Hi guys...heading back home after being on Doha for almost a year..just wondering how you go with taking food like baklava or dates or saffron nuts etc? I would like to get sme from souq where they measure and pack for you rather than those prepared more commercial packages and backlava from Patissarie Suisse hopefully....but what about customs and declaring...will they let any of it through?
Any other sorts souvenirs on a budget that u could recommend would be great too...me hads a bit too full with schools asses, seats new applications....kids sick etc so jsuT need advice as we have literally 20 days before we leave! Thks! Oh and we r muslims so any ismalic gifts or souvenirs which don't cost a bomb would be great advice too. Thks!
:)

I've always taken the boxed packaged nuts from C4, Lulu etc. Almonds in dates in chocolate. Chocodate, I think. People love them and they come in all different sized boxes. A pack of 3 for a girlfriend, a box of 12 for a family. Simple and easy!

I take both back quite often. Just declare it and don't spend too much just incase they don't allow it. The baclava may be a problem due to the nuts, but I also take nuts and declare them, and have always been told its fine.

We took packets of dates back with us last time but they were the ones that were sealed and with a label. I declared them and they checked them through customs and said they were no problem. Lol my mum was so worried about not getting hers in that she ate about half a packet on the plane only to be told that she could have taken them in. She had quite a belly ache by the time they landed. I wouldn't chance it with the ones you buy in the souq or if you do then only buy a small packet and make sure you declare it - nothing more embarassing than being hauled up by customs when you're exhausted after a long flight home. Same probably goes with saffron.

Thanks guys... yes I know how strict they r usually whenever we have gone anywhere across the world ...we haven't bothered bringing back food items for us no matter how much we loved them...but with Ramadan coming thought it would be nice to bring back a little bit of the Middle East for the rest of the family...(this is our first time living outside of Oz) Except how to get through and what to say in customs or did u buy those pre packaged items ..like bateel etc which then lose that charm... :( Will go with whatever I can guess..thanks guys..well this is the first of many trips home so its matter of trial and error :)

Watched a series of programmes on Australian immigration on UK TV and virtually stopped everyone with food stuff - huge penalties. Please check the website for dos and donts.

Australia is VERY fussy about ANY food coming into the country. You might get your dates in if they are properly sealed in a shop labeled bag. I brought back saffron but it was in a sealed bag but t was touch and go. Just bring them and if they get through good, if not, well..just don't spend too much.

Can only help with the souvenirs question. I would definitely check out souq waqif!! Really nice handmade things, scarves, shawls, jewelery, purse mirrors with cute drawings of the Qatari culture etc.
