honey. Avoid dairy as it causes bloating . Fill a jug with filtered water add some ginger slices, cucumber slices, lemon & mint leaves, leave it overnight in the fridge & drink from it throughout the day. Drink herbal & green tea at least 2-3 times a day, take a good omega 3 supplement. You can add 1 avocado per week to your diet for healthy fats & few nuts. Flaxseeds & chia in your salads are loaded with nutrition & they help in weight loss. Add ACV to salads in helps for weight loss. Good luck

Thanks for your ideas. I have already been to quite a few indoor play areas already but I will try Little Explorers. A 3 yr old and 1 yr old are too young to leave on their own so I want to find activities that I can do with them, I was hoping for a few 'out of the box' ideas if there are any! Maybe watching the planes at the airport?? Is this possible and from where? Catching the Metro to something for young kids - suggestions? Little explorers is not a play area, well it is but not similar to the normal ones with the slides & so on, it has a water play area, sounds & lights, kids construction site, & so on. In addition to dancing to songs with action like hokey pokey Kidville do toddlers classes for siblings with parentd it includes circle time, music, dance, free play & some sort of arts & crafts it's from 6 months + , the class is called wiggle & giggle together I think. I honestly cant think of anything creative in this heat other than water parks, the beach & malls, when the weather is good we used to go for bike riding, boats trips, parks, zoo, edited by wickedangel_78 on 09/06/2014

If they enter on a visit/ tourism visa they have to exit, there was a new rule in Dec 2013, you cant exchange visa or even issue the residency if they are here in a visit or tourism visa. If you do all the paper work here & they enter using the residency pink visa, they have 60 days from the date of entry to stamp the visa on passport, they dont need to exit in that case

Cut out dairy & gluten from your diet, take a good multivit, glucosamine, fish oil / omega 3, add flaxseed, chia seeds, ginger, pineapple to your diet & see how it goes. My dad is suffering from arthritis he is 64, he was able to manage it by changing his diet, he tried many painkillers but they were not useful on the long run, in addition to arthritis he also suffers from several back issues, all drs he saw told him that he needed surgery as he was in severe pain. The change in his diet really helped

Cutting won't help or solve the issue, I have fine hair, it used to fall a lot then I was told by my hair dresser that black hair dye is a major cause of hair fall. How is your diet? Do you take any vitamins? Water here is also a major cause of hair fall, get a shower filter it might help. Since I started to eat more leafy veggies, nuts & seeds, in addition to stopping the black hair dye my hair doesn't fall anymore. As for oils, you can try coconut oil mixed with castor oil I was told it helps in re growing the lost hair.

If you hired a nanny, I wouldn't worry too much, she will know what to do and how to do it. If you are talking about your maid minding your baby, all of the below. This! Maids are not nannies, I'm on maid number 4, all were "loving" but I never ever used my maids as babysitters, my maid plays with my son at home when I'm around, I also leave him with her in play areas once or twice a week, but I will never leave him at home with her. If I decide to work (not anytime soon) I will hire a qualified part time nanny

I understand what Marroush is trying to say- it's a cultural/ religious thing, in Islam dating is not acceptable, you can see a guy under the supervision of family before the official engagement to see if he's the right one. If he seems to be the right person the engagement goes on, sometimes the engagement doesn't work out & they separate It is not a bad thing, I went for the "business" way of getting married, I've been happily married for 6 years & we have a 4 yrs old kid. I dated earlier but my choice was wrong, I'm not saying dating is wrong, we all come from different cultures & beliefs, within the same culture it is not always the same, my 2 brothers dated for yrs before they got married, but it didn't work for me, when I went for the traditional way it went great.

