Sir Bani Yas Island

Nestled in the Arabian Gulf off the western coast of Abu Dhabi, a mere two and a half hour drive from Abu Dhabi, lie the Desert Islands – a collection of eight islands that encompass a world of natural beauty, historic artifacts, exciting adventures and serene landscapes. Desert Islands, or Jozor Al Sahra’a as it is known in Arabic, consist of Sir Bani Yas Island, Dalma Island and six Discovery Islands. These islands have seen the birth and coming of age of Abu Dhabi and were cherished by the former president and late founding father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Sir Bani Yas Island, is the largest natural island in the United Arab Emirates, located just off the shore of the Western region of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas island the reserve was established in 1971 by the late ruler and founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Under Sheikh Zayed's patronage, several millions trees were planted and numerous animals species introduced to the island, including gazelle, oryx, llama, rhea, giraffe, and ostrich. Thanks to decades of intensive conservation work and ecological investment, it is now home to thousands of large free-roaming animals and several million trees and plants, a bird sanctuary and a wildlife reserve. There are a range of new developments planned for the Desert Islands, including some unique new lodges and activity centres. The work is ongoing with the aim of protecting and enhancing these islands for future generations.

Once the reserve was established it became one of Arabia’s most valued natural treasures. Sheikh Zayed wanted to share the results with the world; hence it was opened to weekend tourists in 2007. You can experience this park in a range of different ways. Sir Bani Yas showcases nature through activities such as adventure safaris, kayaking, mountain biking, archery, hiking and snorkeling, embark on a nature & wildlife drive and see some of Arabia’s unique indigenous animals, kayak through spectacular mangrove-filled waters or snorkel through the protected waters abundant with marine life. The Government of Abu Dhabi furthered Sheikh Zayed's legacy by establishing what is today known as the Desert Islands. Innovative new plans brought together Sir Bani Yas Island, and the neighboring Dalma Island, and six surrounding sandy outcrops into one exotic destination. This is now being developed and is scheduled for completion in 2015.

Sir Bani Yas Island

The name Sir Bani Yas Island originates from the Bani Yas tribe, who first inhabited Abu Dhabi. Sir Bani Yas Island was created millions of years ago when natural geological forces created the "salt dome" island present today. The first human settlers arrived several thousand years ago, long before people set foot on what was later to become the United Arab Emirates. The island has a number of significant historical sites, including remnants of Late Stone Age and early Islamic structures The island is also the location of the only pre-Islamic Christian site to be found in the UAE The 7th-century Christian church was opened to the public in 2010. It was discovered in 1992 and has been the focus of archaeological investigation ever sine. Thirty-six archaeological sites have been discovered throughout Sir Bani Yas, each providing a distinct insight into the island's history. One of the oldest sites is the remains of a Nestorian Christian monastery, which dates back to 600 AD. Each of these sites has now been carefully covered, to protect them until the time when they can be incorporated into the destination experience. The monastery complex, including a sanctuary, nave, chapel and tower, is now open to the public, but further excavation on the site is expected to continue for several years. At least eight houses have been unearthed, and the archaeological team has recently begun excavating a new structure adjacent to the main monastery building.
