next step in our move is housing. we have been offered 2 options a villa in al rayyan or al jazi. from what i can find on the internet al jazi is an older compound with good security (from older posts) and al rayyan is a newer development. we are a family of 4 with 2 dds aged 5 and 7. any feedback/comments on this 2 locations would be greatly appreciated. we do not have a school yet, hoping to get confirmation at the end of the month....fingers crossed!!!! cheers

Sdc....there is cable and satellite tv here but we were in Al Jazi for a supposed temp placement which turned out to be a year...and so we did not want to take out a contract for it. Al Jazi provide you with a box but coverage is poor and channels are often frozen. However, Al Rayyan provides a much better free package included....get all movies, premier league sports, kids and lifestyle programmes included. I think Sherbourne is further up Al Rayyan road from here...traffic is bad throughout Doha....but it does help if you are in the same district. There are a couple of other compounds near here...with the Al Fardan one not quite finished yet. Of course, you need to visit and decide for yourself...each to their own..... My husband drives back to West Bay every day from here...takes him 10/15 mins depending on traffic...same on way home...in case you end up at school there. Hope that helps...once you get the school sorted then that will ultimately dictate where you will live.

Dubaistars . It could be a journey of an hour from Y village or AFG 5 to Sherbourne . I don't know if Sherbourne put on buses but something to think about as its a long old trek on an extremely heavy industrial traffic route. Alfarden 2 to Sherbourne is still quite a long commute . Have you asked Alfardan about compound 6 ? It is soon to be finished and just behind Al Messilah ( older compound may not be your thing )where lots of Sherbourne pupils live .Perhaps other ladies can recommend Gharaffa or smaller Al Rayyan compounds . edited by BEDH on 12/04/2013

hi weekirst! sorry but what do you mean by inhouse tv channels? is there no SKY tv or other cable company? i have never visited doha before so i have no idea about location as of yet. i would prefer to be near the school but that won't be finalised for a while. i hope when we visit in may the school will be selected then we can decide on the villa. hi dubaistars! yes, we have also applied to sherbourne. we have in fact to applied to 6 schools and hopefully 1 of them will confirm a place for both dds. have you selected your villa yet? how old are your kids? maybe we can catch up in august if you are in town. thanks again for the replies!! Hello again, I have daughter in yr 7, and two sons in yr5& yr1. As to the house, we didn't like alrayyan at all, which is supposed to be the closest compound to sherborne, i think we will have to live in alfardan gardens 2 or 5 or the Y village... All are very close to villagio mall but maybe will need around 30 mins to schl!!! Be prepared that the country is so depressing.... You just feel that an earthquake or tsunami has just hit the place& it's recovering now!!!!... And to add to the bad... no road signs anywhere... You have to hug your google map& drive... Or ur gps.. Which we didn't have in our rental car. Good luck again and let's stay positive :)

I cannot help you re school, but have lived in Al Jazi before moving up to Al Rayyan....both compounds have good and bad points. Al Jazi is old...the kitchens and toilets need upgrading...it was opened 1994 and it shows. The repairs tend be done on an ad hoc basis with parts butchered from old equipment. The inhouse tv channels are not good either...but lovely gardens and big wide streets. Al Rayyan is more tightly packed in, but the standard of the houses inside is very good and maintenance is top notch....and they are proactive with servicing A/C etc. There is a shop on the compound and the coffee shop is opening within the next week. Plenty of children on the compound...although I think the pool area is a bit small. The inhouse Tv provided is very good. Location wise...yes Al Jazi was close to West Bay.....but here we are close to both Landmark and Villagio and the airport....I was wary of the location but have found it to be fine.

We have already applied, but even the school said there are numerous applicants! Mind you most of the schools that we applied to have said the same. The idea to arrive in August was to try to get the family settled. In some ways, might be good if less traffic so I get familiar with the area. Do many kids go to school by bus??? Appreciate all your advise BEDH! Hello, We are moving to doha too in July. We went last week for a short visit and we went to Beverley hills alrayyan villas and were not impressed at all. Our three Kids will be going to sherborne...from what we hear and read it is supposed to be a good school. Try applying there... Good luck

August will be very quiet with many expats fleeing to cooler climes.Ramadan ends around 7th and then there is Eid holidays of up to one week so it is a different routine for locals too. July and August in Doha gives you a very skewed sense of the city.Traffic is non existent . If you haven't already apply to DC westbay online.I have heard the response to the new campus is exceeding expectation. edited by BEDH on 11/04/2013

DC West Bay Campus is the plan. Most comments on this forum have been very positive about DC in general. We are hoping to get a look and see visit next month. We are scheduled to arrive in August, will anyone be around??

If you can get your children into the new Doha College campus and lived in Al Jazi your life would be sweet ! Al Rayyan villas are nice inside but it is a VERY high density compound . Al Jazi is old but most of Doha would die to live there .Houses have quite big gardens and there is loads going on for children. The compound is airy and green and its right smack in West Bay .
