Abu Dhabi City is an island, which is accessed by three bridges, Zayed Bridge, Musaffah Bridge and Maqta Bridge. But Abu Dhabi is actually spread across a much wider area, and is commonly described as being either on the island or off the island, then split into areas, Khalifa, Musaffah, Raha, etc (although there are now islands connected to the main island by man made super bridges, for example Yas Island, Al Reem Island, Sadyiat Island). The good thing is .. it is all very well signposted, and because it is not a huge city, its fairly simple to get around, once you have your bearings.
In the city, the roads are basically a grid, with odd number roads running one way, and even number roads running in the opposite direction… however, the roads have a name as well as a number, its good to take a note of which is which because when getting directions you may be told somewhere is on 4 between 7 and 9, or you may be told its on Muroor between Electra and Al Falah… which is in fact the same thing ! On the plus side, because in Abu Dhabi city itself the roads are well established, SatNav systems are very accurate here, so if you are here in Abu Dhabi to live for a time, it’s a good idea to buy yourself a GPS for your travels.
