Finally got official word that we are moving to AD......advice about what to bring/expect?

Hello All -

I've been lurking on this forum for a few months now as I've waiting for my husband's company to finally give him the go ahead that he officially has the job in AD. We got the official word today and so now I'm making lists and working on what I can for the move.

We are coming over sometime in mid-June or mid-July. Our kids will be at the American Community School (daughter in Grade 3 and son in Grade 5) and I think we may be living in Al Qurum (sp?) compound or Al Maha (sp?? I think it sounds like Maja....) hope to find out more details in the coming weeks.

I also have a 2 year old son and I'm a stay-at-home mom.

I'm used to going to the gym and am anxious to find one there that doesn't cost loads of money a month with great classes, day care (I think they call them creches??) for my son and ideally a racquetball court (although can't seem to find that info there - maybe I'll have to switch to squash???). I've seen information about a couple places so any advice on that is great.

My kids are pretty active with soccer, American football, rugby, gymnastics.....any advice on where to go for those things would be GREAT.

I'm also used to a playgroup for my son and am looking to meet people with similar aged little ones (he'll be 3 in September).

I'm cautiously optimistic about the move (we are coming from the Seattle area in the United States). I'm not looking forward to leaving my mom and my friends behind.....hoping to make as smooth a transition as possible.

Curious - we are most likely going to live in a compound. What exactly are those like?? Do you really have one big backyard between three or four villas?? Do you have any private yard?

Also - any other SAHM's out there? What do you spend your time doing? Afraid without my usual things that I do here (involved in local politics, used to teach music classes at a Montessori School, volunteer at school, coffee hours with girlfriends, gym, library storytimes, toddler times) that I might go crazy.

Are there library storytimes there? How about any kind of toddler time thing??

Also - any advice on what to bring that I won't find there from the states?

Thanks so much!!!

School typically starts in the first week of September. If you haven't ever experienced a really hot climate, I would submit that coming in July is really not a great idea, and you should hold off till August if you can, particularly if housing and such is being arranged before your arrival. I grew up in one of the hotter parts of Pakistan, and have found the heat pretty hard to take sometimes. For reference, I find Seattle in June chilly. Please let us know when you arrive. While there aren't nearly as many things to get involved in as you are used to, there *are* a lot of people looking for other people to hang out with. A tip of the hat to the Chittenden Locks from me, please. I was thinking it would be good to get settled before school starts (by the way - when does school start there???) but maybe we'll see if we can hold off coming until mid to late August if possible? I love our Summers where we live now and I think it might be best go build up to the hot temps there. I guess it depends on DH job and when the rest of the family has to move there.....

Elize, I admire your optimism! BCFaria, be prepared for intense heat during the summer months. You will live indoors with your AC on full-time. But my husband says that is why most people from rainy countries like it here as they are used to be confined to the indoors, just here it is sunny instead of rainy. I never got used to last year's summer but most people are very happy here and, yes, we all tend to go away during the summer months!

Hi Again, I forgot to mention though, be prepared for quite a climate change! You are coming from a place where it rains almost everyday to a place where it rains maybe 5 or 6 times a year :) Also Abu Dhabi is very quiet during the summer because most families travel during the summer vacation. But don't let this put you off, once school starts everything will be back to normal again. Elize.

Hi, Welcome to Abu Dhabi. I hope that you will enjoy living here as much as we do. My husband is from the States and I am South African. ACS is a very good school so your kids should be very happy there. The compounds you mentioned are both nice. As far as I know they both have gyms and swimming pools. There are many activities for children (although I am not sure about american football :)) as well as coffee mornings for you. There are also lots of volunteering opportunities in Abu Dhabi. For the little one the best will be to look at the Abu Dhabi Mums website. This is a group for mums and kids up to 6 years. (just google it) Hope this helps a bit.
