hello :) i'm a 'certain aged' married white female and have been living in AD and now AA for 5 1/2 years. yes white women do get stared at, no matter what you are wearing and how well you behave. mainly because we are from a culture to different to the majority of men here, namely sub-continent. some of the stares are annoying others slightly amusing, but noting threatening or what woudl fall into the category of being harassed. i was here for the first 6 mths without my husband and he was also a bit concerned about how i would be treated, but once he came for a visit he was more reassured. perhaps your so when your partner will have similar reassurances when they visit.
I have been here 6 years (Dubai and then AD) as a single white female and have never had any problems feeling unsafe. Certainly never been harassed, though we do have regular beggars outside my workplace who make a beeline for me, but leg it when they see OH approaching! Never ever seen it anywhere else in AD though, and I figure they hang around outside our building because they assume everyone is a rich expat/local,I just carry on and ignore because I am convinced these guys are not genuine! I wear a shirt/trousers so it isn't always clothes!
I have many friends who are also single females and have been here 5 or so years, and I imagine all would say the same or they wouldn't still be here.
divinglady , I`d say Abu dhabi is the best emirate to live in, very safe!
Well of course people will always look at you (some times its very annoying, but we all got used to it), but everything depends on the clothes you wear & how you act. Decent ladies will never be harassed.
All the best :)
Hello,
I have had a job offer as a dive instructor in Abu Dhabi and was wondering if you could give me an idea of what life is like there for a single white female? I have read conflicting things on the internet. My partner cannot come with me as we are not married and he is convinced I will be harassed on a daily basis.
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Thank you
