Hello, I am planning a move to Abu Dhabi to work for ADEC. I currently live in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and I am having a hard time deciding what to bring to AD with me. I am single in my early 30s. I am outdoorsy, I enjoy cooking and baking, reading, great conversation and good friends. I'm not a fashion diva, but I like to look presentable.

Can you help me? What did you bring that you are so happy you brought? What do you wish you'd left at home? And, what should you have brought that you didn't? I am thinking specifically about clothes and other personal items.

I am also curious about a few specific things:
I use an expensive Chi flatiron, is this something I should bring with me?
Do I need to purchase electrical adapters before I leave the USA?

Thank you for your help in advance!

A few more thoughts: We did silly things like gave away our salad spinner and some nice table linens. Grocery stores will have the smaller gadgets, and there are a few kitchen shops. Not sure of the pricing, but I havent found anything as extensive as a Sur la Table. But some spices you just wont find here. You will find a lot of Indian spices at most stores, and they are reasonably priced. You can get cumin here, if you have a fav cayenne bring it! We have a Bobby Flay cookbook and just ignore it for now, cant find lots of the spices. If you have a bike, there is some biking here. That was a big whoops on our part, we assumed there wasnt biking and sold ours. There are some nice clothing shops here, in a bit of a range. when I worked I still wore most of my stuff from home, and now I am a full time preggo mom so I am really schlumpy. Although its hot, most buildings have intense air con, so I found layering to work well for work. Never wore pantyhose, its not that conservative! Again, good luck!

Thank you for your response. I am hoping to cover myself for the first few months with just what I can pack in suitcases and carry-ons, which is why I'm very curious about clothing. I can have my family ship me things I may need when I am more settled in. However, as I'm an avid cook, I'm very curious what kitchen things you wish you would have brought with you (or what you did bring). Thanks for the spices idea, I would be lost without my cumin and cayenne! Most of my electronic items are dual voltage, so it sounds like I should be okay with that.

Hi there, congrats on the new job. We got rid of too much stuff before we came here, lots of kitchen things I wish we still had. I'd bring it all, if you can. Regarding electronics, if you have things that have a transformer already on the cord (usually a black boxy thing) it's easy to get adapters here for the physical plug. Like the cord for my camera charger has a box on it, says something about both voltages on it. We moved from the Northeast. I really miss having more shopping options, in terms of price. Would kill for a Target or Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Specifically in the kitchen, if there are certain, less run-of-the-mill spices you like, bring them. Am thinking especially Mexican ones, and you can't get real vanilla extract here. (But it's easy to make). Same with some medicines, we stocked up on Emergen-C and some things for our little girl. I think things here are more expensive, so we still shop massively when we go home. I also find things here simply inconvenient, easier to order and pay for Aramex to ship here. We kept some clothing for cooler and wet weather as we like to go to Europe. There are lots of choices for furniture over here, and prices run the gamut. I think it depends on how much time you have to hunt. And one weird word of warning, waiting for deliveries here s u c k s. Really, they may make you batty. Good luck, hope this helps!
