Birds want to nest in our balcony!

We had this problem about 6 months ago when we first moved to our flat. A pair of birds nested in the gas valve box in the balcony. I couldn't do anything as they were there before we moved in. The next two weeks we had to dry our clothes indoors (the balcony is off the kitchen and views to a side alley so we are not infringing any laws here). The bids attacked us if we tried to open the balcony door, and left the place riddled with bird lice! Ewww...

The birds keep trying to come back to the same nesting place. Everyday I have to go outside several times to shoo them away. These are not cute little sparrows but big black birds which are very agressive.

Anyone here has delt with the problem and won the battle? I am tempted to get some chicken wire (the balcony already has some lattice iron cover but the hole has big enough for birds to get in) to keep the birds out -I don't even know where to get chicken mesh. Help?

p.s. Editing to say we actually like birds, just not on in our balcony please...

We had birds nesting on the windowsill of our last apartment... and they had 4 sets of eggs / chicks within a 10 month period. It's lovely to see, but horrid too as they leave bird poo everywhere which must be full of germs. No matter what I did (cleaned away the nest in between them having offspring, kept opening the window and shoo-ed them away, put pots on the windowsill, etc) they just kept on coming back!! Ours weren't aggressive but very smelly! Maybe call pest control, although I think they may only be able to get rid of them by harming them, which might not be what you want to do x
