I love all the fabric shops behind the Novotel, well, not exactly the Novotel, but Home Centre. Park behind those buildings and head into the block, and you will find a couple of dozen shops with exquisite material, including cottons.
There is Cairo Testiles and Cairo Fabrics, as mentioned. Can't remember which is which, but the Cairo next to the new Central market had lots of nice things too.
for free range chicken, I cannot be 100% sure, but try the Mazaraa shop-see link: http://www.abudhabiweek.ae/city-latest/1-news/2215-a-fresh-start
Try Madina Zayed in Abu Dhabi there are several shops in the building next to the gold souq and also across the road there is a shop malik shaheen that has lace etc and anything else you could think of.
i have answered with maliks and cairo textiles etc etc before on another thread which he was asking, so you have received information before this thread was asked. do a search.

I have three questions which no-one (I've asked) seems able to answer:
1. Where can I buy fabric in Abu Dhabi? Specifically fabric for clothes;
2. Where can I buy free range chicken, frozen or fresh;
3. Where can I find a good cleaner/housemaid? I would rather hire privately than use a company.
Thanks all!
1. cairo textiles, green sign, next to new souq, on khalifa st.
2. have you looked at spinneys/abelas etc.
3. that is the million dollar question, its very hit and miss, look at the notice boards in spinneys for someone leaving or at school etc and transfer from another family, give it a few more weeks and the people leaving at the end of academic year will be advertising their maids. remember you must sponsor or use a company to be legal.
any more?
