I will be leaving Abu Dhabi for good at the end of June. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with shipping companies. I've gotten quotes from Emirates, Etihad Cargo and ISS Movers. ISS has door-to-door service but Emirates and Etihad only go to the nearest port of entry, which would be a 5 hour drive for me. ISS was also three times the price as Emirates and Etihad, too.

Any suggestions?

I had called ISS last Thursday and finally got the quote on Sunday. I don't have furniture to ship since my employer provided most of it and I'll be selling what I do have as my household items are in storage back home. I have mostly winter/cooler clothing, all my summer stuff, personal effects, a few gifts and one box of work-related items since I'm a teacher. I'm heading back to the U.S. and it seems most shipping companies only use New York, Chicago, D.C. and LA as ports of entry. I live in Ohio which is a good 5 hour drive to Chicago and 8 hours to New York. Will check out Crown. yes they will only be certain ports and then you have the drive to your location, but thats what door to door is, they will collect and deliver so they will do everything in between. of course usa is a big country with a lot of states not attached to the water or a port so they will have a large journey in front of them and thats what will increase the costings too.

there will be a big difference if you are just using cargo etc rather than door to door, as they then have to get it from the port to your house and unload etc.

also i would decide quickly a lot of people have been made redundant this year and so there will be a lot of people shipping stuff back to uk, and so there is only so many around of the big ones. also the longer you leave it the more it will be, but as you are going in june you will also be in the peak prices. i would get your "order" in asap.

i have a metal box winging its way across the high seas as we speak. i got quotes from crown, gac and delight, pickfords couldnt come and quote for more than 5 days so they lost out as i wanted to make a decision and it was only another one on top. you need to do door to door really, you dont want to have to do the paperwork and sort it out from port to house. do your research carefully. i was extremely impressed with the communication/administration of crown and gac, as i was firing questions back and forth, you need to check whether its one company or agents etc, for eg crown have a base in uk so they will be 1 company all the way thru, same i would say with pickfords, but other companies will use agents, we in the end went with gac as my box is heading for scotland and i know the local agent well and thats who gac were using. delight use agents too in uk. also you have to pay insurance on top so again it depends as each company use different insurance etc.
