Good point about the embassy! For now he's happier to stay in his hotel in a quiet unaffected area than run the gauntlet of traveling through the heavily populated poor areas that he'd need to cross to get to the airport. Not only that, the drivers arranged by the client are striking and there's no other safe way to travel. Virgin, BA and EK are still flying there so it's not critical yet. He's not overly concerned so ii guess I should relax a bit :)

Hi SD, like others have said I would want my husband to come back immediately, but I know it is not always possible. In your situation I would make sure that firstly your husband's Embassy or Consulate in Nigeria is aware that they have a national in that specific hotel, should they need to evacuate and I would also ask them to advise you on what to do for now. Stay strong.

Don't worry doll. Our airline is still sending us to Lagos. We would be stopped from going if the company thought there was any danger to us. We are never allowed to leave the hotel as a rule in Lagos anyway. You husband will be fine. I'll let you know if we get any information that changes the situation although Im sure your husbands company will do the same!

My husband worked in Port Harcourt for many years and I know how awful and worried you will feel right now. The best thing he can do is to sit tight and do what his company say. The client will have experience and will look after you husband. I hope he gets home to you very quickly!

Oh, SD, I do hope your OH gets out soon. Not to be scare-mongering, but this unrest has been going on for a while, hasn't it? OTOH, you can't really tell much from news reports. Anyone would have thought that Athens was full of violent demonstrators before Christmas, but in fact our friends found that everything was normal apart from in the area round Syntagma Square, where the Greek Parliament buildings are.

TBH BM, I don't know how evacuation is handled. At the moment he's under the care of the client. They know where he is and have said they will make the necessary arrangements to get him out of needs be.

I've just spoken to him and he's ok. He's spoken to the client who's advised him that his hotel, out of the main part of the city is the safest place to be. I think a meeting will be held to put a plan in place if it does all go t**s up, but they expect it to be resolved quickly. They also said the airport is closed which seems to be unlikely given that EK sent their morning flight to Lagos out an hour ago (5 hours late but it's still en route). Virgin and BA haven't cancelled their flights yet either. all 3 airlines have been operating this week. I'm hoping he's confident for good reason but I'll certainly be following the news very closely. Thanks for all your support Ladies.

I know certain airlines have suspended flights as they cannot get the aircraft turned around/fuelled once they arrive.... :/ So if he can get to say Joburg or another nearby big city, there'd prob be less hassle. Either way, I'd be calling your embassy/foreign office for advice. Hope all goes well.

Does the government actions have anything to do with the Muslim terrorists attacks on christians of late? there has been real bloodshed there in past weeks with churches attacked on Christmas day and many dead edited by derien on 11/01/2012 I was wondering the same thing. Unfortunately there is a famous singer there who is inciting this anger and violence, the people are listening to him. I was listening to a report on French News the other day and they interviewed a spokesman for the Government in the South of Nigeria who pretty much said that they were about to take matters into their own hands to stop the Muslim ( North). Well, as Nigeria is split between north and south with the major ports and oil being in the Christian south ( I beleive), maybe this is what they meant by punishment ?

I think the people are just trying to bring the main cities to a standstill and don't really want violence. I believe the police are the ones shooting, but they are isolated incidents (1 or 2). It's all about the money. If their fuel prices have risen, then what will happen if the STRAIGHTS closed....prices will soar.

There are terrorist acts going on here and there, nothing in Lagos where he is. However, on 2st Jan the govt announced that they wre removing the subsidy on fuel, effectively doubling the price of petrol. The govt are saying that they will spend the money saved on healthcare, schooling and sorting out the power (elec) but the people generally believe the money will end up in the pockets of the allegedly corrupt govt. Nationwide strikes and protests were started on monday and there seems to be no end in sight. there have been a few people killed. DH is starting his 3rd day confined to his hotel. As he can't ge to the office and work I can't understand why his company aren't pulling him out while they still can. The FCO says that [i'>the declared aim of the strike is to close all offices, airports and seaports, banks, markets and petrol stations. [/i'> People were being advised to stock up on food, water and fuel ahead of the action. DH has heard that "they" are likely to disrupt mobile and internet services which is sending me into a frenzy. At the momnt we IM on Skype and when I see him come online I know he's ok. I just want him out of there but want to know if anyone else knows more than me and can maybe tell me I'm being melodramatic.

If so what's your feeling about it? Are they going to sit it out or get out? DH is confined to his hotel in Lagos and I can't understand why he's not being sent out :(
