Are there any libraries(lending or regular) or second hand bookstores in Doha? I have been here for a few months now and the only option I have manged to find is Jarir which obviously was an utter dissapointment!

Its not really a bookstore, but there is a book buy/swap at the Qatar Veterinary Center. They have a couple hundred books in there that people donate and then you can buy for 5qr each and then the proceeds go to Dogs in Doha. I've gotten quite a few from there and many of them are some I would never have read before, but for 5qr I figured it was worth it to try! I usually just donate them back afterwards so someone else can buy them. They are all just kind of thrown in there and you have to scrounge around, but its not a bad place if you just want a book for cheap. I think they are going to be putting in proper shelves in the store itself once they have more donations.

Yes, the Georgetown library is open to non-Georgetown folks, for a nominal annual fee (forget how much, but it wasn't much). And I second katcall's Kindle recommendation. It has been a total life-changer for me and many of my friends who are avid readers.

I don't know if it's changed, but a few years ago now Georgetown had no problems with me browsing their stacks and doing research there. I found the staff very friendly and kind. Not an answer to your question, but I wanted to say that I lived here a few years without a kindle and finally bought one late last year. Has made a world of difference to my quality of life in Qatar.

just wanted to note that Georgetown also has a considerable literature selection - in both English and Arabic.

What subject are you interested in? Most of these libraries will require you to be a resident here in Qatar/have a Qatari ID and will charge a refundable deposit fee to become a library patron. If you don't wish to pay the fee you can always just sit in the libraries and read. The Museum of Islamic Art also has a library and a great section for reading/studying.
