Insurance in Qatar for Expatriates

Qatar has introduced a new law whereby all residents, nationals and non nationals, will be required to have medical insurance. This law has already come into effect and all white collar non-national workers will have to have medical insurance from an approved provider by the first quarter of 2015. Blue collar workers have until the end of 2015 to comply with the new law and obtain medical insurance.

Approved insurers will have to have an office in Qatar - regardless of their international reach. Even the top insurers in the world will have to have an office in Qatar (such as BUPA and AXA). Nationals will continue to receive medical coverage from the government.

Dr Faleh Mohamed Hussein Ali, assistant secretary general for policy affairs at the Supreme Council of Health, said: “The National Health Insurance Scheme is not designed to cut costs or benefits. On the contrary, its background is the goal to ensure that everyone living in Qatar – both nationals and non-nationals – have the basic minimum health care services available to them.”

He has also assured non-nationals that insurance policies will be competitively priced and there will be a choice of private and public hospitals.

Car insurance can vary between 5% and 8% which depends entirely on the cost of your car. Cars generally built for speed may be black listed. You can still get insurance for these type of cars but at a cost.

House hold insurance is advisable for those who have valuable house hold goods and items. Theft is rare but does occur.

Private medical insurance is available and in most cases is provided by the employees sponsor.
