Has anyone had any luck using one of these? It's a device that you install on a US TV with cable (I suppose it would work anywhere, not just US) that allows you to control the TV there so that you can watch here. My adult son suggested that I get one for installation on one of his TVs in NY.

I believe the highest you can get if you pay directly is 4 mb. Because t is adsl in Doha (no cable broadband) and because our experience is that companies always seem to do things on the cheap here...the adsl signal is seriously affected by how many users are on it and how far you are from the providers equipment. I would never use adsl in the USA or UK and always had cable broadband (time warner, virgin media) but we have no choice here :(. It is what it is...4 mb is extremely slow compared to the US or UK so you just have to get used to it :( Your tower may offer "free" Internet as ours did until recently when they just decided to turn it off and not tell us, and then you can subscribe directly but it depends on the telephone lines as the adsl signal is dependent on that so living in a tower can get complicated ( here in Doha). So bottom line is evn if The provider does offer a higher speed to businesses you are likely to experience a worse connection during peak times from everybody on it and then everyone downloading movies!

I have no idea. DH was told we could get a higher package and even paid for it. Then when we weren't getting it, and complained, they said you are getting the highest that is available to you (1/2 of what we had paid for). Go Figure. I can ask DH (he is asleep in Doha and I am in the US) in the morning what our speed is. We have had few problems viewing our SlingBox even at the reduced speed. care

Question about internet speed. Can you get a higher package if you live in an apartment tower?

We got Slingbox last summer and have had no trouble with it (other than when my non-tech savvy parents accidentally knock a wire loose!!). It's fairly easy to set up, but yes it is dependent on the internet speed, so you may want to spring for the higher package with Qtel.

Cablebox, SlingBox and Tivo are all in the US. You will watch the SlingBox through your computer.

Carathop -- Is your Tivo here or in the US? I was wondering if I should get a DVR box from the cable company in the US -- or perhaps a Tivo -- but I don't know what end it needs to be connected to. Completely technology illiterate!

We have had and used a SlingBox for about 5 years. It's great for what it is, but completely dependent on your internet speed. If you have a slow internet connection, on either end, the SlingBox can't stream the TV from the host. The Slingbox would have to be hooked to a television or cablebox that isn't used often. You will control the SlingBox, and the television and cablebox, from Doha. This means if someone is watching DOG the Bounty hunter and you changed the channel in Doha to watch Ghost Hunters International, the person back home is stuck watching Ghost Hunters. When we were in China we had our SlingBox hooked up to a cable box in my parents guestroom. There wasn't even a TV hooked up to it. That worked fine. You only need a TV for the setup portion. We still use a SlingBox in Doha and don't have much trouble with it. We have the SlingBox hooked up to our Tivo so we record the shows we want to watch when they are aired in the US and watch them when it is convenient in Doha. HTH care

I don't know anyone that has tried here but I don't see why it wouldn't work here, as the idea is to be able to use it anywhere...the only problem could be your internet connection may have issues and interrupt the streaming but many people here report to use vee pee nnnn's so they are connecting in the same sort of manner...
