I'm in that sort of mood too Rachel. I think it's Christmas getting to me :) However, Carolina did mean soldiers to the exclusion of other troops - she clarified that point. Of course, she has the right to just send her respects or whatever to soldiers on their own. I however, also have the right to get annoyed about it on a personal level. I realise my post might have been seen as an attack on Carolina (and Caroline, I apologise, I didn't mean it that way) - when I mentioned 'support for soldiers only' I was talking about the initial post. I still have an issue on the extent to which that post misrepresents the situation. The money raised does not only go to soldiers and it specifically goes to British soldiers. Elaborating on your example, if I say 'Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadians' I am only saying that to the Candians. That's fine and I would have no objection to it as that festival is specific to people from a certain country. However, narrow it down to exclude some people. 'Happy Thanksgiving to all white Canadians' would certainly be offensive to most people. 'Happy Thanksgiving to people from Toronto' would probably be ok. There's a line there somewhere and it's at an individual level where the offence kicks in. I personally find it irritating (offensive might be too strong a word) to have soldiers singled out of all the troops that serve overseas and risk their lives for their country. Others wouldn't. Others would also think this entire discussion pedantic. Everyone's different which is what makes the world go round :)

I tried to stay out of this, but I just can't help myself. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with honoring soldiers. And to mention "soldiers" does not mean that others are excluded - it just means that someone is choosing, in this moment, to honor soldiers. What about all of the people who pay their respect to teachers, without specifically mentioning all of the other people who support our kids' education (the TAs, the Admin staff, the custodial staff, the bus drivers, etc...) or people who choose to honor firemen, or volunteers, or whatever. While we're at it, should we NOT say "Merry Christmas" or "Eid Mubarak" or "Happy Chanukah" because by singling out one faith's celebration we are thereby excluding everyone who is of a different faith? What about the posts wishing Americans and/or Canadians a Happy Thanksgiving? I am all for inclusivity, but this does not mean that particular individuals or traditions should therefore not be honored. Rant over. Sorry, I'm just in that kind of a mood... :\:

In which case Carolina, if you're specifically excluding non-soldiers, it's perfectly fair for me to get annoyed by a post that calls for support for soldiers only. Based on your post, I can only assume that the intention was to only ask for soldiers to be supported. Intention is even worse the the ignorance I attributed to it in the first place. The comment re British was simply in reference to the use of the word 'our' in the original post and the fact that the charities suggested do not support 'our' 'soldiers' in the wider sense but specifically British troups. (I'm British btw - don't see how my nationality makes a difference to the point). Anyway, I realise this isn't the biggest deal. It was just an observation on something that was niggling me. If I argue any more the thread will get pulled :)

It's not pedantry (well maybe a little with the 'soldiers' comment, but seriously a lot of people seem to think it's only soldiers, see Carolina's post!). It's an observation that it's a very UK centric post on what is in theory a non-UK centric board. That said, of course my thoughts are with my friends and family and all others currently serving oversas and not just because it's Christmas! I know it is not only soldiers, but I chose, at this time, to wish them a Merry Christmas. All soldiers, the world over. And I am not British.

Merry Christmas to all soldiers who are serving, especially to those who can't be with their families at this time. Stay safe.

I'm British and the majority of my family are currently serving and have previously served in the forces...... Regardless of the points raised, surely as long as money is raised to support the troops, this is what counts...... More thought should be put in to supporting these causes instead of being pedantic about such titles. Merry Christmas to everyone and please spare a thought for all the Hero's who can't be with their families at this special time...xxx

I've been staring at this post for a few days getting slightly irritated by the title! You are aware that there are people in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis who aren't soldiers, aren't you? British Legion and SSAFA support all servicement not just soldiers. Also, whilst I am British, I would guess that a significant minority if not the majority of the posters on this forum aren't. So why 'our soldiers'?
