Hi everyone
I'm just after information and advice about what it's like to work as a midwife in Qatar?
I've been approached by a recruiting agent about a job in Doha. I'd never really thought about working in the Middle East but their email has sparked my interest.
We are a family of 3, we have a 19 month old. We currently live in the UK. I've been an NHS midwife for 10 years and I'm very experienced in the intrapartum setting, both delivery suite and midwife led unit.
Any advice about working and living in Qatar would be appreciated.
Thanks Kate

I am a midwife and I lived in Doha for 2 years (but that was 4 years ago). At that time it was almost impossible for a western nurse/midwife to get a good job in Doha. But things are changing, with Sidra opening and HMC employing more western nurses. As far as I know Qatar follows the American model. There is no midwifery registration as we know it, you register as a Nurse and then work as an obstetric nurse in labour ward or other departments. I do not think you will have the autonomy that you have in the UK. But things are changing and I believe there is a big demand for people like you. edited by nataliep on 11/06/2014 edited by nataliep on 17/06/2014

I lived in Qatar for 2 years and am home 3 years. I am a recently retired palliative care nurse and at the time, there were no jobs for nurses from UK, US, NZ etc. unless attached to likes of Qatar petroleum or schools. A Kiwi nurse and I set up a nurse peer group which is still going as far as I know. We had study days and attended lectures at a local university. I know an American nurse who is still in Qatar. working as a nurse and involved with the Qatar nurse peer group. They have a FB page too. My American friend might be able to advise you. Hope that helps? :) edited by JoyceB on 10/06/2014
