Thank you kitsune. We're going to try and include "certificates of good health" from their doctors, as well as a letter of goodstanding from their medical aid. Do they need some kind of letter stating that they are on pension?
Hi catberry, you or your husband needs to go to the immigration department that is on the corner of khalifa street and the al shamal highway. You need to take with you your passport with your residence visa and a copy of your parents passports and the dates they want to travel. Just get a number and get in line. When you get to the front of the queu explain what you want. They will then tell you the name of the officer you need to see to get the special dispensation. If you are lucky he will be there and you can get it done relatively easily, if not, you just keep going back until you see the guy and he stamps or signs it. The difficulty is just that there is no guarantee that they will actually grant the visa, you just have to hope....... Good luck
Hey there folks. Would someone be able to give me a summary of how to go about this in the correct & shortest way? I am 6 and a half month's pregnant and we are relocating to Qatar next week from Abu Dhabi. So not only do we have to look for a villa, new gynae and hospital to give birth, find a live-in nanny, we also need to apply for visas for my retired folks to come and visit as I would like to have them in Doha with me for the birth! Any advice will be helpful. Thank you so much
oh gosh yes! sorry! i totally meant to update this.
basically yes. we did. it was a monumental pain the rear. DH ended up queuing for about 4 hours every night for 5 nights in row (it was over ramadan, so no idea if its easier normally) he had to see 3 different people, but eventually yes they did give us a 30 day visa.
if you want to extend the visa for another 30 days (which we have just done) the person has to go and have blood tests and xrays done at the medical commission (the same place everyone goes for their visa medicals), wait a day for the results and then go to immigration with the results and get the visa extended. that sounds like a hassle, but compared to getting the visa in the first place, it was actually really easy and quick. we got the medical done and visa extendedd in less than 48 hours.
hope this helps!
they wouldnt let us apply at all.
the signatures are to get a dispensation, so that we can start the application process.
am not suprised that you had a different experience than me, one thing that does seem to be a constant here, is that nothing is constant!
but saying that, as far as i know, you cannot apply for a visit visa for anyone over the age of 65 with a south african passport unless you get a special dispensation. how you actually go about getting that dispensation, well, i suspect like most things here, its down to who you get on the day..........
Please can you tell me if you eventually got them the Visa?

Have the visa applications actually been rejected Kitsune?
I heard about this rule before and was really concerned about it when applying for my mother's visit visa a few months ago. I went to apply for her visa in person and took my newborn baby along in a sling, got a lot of attention and skipped a lot of queues... thank you baby. They did send me around to get a few signatures from captains etc but no one even mentioned the age thing to me... could just have been the cute baby thing...
... or perhaps it was approved by mistake because on the original visa they had her nationality wrong (my husband's nationality is different so that confused them). I had to go back to have the natoinality corrected but again, no one mentioned the age thing at all.....
So there is hope! Hope you get it sorted...
update......... DH went this morning for the second signature, but was turned away as the required captain isnt in until tomorrow. DH says they were very non comittal about wether or not he will actually sign the dispensation off or not, but we are going to keep trying anyway.......
Thanks for the info. We are moving over soon and my folks want to visit in Jan, had no probs getting my dad into AD but I guess a new country has new rules.
hi rachela, unfortunatley as puppylove2 says, the hotel cant help if they are over the age of 65. puppylove2, neither of my folks have a degree, so that option isnt open to us :-(
however there is still a glimmer of hope as we are going to immigration first thing in the morning (again) and we will try to get the signature of the guy who makes these sorts of decisions. in fairness, the first signature was a matter of 30 seconds with one of the captains downstairs at immigration, it was just the 3 hours of queueing before that to get to him............
as my parents in law have been here previously with no problems (british passports) it never occured to us that there would be an age limit on visit visas!!! so thought i would put it on here in case anyone else needs the info
Not sure if I have read this right is this rule only for South African passport holders or do you also mean British passport holders over 65 too?

We had the same problem at Christmas, bringing my parents (SA, over 65) across. The hotel couldn't help us because of their ages. Eventually, my parents dug up their degrees and sent them across and we got them business visas.
My parents found it very amusing, travelling to Qatar on "business" after having been retired for 20 years!
Good luck!
Would it be possible through a hotel with a reservation? I did that not long ago for an Egyptian relative who couldn't get a tourist visa. Let me know and I can give you the info of the hotel we used.
cannot get a visit visa here.
as we have just discovered. in order to get a visa, you have to go to immigration and get a special dispensation, at least, you can TRY to get the dispensation, there is no guarantee they will grant it. we are in the midst of attempting this seemingly impossibly complicated and difficult tasks ourselves. will update if we get it!
just thought others who may have parents who would like to visit, should know of the restrictions. before tickts have been bought etc etc.
