DH is considering a job with Qatar Petroleum. Anyone know anything about this company? They sound ok but its always good to get the views of EW members. Would love to hear anyone's views before taking things further.

They are basically like the public service in the 80's...no one will take responsibility for anything, no one will make any decisions, including making payments. I know a lot of people who do/did work for them - they are fine as an employer - I think that the major issue that their staff face is frustration at not being able to get any decisions made/not being able to make decisions/dealing with people who are basically just going through the motions of turing up to work each day. I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a job. Someone famous was once quoted as saying something like "oil companies are the worst run organisations in the world but they still can't help but make money".

marycatherine, thank you very much. You obviously know someone who is or have worked at this company. Its hard to make a decision as, the company he is currently working for are good and look after their staff. Problem will be when DH finishes his current assignment located in Qatar, will they find him something else, and where may that be? So he is happy where he is but is trying to find something else for when this project ends, especially if there is no other assignment for him to go to.

QP is one of the largest employer's in Qatar. They are well organized in that you will know exactly what is expected of you and what you can expect from them. Like all quasi-government organizations here and around the GCC, employment of nationals is a priority. Some will be qualified and hard working, some will not. If your hubby can wrap his mind around the fact that some of his co-workers will be less motivated (shall we say) to be productive and efficient than he is then he should be OK. Another factor to be aware of is that if your DH's job is nationalized he may be out the door or his contract not renewed. Just read the terms and conditions carefully before signing on. Having said the above, I know of many people who have worked for QP quite satisfactorily for many years. A handful have been ousted because of nationalization - it can very much depend on how vital the position is to the success of day to day operations of the organization and if they need someone qualified, experienced and reliable to keep the op going forward smoothly and safely.