Seriously? I'm born here & I've been living in Sharjah for 35 yrs! It is safer than dubai, less multicultural, the majority of the residence in main areas like Buhairah, al wahda street & Qasba are Arab expats, other than families you don't see "indopak" In parks or Qasba or Buhairah unless it is the weekend which is the same in Dubai Mall! In Majaz water front single men are not allowed to enter the area, security is all over the place & around entrances. As for single "indopaks" (hate this word) you see them in Rola or close to mega mall which is similar to karama, Deira or naïf street in dubai. As for safety I go back home alone at 12-1 am some nights with no issues, police cars are always around in main streets & all buildings have security guards in them, I never ever had a harassment incidence here. & guess what I am good looking & I wasn't covered up in my twenties. Did you ever visit areas with construction in Dubai to compare? It is all the same, construction builder in Dubai are not more cultured than the ones in Sharjah loooool Most buildings have CCTV in the elevators & parking lots, a good looking westerner wearing a suit can be a pervert, not all workers are. Perverts are not related to a certain race or nationality, if you really believe this, I really feel sorry for you. Yes this is one of the most safe countries in the world, with low crime rates, we are not misinformed or he media tries to hide facts, what we hear or read here is nothing compared to many other more developed countries. I grew up here, I have loads of friends & family, we complain about the weather, rent, prices that are going up but safety? Never

Uniform is optional, whatever you find right for house work My 1st maid was ok, she was a grump but she did a great job, never complained or had unreasonable requirements but her dad "died" after 8 months of service & we sent her home for 2 weeks on our own expense, then she had a "scholarship" few months before the end of her 2nd year & according to her she might lose it if she doesn't travel immediately. It seems that almost all philipina maids have a dying mum or dad & many of them get a free scholarship during their service! 2nd maid was horrible, her sister used to work in Lebanon, she called me & asked me why our maid is not allowed friends at home! She complained about us when I refused to give her 2 days break saying that we don't feed her & she works for too long, turned out that the agency taught her to say so as hey had another employer ready for her. When I looked into her things before sending her back to the agency I found appalling babydolls & lingerie in her bag, why does a house maid need those? She also used to stop by shops to ask about salaries Our last maid was ok when it comes to house work but she was a grump, she used to complain about anything & everything, each & everytime she used to go out she used to come up with stories. In sept this year I asked her if she wanted to renew after coming back from vacation in April, she said yes, she got 2 raises in less than 2 yrs. I booked for 2 ways ticket for her when she went, she sent me a SMS saying that she "missed" her plane, I was going through a miscarriage & wasn't in a mood to handle her lies, so I told her clearly to fix her own mess & to pay for a new ticket if it's needed. Since that day she stopped answering our calls, I bet she met someone on the airplanes who told her that she can get so & so if she finds another employer, but I don't think she knows about bans. She was a drama queen, 2 weeks after we hired her she asked me to take her back to the agency when I asked her nicely to clean her room, as I already returned a maid before her I told her clearly that if she didn't want to work for us she can go back home as I knew we miss lose the agency fee anyway. I have her 2 days to decide & she decided to stay. In December last year she came up with a story she told us that she has an aunt who works her but she never told us about that aunt, that aunt got beaten & thrown in the desert with no water or food by her local employer after 5 yrs of service & now she is scared to continue working in the country as we might treat her in the same way! I never heard about her aunt although she was with us for 1.5 yrs at that time. Most maids from the Philippines have loads of expectations, they have their own "rules". & as they know how expensive it is to process their visa, they expect their employer to work by their rules. This is my experience, I vowed never to hire from this nationality anymore. Our current maid started in March, I was planning to have 2 maids, but she didn't complain when I told her that our old maid is not coming back or asked if we are hiring another maid. She is slow, I mean really slow for a house maid, but it doesn't bother me edited by wickedangel_78 on 30/05/2014

For dining out - we give her a choice to either have food with us or take money & go to the food court, all our maids preferred the food court. Or I take the maid to food court with my kid, order food for both of them, once they are done, I take then to the play area, then we dine in peace, but my kid is picky with food & he is not keen on eating in restaurants, so for us it so easier to buy them food from the food court. When we order takeouts we order for her even if she had her food, she can eat it later or next day, I don't feel comfy to order food for us without ordering for her. I pay for clothes uniform & clothes for going out, she goes out with us & I like her to be presentable, I buy from H&M or splash sometimes from max for our maid. She also takes from my clothes I don't need, I'm a bit slimmer than her but they still fit, they are expensive nice clothes, I don't force them on her, I ask her if she wants them, if not I put them in charity box I think the contract is the one you sign with Philippines government not the one in immigration, so it might be different for other nationalities. Our current maid is from the Nipal, not sure about her contract as we didn't process her visa yet. All my previous maids were from the Philippines (never again looool) edited by wickedangel_78 on 30/05/2014 edited by wickedangel_78 on 30/05/2014

