Morning Ladies

DH has finally got a starting date for his new role in AD. He will be flying out alone at the end of February and will be put in a hotel for seven days during which time he will have to opena bank account, get his residents permit, driving licence, claim housing allowance, find somewhere to live and arrange all the utilities.

Have any of you been in this situation as it seems a pretty tall order ! Any advice would be much appreciated.

my DH was only given a short period in accomm as well. He managed by using cheap hotels - Ibis, Premier Inn etc and when we came out he booked a serviced apartment. He negotiated around half the advertised price for almost a month. premier inn and ibis are fairly new so perhaps you can do a deal, look at l arabia apartments in mbz, also centro.

Just thought I would update you as you have all been very supportive . It would appear that despite raising a query with his new company DH will only be given seven days accomodation when he gets out there so please take pity on any headless chickens you may see scurrying around AD at the end of February!

He did work out there before we met so I think his chicken costume wil be coming out of the wardrobe pretty soon! My son is looking at sixth form places and we have applied to both Al Khubeirat and Al Yasmina . Have been toying with the idea of making Al Reem our base but read a few dodgy reports about Marina Heights on a random forum earlier today. have you applied at bsak and yas? so this year doing gcses? if you get a place at either they are both good. obviously bsak has been going much longer than yasmina, think it only started its sixth form like last year, this is its second year, bsak opened its seniors in 1999. i would wait until you get a place at school, reem would be ok for bsak, but its a bit longer away from yasmina. what sort of budget will you have? as that will determine where you are. reem is smaller than other apartments, they tried to squash in to many buildings. yes applied to both...belt and braces! We are looking at a budget of between dirhams160/180k but are still open minded as to location. thats a fine sum of money, most people even if they were at bsak or yasmina live in kca or kcb. you will need to drive whatever you do. if you look on island you will not find much for that budget if you do it will be a very old pokey villa etc, you would find an apartment. if you live on island you need to take into account that it depends where you are and how many traffic lights etc it will take you, it could take you longer than someone who goes off island and drives 40km more! but will be quicker.

hope you have all the certificates etc attested as they will be required for the stamps here. Thanks for your response Busy Bee. Looks like he is going to be running around like the proverbial headless chicken! Bearing in mind your above comment do you think its worth getting all certificates (birth , marriage) attested for myself and my son ready for when we join him in August? well its always good to be prepared. if you intend working then you will defo need them done, but i did mine many moons ago, and i dont think the birth certificates were done, its just the marriage they are usually interested in, and of course the degree certificates, which need to go to various departments to be given purple stamps etc. if the company is paying then why not. your company will have a pro and he should help in getting the stuff all done, they will tell you if you need them attested or not. things change here, they changed last year so hopefully may not this year. <em>edited by busybee2 on 30/12/2012</em>

Rewlly, he should request more time from his company or perhaps someone to assist. In my case, my company did everything for me except my Emirates ID which I had to do myself at the very beginning. My company even did all the running around for my youngest DD who is attached to my visa. Lets hope his company are as helpful as yours were!

Any advice would be much appreciated. ;) dont worry it will get you into practice at how ad works.... lots of red tape. you must get an emirates id before you can do the visa now, they are tied together, but your company should really be helping with all this. you can open a bank account if you get the correct paperwork from your company to help and it really all depends on which company too, some banks will require you to have salary paid in, some not. you cannot rent a place until you have a visa, and without a visa you cannot do utilities unless they are put into the companies names. depending on your nationality you may need an international driving licence, but usually most hire companies do not require it as long as your licence is in english etc. but as said once you have your visa you cannot use your foreign licence and you need to taxi around and go and exchange (if you can) to a local one. sometimes getting a visa can be done in a few days or months...... it just depends. dont worry he will have to do things at abu dhabi speed.

Usually companies give 1 month's accomodation in a hotel so you can sort out your accomodation, etc. I week is really short - can he recheck with his company on this?

I'm assuming AD is the same as Dubai but you can't get a driver's licence or open a bank account till you have residency visa. You can drive a hire car on a UK or intl licence but as soon as you get your resident visa you MUST get your local licence.
