Hi again :)

I'm wondering about prices for utilities at The Pearl, since most of the flats we have found don't include it in the rent, I heard for a 136sqm for two people the electricity and gas should be something around 300-500 per month. But I would like to know real examples, how much do you pay?

And also how about internet and cable? I heard so far the only option for cable at the pearl is OSN, I tried to check online how much is for the premium package but couldn't find it, what's your experience with it? I know the Mozaic TV from Qtel is 700 per month with the highest speed for the internet, the cable and the land line, but don't know when is going to be available there.

And I don't know if OSN includes the internet, or do you go with another company for that? And how much would that be?

Thanks in advance!

Just an update on the bills saga...DH finally paid the water/elec bill after 13 months of living here...had to pester our agents, LS, to get the bill though...it was only an estimated bill however (came to around 1,000 rials - LL owed us about 450 rials for before we moved in, which he sent to us - amazing!). Got an estimated Qatar Cool bill too which showed that the meter readings had not advanced since we moved in, so marched down to the QC office (they have 2 on The Pearl - Porto Arabia 1 - in Commercial Bank and also in Building 8). Managed to catch some on the Managers in a meeting, so I had a little word about their billing system on The Pearl being woefully inefficient. ''Apparently'', the billing system on The Pearl will be sorted out in early 2013 and they said that they had problems in my building ( and in 1 other) in gaining access to read the meters??!! They did send someone round to check my meter the next day and there was a problem with it and it had stopped recording. So we not paying the estimated bill at the mo, until an average reading can be taken from the meter over the next quarter. The estimated bill was for over 6,000 rials...our amount owed was approx 2,000 rials, so we are right in thinking that the LL pays the majority of it. What a palarva!

Then it seems that the standing charge for Qatar Cool is responsibility of the LL, I was told the same. I asked the real state agent about all this, she said that we can ask the LL to request the bill for Qatar Cool every 3 months and pay to him directly. Of course this is because in our case the contract is signed only between us and the LL, no agency involved. At least is an option to avoid highest amounts at the end of the contract. Regarding water & electricity, you can pay that at the KAHRAMAA office at City Center (Qatar General Electricity & Water Co.), phone is 991, and I think if you go there and ask to register, you should be able to pay the bills monthly online and keep the receipts for the LL, it may be worth asking. She mentioned that water & electricity is really cheap, and said that for a penthouse of 800sqm annually is around 3000QAR. Being conservatives we can say that for utilities at the pearl one should calculate something around 1,150QAR p/m for a 1B flat with 2 people (250 internet, 200 cable, 650 Qatar Cool, 50 water & electricity). More if you add the land line. HTH edited by loloatdoha on 15/08/2012

Thanks for the info loloatdoha...DH had been down to the Qatar Cool office a few months ago and was told we didn't have to pay the standing charge and that the LL pays that - am hoping that it is really the case after reading Jonners post - maybe it depends which tower you are in - have no idea, but will let you all know when we finally get a bill/pay the bill! ....Marycatherine - we don't have an ''on demand'' decoder, but we had to buy the one here - I checked the receipt, so I know we def. paid it.....just asked DH and he seems to think this rule is only for The Pearl - you can rent the box outside The Pearl...

In all my years with OSN in two different countries and 5 different residences, I never paid for the decoder - unless the one you are referring to is the "on demand" one. I'm not familiar with that box so perhaps it does cost that much?

Just bear in mind that pricing and charging can be a bit haphazard and your bills may not reflect actual consumption. After 2 years we still haven't worked out how my mobile phone charges work, and in our first flat the electricity statements bore no resemblance to the actual meter...

