A triathlon is a multi sport event, involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance events, in its most popular form, involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances

In its third year, Abu Dhabi International Triathlon has become one of the most coveted titles to win in the professional triathlete circuit. The race offers a selection of distances to accommodate athletes of all abilities. The 223km ‘long course’ boasts a 3km swim, a 200km cycle and 20km closing run, whilst newcomers can choose to tackle the ‘short’ course at half the length, with a 1.5km swim, a 100km cycle and a 10km run. The sprint course offers a 750m swim, a 50km bike and 5km run. There is an option to Team Relay on both the short and sprint distances where one person swims, one person cycles and another person will run, thus encouraging like-minded friends, families and colleagues to take up the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon challenge.

The event draws global interest, attracting racers from Brazil, the Channel Islands, China, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Slovenia, Turkey, Taiwan and Vietnam. Internationally, the United Kingdom had the most athletes registered followed by Germany and the USA. The Abu Dhabi Triathlon however, is for both professional and amateur athletes. The triathlon has seen the entries more than double from the innagural event, 1000 in 2010, 1,500 in 2011 to more than 2100 participants in the 2012 race. With a range of prizes from $50,000 to $1,000.

The Abu Dhabi International Triathlon is carried out in a beautiful settings, the event starts of at the Corniche beach, to swim the clear blue lagoon like waters of the Arabian Gulf, the bike course sees cyclists traveling alongside the shores of the breathtaking Corniche, featuring tree-lined roads, landscaped parks and gardens and the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf, which surround the city and onwards to the famous Yas Marina Formula One Circuit. The run course heads west along the Corniche out onto the breakwater with stunning views back to the city on the return leg, the finish line is on the Corniche Beach.
Safety is of prime importance during this competition, where in our blistering heat it is easy to become dehydrated or suffer heat exhaustion, with this in mind, there are first aid kits, sunscreen, food and hydration stations positioned throughout all parts of the course and in the transition areas.

At the finish line there is a fantastic atmosphere to cheer in the participants, music playing, and congratulations abound, this too makes the Abu Dhabi Triathlon a wonderful experience for both the competitors and spectators alike. Abu Dhabi comes into its own on occasions like these when everyone comes together at an event that promotes fitness, health and a sense of community.

Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) are behind the Triathlon, the entrance fees are AED 695 – long course, AED 475 short course and AED 275 for the Sprint course.
