Hi all
Has anyone taken Arabic classes at Fanar? Just wondered if they are good, as the course seems very cheap compared to what most schools charge (I can only speak for ones in Dubai). Are the different levels all mixed into the same classes? I know male and female classes are separate at Fanar....
Thanks in advance

I have done 3 levels at fanar and have loved it. the pace is fast and you have to work hard to keep up. By the end of level 1 you can read and write arabic but understand very little, still a huge achievement. i think the course has improved over the last few years and i had great teachers. it is also a nice opportinity for western expatriates to meet lots of people who I never would have, and that was great. The issue is that arabic is really hard to learn and the opportunities to practise here are few and far between. You learn classic arabic which is really different to the local Qatari dialect but does mean that you have a form of arabic that can be understood in any arabic country. Hope that helps

Advance warning - this information is around 5 years old! I started lessons at Fanar when I first came to Qatar. I dropped out in frustration. I'm not dim but not that great at languages and the pace was just way too fast for me and I was getting frustrated (and angry) about my inability to keep up. My personal experience was: - the class was full of urdu speakers who could already read the alphabet and it seemed to go at their pace eg in class two we were expected to be able to write words on the blackboard - there wasn't a lot of explanation of grammar rules - I didn't really understand what was going on - we seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time translating words in the text book that were there to show sounds eg the teacher would be working out how to explain the word 'malaria' (not the actual example but similar in complexity) in lesson 1. Edited to say: when I finish my current study I plan to start again but it won't be at Fanar. Happy to pay quite a bit for classes as long as I get the right teacher. edited by lalala on 03/06/2012

Well, they won't teach you how to speak Arabic. You will (very slowly) learn to read and write Qu'ranic Arabic. After 5 levels you will have a vocabulary of about 300 mostly archaic words. The Arabic language is actually many dialects and is best learned in two separate courses, written and spoken.
