Can someone explain the logic of Qatar Airways Privilege Club 'family membership' to me?!

My husband and I are both separate members of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club. I am really struggling to understand the point of 'family membership' as explained here http://www.qatarairways.com/privilegeclub/en/family-programme.html as it seems to imply that if I were to be added to hubby's account instead of having my own separate account, I would only get 50% of the miles I would have got with my own card.

If he books flights for both of us, can we both separately accrue points to our individual accounts, or can they only be claimed once per booking irrespective of how many people travel? (as that would be the only way I could see the point of family membership). If the latter, I think we will book our flights separately to get around this nonsense.

Sorry if this isn't making sense, I am trying to explain what I mean but it's difficult!

The simple answer to your initial question, is "no, because there is no logic to it" !! I'm a FF with QA and it drives me mad - so bl**dy confusing to add family members...

Qmiles are the mileage you accrue based on the distance you travel, and you redeem them for flights or upgrades. Qpoints are also accrued based on your distance, and these are used to determine your membership level. You need 150 Qpoints to obtain or maintain Silver status, and I think 300 points to get to Gold. The higher the level, the greater the benefits. This is all explained pretty clearly (I think) on the Privilege Club website.

What's the difference between QPoints and QMiles?

You get bonus Qmiles when doing online bookings, so in that case you would want to book the tickets separately so that you both get the miles. When multiple tickets are booked together only 1 person gets the miles (for the online booking bonus that is).

also if you find you don't get credited your points, you are supposed to be able to add them later on the website but that didn't work for me and I just emailed them my details and it was done within a day.

Being on you husband's account won't help him achieve or keep Gold Status -- the status is based on Qpoints, not Qmiles. You will help him earn more Qmiles. Qpoints are only earned by the main-listed person on his/her flights. If the main account holder is Gold, and the other person doesn't travel a lot, it probably makes sense to be in a family membership because all of the points are together. However, if the main account holder is only Burgundy or if both people travel a lot, it is likely better to have seperate accounts to accumulate more points -- and if both can reach silver or gold on their own, you have more lounge benefits, weight allowances, etc.

As long as when you book you inform them of the two separate Privilege numbers, you should each accrue the relevant points. We have family membership, for the same reasons Emma123 mentioned, to keep my DH on Gold status.

Ahh OK it kind of makes sense now (I think). We will normally always travel together, as DH doesn't go away for work or anything. He's booking flights for us both today so we can go back home to England in September. Will we both be able to accrue points from the one booking, or would we have to book completely separately to do that?

I think it is only worth it if you are at silver or gold tier. DH travels a lot so is a 'gold' member, which means we get 100% of the miles. We pool our miles on a family card as my kids and I dont travel enough to accrue enough points to get us very far.

I had wondered too Amy, in the end like you I joined seperatly. But my hunch is.... status levels. If the man (or main account holder) accrues the flights they will get to the next status tier quicker. Which may benefit those families with one partner travelling frequently and say the wife only travelling one or twice a year. Anyway that's the guess I came up with??
