Hi,

My partner has been offered a role in Qatar and we are in the process of weighing up our options to decide to go or not. We'd both really like to but have some reservations. We are both British but he is white and I'm mixed race (black Caribbean and British). We live in London at the moment which is very diverse and multi cultural so don't ever have any issues in that sense but I wondered if it would be an issue or frowned upon in the Middle East? Can anyone give an advice on this?

We've been engaged for our while and our wedding is booked for next year but we would obviously bring the wedding forward if we agree to the move. Do you know if you have to be married for certain length of time before being able to cohabit in Qatar?

Any advice welcome!

Thank you RachelA and kiwispiers - very helpful! Definitely puts my mind at ease. Now I just need to think about my new wardrobe if we end up coming!

I agree, Doha is full of mixed race and mixed nationality couples. Not an issue at all. You may get some blatant questions by supermarket checkout workers etc if you have children and they look very different to you, but in an innocently ignorant way. My son is very blonde, blue eyed and fair and I am olive skinned with very dark hair and eyes and it seems to blow their mind sometimes.

Hi RhiRhi131, Neither issue (mixed race or newlyweds) should be a problem. Qatar is in fact also a very diverse and multicultural place, with expats (from all over the world) outnumbering locals). Mixed race/mixed ethnicity couples are not at all uncommon. I know plenty of couples who came to Qatar within weeks - or even days - of getting married. There's no time requirement. Just make sure to have the necessary paperwork ready.
