Is it normal for an employer to ask an employee to pay for the work visa? I have been selected for a job but had no interview just told I was successful. Is this normal?

No its not normal... and paying for your visa is Illegal and if at all Abu Dhabi immigration comes to know then they will blacklist the company

My personal opinion: it may be a scam. As far as I know employers will not ask you to pay for the work visa. Do some research and try to contact the company and insist to talk to the HR Manager. Hope this helps.