Ladies thank you and thank you! Chizz that's really great info, was exactly what I was looking for, hopefully tomorrow we will be finishing the details of our contract for 1B flat at one of the Sabann Towers (fingers crossed), and I do remember that the real state agent mentioned that for the flat we liked the Qatar Cool standing fee was responsibility of the LL and that we only need to take care of the usage charge, and thanks to HappyBird we know is something around 100QAR per month (at least for 1B flat and 2 people) ---- if you need to pay the standing fee add another 252QAR for the same size apartment. We also know that the premium package for cable with OSN is 250QAR p/m (plus 1,585QAR one time payment for the decoder,at least last year) and that the charge for Internet with Vodafone is 200QAR p/m for 5mb speed. That leave us with at least 802QAR p/m (including the Qatar Cool standing fee) but we still need to add to that the electricity & water (that's what I meant Chizz but instead said gas, sorry). After reading the other thread I would like to think that we can deduct that cost from Jonners post, because if she paid a little less than 6000QAR for 9 months of use (with most of the months for standard charges), of which we know 252QAR is the Qatar Cool standing fee p/m then 6000/9=666 - 252= 414. Let's say for water & electricity she paid around 400QAR. But I can't be sure of this of course since later she stated that the bill reflected the cost of having Qatar Cool (didn't mentioned anything about water & elect), if the amount of 6000 doesn't included it then we have a total monthly bills for at least 1,100QAR without the water & electricity!! (250 cable, 200 Internet, 650 Qatar Cool). But again I would tend to think she paid around 650 p/m including Qatar cool standing fee, water & electricity. To sum up, we can only guess that utilities for Internet, cable and Qatar cool (and hopefully also water & elect) are anything between 1,100-1,500QAR (of course you can always go for a not so fast Internet conection and less chanels for cable). Or more if you want the land line too. I will ask tomorrow at the real state agency about all this, to make sure we are going to be notified of our monthly bills. Thanks again for the help and the info. Hope that what I said has any sense! Lisa if I sign the contract will try to find out about morning coffees for sure. Chizz hopefully we will be neighbors soon!

Hi there - yes, you are right about only being able to get OSN cable here on The Pearl - no Mosaic here as far as I know. You have to buy the decoder and it's yours to keep - ours was 1585 rials 12 months ago. We get the Premier Plus Package and it was 2,850 rials for the first year...DH has to renew in the next few days and told me today it was just over 3,000 rials to renew, so must have gone up a bit. He is going to The Oyster to renew and set the account up there (just as you come onto The Pearl and go down the approach road, there is a strange shaped building on the right hand side - that's The Oyster). It could be that the concierge will send the forms for you, but unless you pay by cheque, you will have to go in person to do the credit card charging..... Internet is provided separately by Vodaphone as mentioned - there's a small shop on The Pearl - 200 rials per month for 5 mega bit speed. DH either does direct debit or pays for the year...not sure, as he handles the bills...as far as I know, you can't get faster speeds at the mo until they get fibre optic cables here (so I heard)...but I have found that the internet is pretty fast. We don't have a land line, so can't comment on the price for that, but they were very quick to set up our cable and internet...I think we only waited a day and that was during Ramadan...could have just been lucky though! Now the bill paying issue...well, that's another matter and I have posted about that here before - still have not paid a bill after a year here and haven't been cut off yet. I would ask the real estate agent to clarify how much Qatar Cool actually is as they seemed to gloss over this when we were shown around and agreed to rent, i.e. they never mentioned it at all and just said that bills were ''very cheap'' here in Qatar'. We lived in Dubai before coming here and our air con was free through District Cooling, so probably didn't think about it here. Here's the thread about bills on The Pearl anyway: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=169052 Any other questions - fire away....by the way, we don't have gas here on The Pearl, neither tank supply or mains... edited by chizz on 14/08/2012

I found this regarding the Pearl on this website: http://community.thepearlqatar.com/English/Pages/intro.aspx How do I apply for the Telecom services at the Pearl-Qatar? • For TV and Phone line services, all you need to do is to complete and submit your (TV, Phone line) application form to your concierge. • For internet services, please contact Vodafone Qatar - providers of internet services at The Pearl-Qatar I am moving to Doha with my DH at the beginning of September and we are hoping to rent an apartment at the Pearl which I have been looking at the internet to try to answer the same questions as you. I haven't found any coffee mornings specifically at the Pearl yet so if you find one please post it here so I can come along.
