Hello Ladies,

I understand this might not be the best time to post this question with all the campaigns going on but curious as I keep getting conflicting information.

Can you please confirm if it is OK for men to wear shorts in malls etc? I do not mean the really short shorts but decent knee length shorts? We're moving from Canada and my OH is concerned as we're in the middle of summer (high of 30C) and he cannot imagine how he will survive the weather there without his shorts and T's (just a T shirt, no vests or tank tops... yes for men).

Thank you for your help.

I agree with previous posters, these shorts haven't been an issue for more than 10 years. However, there have been the 2 personally known to me incidents, and others by hearsay in the past 2 - 3 months (as one guy said, "I've been to motor vehicles every year for 10 years and this year they wouldn't let me in wearing the shorts"). Personally, I hate going to government offices for anything, so I dress so that I can do it in one go without worrying if I'll be turned back.

like lalala, my husband has been wearing knee length shorts non-stop, year-round for the last 8 hers we've lived here. When he goes to govt offices, he generally dresses nicer though anyway so he gets better service/ treatment. That said, there is campaign in full swing lcalled "reflect your respect," which indicates that males and females should cover their knees.

I know, exactly, so it seems our husbands will be able to wear shorts. LOL :) Thank you for the input. Khokha2 - We're a Muslim family moving in 2-3 months from Toronto, Canada. I am not aware of shorts being a problem either unless visiting a mosque.

DH lives in shorts outside of work and has never had an issue with it in eight years. Below the knee in Ramadan. On (or slightly above) the knee always seems to have been fine outside of Ramadan. Thanks for the tip marycatherine. He'd never have gone to a ministry in shorts but he might have gone for the car inspection!

Thank you for the input. So Big boy pants when visiting government offices but malls etc shorts should be OK. Khokha2 - We're a Muslim family moving in 2-3 months from Toronto, Canada. I am not aware of shorts being a problem either unless visiting a mosque. I will tell him he can pack his shorts, will be happy. Thank you again.

Government offices (Ministry of Interior, Car inspection/Registration/Driver's License, etc.) are refusing entry to men wearing this type of clothing. I know 2 personally who were told to go home and change. I have heard (but don't know anyone myself) that some women have been turned away as well for not wearing clothing covering knees, shoulders to the elbow or showing "too much" cleavage. Elsewhere, your DH is most likely to be OK. However, I wouldn't be surprised to hear if it was an issue occasionally.

I'm moving to Qatar in a couple of months so my answer might not be that accurate, but I'm guessing yes. We lived in Saudi, the strictest of them all, for two years and my husband wore the type of shorts you are referring to all the time. BTW, I am a Muslim, and even in our religion shorts that go below the knee are fine. That's my humble, not very educated opinion, but let's see what the ladies who actually live(d) there say :)
