This concept is totally foreign to me as I AM the maid in my house! Lol. Exactly how large are these rooms? Is it the same size as the other ones, or just big enough to fit a twin bed and a dresser?

LOL@Kimmc3! I def think I have grounds to get part time help. Surely my husband doesn't want me cleaning all those rooms all day. :) I don't think I could get use to having a stranger live in my house either. edited by irisjd on 10/05/2012

We've had 2 different compound villas in Doha & both of them have had decent maids rooms with en suites. I don't have a live in, just a very part time lady. Iris - yeah...the amount of bathrooms you get here is crazy and you will need help to clean, the dust here is a law unto itself! You'll learn to ignore it eventually - lol.

I cant forget when I first came here and was showed a "maids room" by the real estate agent. I laughed but then realized he wasnt joking. It was the size of the wardrobe (didnt realize it then - but its a common size). I said in horror that a human could not fit in the room. He said to get an indonesian maid because they are smaller. I laughed again, and realized he wasnt joking again. :(

I thought our maid's room was tiny when we moved and offered our maid our spare room instead. She looked at me in horror, declared it was too posh and wanted the maid's room. She manages to fit two of her sisters in there overnight on a Thursday. Again I've offered the spare room, they don't want it :)

Ok, I was just wondering. I don't want a live in maid, I just wanted to see what size room I was working with since almost every villa has one. I'm thinking I can finally get my scrapbooking room. It's a shame that I have to move all across the world to get one. :\: I do like the concept of possibly having a maid come to my house once a week to help out with all these ridiculous bathrooms I'm seeing. What in the world?

they vary immensely. In our villa its a good sized bedroom with en suite, we don't have a maid and have it set up as a guest bedroom, with queen sized bed. In apartments its often just windowless cupboard off the kitchen. I have even heard of people whose maids don't have a room, they just roll out a mattress in the lounge after everyone goes to bed!

Well from my experience of living in my Uncle's maids room in Hong Kong and seeing first hand what some living conditions are like in Manilla I think Doha's maid accomadation I've seen aren't TOO bad size wise . My issue , and why i don't have a live in here , is that most are in the house and don't have their own kitchens or entrances .. In Bahrain most staff accomadation is separate and independent . Some Compounds even have a block of maids rooms where they have a common room .

The maid's rooms are tiny generally, although the one we have now is bigger than quite a few. I used to feel really bad, and when we got a maid (OK, attack me now!) I apologised profusely - she didn't know what I was talking about. Eventually she pulled out pictures of her home in the Philippines which she shared with 7 other people - just a couple of rooms, unplastered brick, no glass on the windows and a thatch roof that blew off every time there was a strong storm, no proper oven etc. Suddenly, our cosy dry room that was just for her with hot and cold running water and total use of my kitchen, garden etc didn't seem so bad! It's all a question of perspective, I think....

I have been here 2 years and the maid thing is still foreign to me.It's not for me!! However with regards to your question maids rooms again vary, but most I have seen are tiny the size of a cupboard. I wouldn't feel happy letting anyone stay in them. Some are outside and some are even under stairs. I wouldn't consider it as an extra room to your house

Er...no not even a twin bed usually. Some are so small that the maid would be expected to roll her bed up during the day :( One of the reasons we wouldn't have a live in maid is because I've hardly ever seen a villa which has a room which I would consider humane enough for a maid..... Our friend has a lovely stand-alone villa where the maid has her own separate cottage with separate entrance, but that isn't the norm, especially on compounds.
