Got a text from a friend re FCO travel advice and checked the British Embassy's Website in Doha re Travel Advice for Qatar :

"We advise British nationals in Qatar to maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places. You should avoid large gatherings and demonstrations. We are aware of reports of a possible protest on Tuesday 15 March or Wednesday 16 March, etc"

Has any of you ladies received any similar update from your relevant embassies?

Travel alerts on the Canadian embassy websites have always warned that people travelling in this area should be vigalant and to "exercise a high degree of caution." It mentions nothing of expected protests, just that protests may occur and people should avoid these areas. (However, that same message was posted in that section 2 years ago.) That being said, my husband's employer did recently advise everyone that we should always have some American cash on hand in case we need to leave the country quickly, and because we don't have an embassy here in Qatar they told us which embassies we can contact locally for assistance.

Thanks RachelA - yes, the call for protests have been/still are on the internet. However, I find this to be so unlike the British Embassy to take such a step, from previous years of experience with relying on them for information. My immediate reaction was to check the US Embassy's site and I was quite puzzled as to the date of their last message - as mentioned in your thread. Fingers crossed that everything will be fine ;).

The last Warden Message on the US Embassy site was from May 2010! I've heard about this alert from a few British friends. I've also heard that there were demonstrations scheduled last week but they never took place cause hardly anyone showed up. Just what I've heard - NOT verified.