Agree with UM - our maid gets 2 hours break at around 3 pm, she goes to her room for shower & nap. But she gets 30 mins in the morning for breakfast, another 30 mins for lunch at 2 , & another break for dinner in the evening. I don't expect her to just sit in her room & do nothing, if she has nothing to do, she sits in my kids playroom watching tv or using my kids iPad. In our house we don't believe in fix working hours, some days she doesn't work more than 4 hrs a day, other days she needs over 10 hrs to finish. Weekends there is no house works, she doesn't go out on her own yet as she's new & she still doesn't know anyone, she will get a day off without sleeping out (our house rule) when she asks for it. I am at home most all day, I know the amount of work she does during the day, what I can finish in 15 mins she needs an hr to finish it. I hired a part time maid when our maid went to Kish for visa change, the girl cleaned all our 4 bedrooms huge apt in 5 hrs, our maid needs a whole week to finish all that work. The girl is not efficient , I am paying loads for hiring her, I am responsible of loading the dishwasher, arranging closets & wardrobes, loading the washing machine & dryer as she is not capable yet of doing all this in addition to cleaning the house, she is lazy by nature, the house will be in a mess if I give her 8 hrs to work. If I'm lenient with her from the start it will become a habit. I don't want to change her, she is very sweet & nice with a big smile on her face all day, unlike our previous "efficient" maid who was a grump & always complaining. She gets 9 hrs of sleep sometimes 10.

Marykar- it's not the same for everyone, our maid doesn't have working hours, as I mentioned earlier she is lazy, what our previous maid used to finish in 5 hrs, our current maid needs 10 hours to finish! She has tasks, but she doesn't always go by schedule, I live in a 4 bedroom apt & I'm picky when it comes to cleaning the house, we have 15 doors at home! She needs 2 days to clean them! I do help with house work but I'm a SAHM & I expect house work to be done to a certain standard. I don't feel comfy with a maid preparing my breakfast or my husband's breakfast, we prepare our own breakfast. As for baby sitting it's a trust issue, there are many horrible stories about maids & kids, my friend's maid ran away leaving a baby & 2 twin toddlers unsupervised when she was at work. But most of my friends use their maids for babysitting & they don't pay extra. As for the law, I think the contract says 8 hours of rest or something similar, 1 day off & 1 months paid leave with ticket per year. I think it also says a private room for the maid.

I'm kind of strict, but in a reasonable way, if things are not done on time & she panics I tell her it's fine & she can finish it in the evening or next day but I clearly tell her that next time she should plan her time in a better way. I have a new maid, she's the laziest maid I've ever had looool. But she is nice & sweet compared to the other maids I had. I don't give food allowance, our kitchen is full of everything, I also buy her noodles & frozen food which we don't eat. When we go for grocery shopping I ask her if she needs anything extra from what we buy. I cook for everyone, but she's free to cook if she doesn't like what we're having I pay for toiletries (she has access to our stock) & phone calls. We don't use a maid as a babysitter, I never left a maid alone with my kid at home. Other than an hour or 2 in a play area, I'm always around. If we have to leave him at night, I have family members who are ready to stay with him at home. She doesn't have much responsibility when it comes to my boy, he is my responsibility as in giving him a bath, preparing his food, putting him in bed, etc. she helps sometimes when I'm occupied in something like cooking or getting dressed I don't like small talks or gossips, our previous maid was obsessed with other maids & madams. I clearly told the new girl that I don't like yo head about others personal lives & I don't like it when our maid speaks about us to anyone.

My 4 yrs old is not bothered about electronic games. He was 9 months when I gave him my iPhone to play with loool, at 18 months I bought him an iPad, at the age of 2.5 yrs the iPad became part of the furniture ;) A box, glitter, glue, measuring tape, old receipts, keys, locks, sample of lotions & creams, anything that is not labeled as toy is more interesting to him than a tablet or a game console. He learned a lot from the iPad apps, but he also spent loads of time in toddlers & mummies classes, I used to take him out almost everyday & I decided not to send him to nursery before school. His iPad, leappad, our Xbox & tv are always around, we don't limit their use but he is not bothered, he rarely touches any of those, he invents new games & toys all the time. At his school they use iPads from KG1 but at home he loves to write & to read paper books. IMO balance is the key.
